Mike Richard's Contract Terminated (Not Bought Out)

Richards has a contract the Kings agreed to ... this will be a very easy decision for the judge.

If there is a morality clause and he broke it, it will be an easy decision. Voiding of the contract will stand. In a court of law, if you break certain provisions of a contract, that contract can be terminated.

If there is no morality clause, voiding of the contract will not stand.

I think its going to come down to if he ends up being convicted or not.

He's probably going to plea out (I'm American so correct me if I'm wrong)

The problem with the clause you're referring to is, from what I've heard, it's veryyyyyy vague. So it's going to be up to the judge to set precedent. Will be interesting.

Haven't seen his actual contract, but pretty safe bet that there is a morality clause...almost all professional athletes (or public figures) have them. The question would be how clear it is though.

Safe bet indeed.

Am I the only one who is mesmerised by how big that girls eye brows are in the first picture.

Those aren't eyebrows, they're the tarps that normally cover her Death Rays. They're just retracted in that picture, probs because she's about to Death Ray that mother effer...TO DEATH.

What's interesting is when they were talking about it on TSN they said multiple times that the NHL had approved the contract termination.

It initially seemed to me that the Kings were trying a hail mary to get out of that contract, but if it had to be approved by the league I'd have to think there was at least some merit to it.

If that's true I think the league has its priorities mixed up.

Voynov is still under contract with the Kings but Richards is not. Guy with drug problem loses his job but wife beater doesn't? "Morally" I believe the later is far worse.

It's beyond obvious that the Kings like Voynov's contract and him as a player, and don't like Richard's contract or as a player. They don't care about the moral implications of smuggling a few pills for personal use (Not like he's the first player to have drug problems either), they're seizing the opportunity to ditch a contract they don't want. If they cared they would have done the same with Voynov.

The hypocrisy is alarming, and IMO this sets a baddddd precedent.

Contractually speaking, I guess it is the Kings right to choose when to invoke the morality clause, but at the end of the day it's just a vague rule used to cheat a man out of the money that was promised to him, and has nothing to do with morals.

Comparing the morality of the two cases, I totally agree with what you're saying.

But in terms of terminating Richard's contract, I wonder if the Kings think have an out because his using drugs directly impacts his performance as a professional hockey player, so it might not be a morality clause they're using. Who knows though.

The Kings are definitely being opportunistic because of Richard's terrible contract. And I'm sure Lombardi is super pissed after a heart to heart meeting with Richards last season about turning things around instead of buying him out, only to find out he may have been abusing painkillers.

I just hadn't heard about the NHL approving the termination anywhere else. If that's the case I'd have to think they have some fairly winnable case if Bettman and the NHL lawyers approved it.

I feel really bad for the guy, not sure if he had a f***ed up childhood or if he's just a party animal but I liked him in Philly and I usually cheer for the kings in the playoffs because they always spank the Hawks and Ducks, like the Wings.
