Weiss bought out (confirmed)

Dumb move. We're not hurting for cap space next season and now Weiss is on the books for 6 seasons. If Weiss still didn't improve under Blashill, we could have done the same thing next year for a more reasonable penalty over 4 seasons rather than 6.

So long Weiss, sorry our former coach didn't use you correctly and good luck wherever you play!

Gus can ask or whatever he wants, he doesn't deserve more than Tatar. If Gus gets anything over $3M, it will be a waste. Next season Helm, MIller and Andersson can all leave, save the money to give Sheahan, Dekeyser and Mrazek...you also have 3 of the 4 D kids that will be RFA's. If Gus doesn't understand this, then he can be traded, I am not that impressed with him enough to lose other players over him wanting $4M+.

Similar to my thoughts as well, but the distaste for him must've been pretty wide in the organization for this to go down now. I'm sure there are things we don't know as well.

If Holland give Nyquist $5-$6.5M a year, then this team is doomed. Tell us Mrazekfanboy, if you think Gus is worth that, then what the heck is Mrazek going to get next year? Nothing because after giving NYquist $6M and then having to pay the other FA's similar money because if Nyquist earned it, so did they, there will be no money to even ice a complete team. I indeed, Gus is asking or this kind of money, trade his rights to someone who will overpay or him. Please lets not let Nyquist be Hudler 2.0, money hungry and puts himself in front of the team. For Christ's sake, Z's cap hit is just barely over $6M, you honestly think Nyquist earned that much?

Well, they did have to make room for Franzen and Cleary...this was the obvious thing to do!

That happened with a few players.

From this day forward no red wing shall wear #90... That's what you get for trying to get around using #19 or #9

Give me a break... Nyquist has scored more goals in the last two years than Tatar plus is a better all around player. I would be happy if we locked him up long term after he played for peanuts the last two years

Another UFA in the league either traded or bought out. More proof the UFA market is overrated and drafting is the way to go.

Nyquist will get a contract similar to Tatar

I really hope so. I am not saying he is bad or not an important part of our future, just needs to make it easier for us to keep our players together and be able to grow together. Sign a 2-3 year at $2.75M each and then if he scores 25-30 in each of those season's, give him a big deal.

An extra roster spot this year is probably worth more than the ~$1.7M in cap space in in 20-21. The next four years are about the same caphit-wise. So I think it's still a good move even if we don't use any of the cap savings this year (and I doubt we will). This puts us at about $15M in cap space, and I doubt our remaining RFAs will take more than half of that.

So, saving about $3.8M in cap space just to re-activate Franzen's $3.9M and sign Cleary to $1.5M with a $1M bonus. Save $3.8M to spend $6.4M on broken players. This off season is beginning to smell like rotten eggs.

There will be NO extra roster space. Not with Holland giving Cleary a contract and Franzen a spot. Say goodbye to some good young kids via waivers.

When Tatar signed he'd played one season and scored 19g, 39p. Nyquist has played 2 seasons, scoring 28g, 48p and 27g, 54p. He should and almost certainly will get more than Tatar. ~$4.5 range I would guess, around 5 years. I would much rather have that than a 2 yr cheap deal (when we don't need to be cheap) after which he'd be unrestricted.

If the Wings didn't buyout Weiss this year, the Wings really have Weiss for 5 years in the books. This year for the full $4.9M plus the additional four years at the buyout price.

So now the Wings have more cap space and a roster spot now.

That is due to having that extra long contract that is not allowed now in the NHL. Z's cap would be in the ~$7.5M a year range without those extra throw away years added.

No way. Tatar signed his current contact while only scoring 19G and putting up 39 points the year before. Guss has back to back 25G+ seasons and is older than when Tatar signed his deal. Guss will be 26 years old, this is his prime time money making years.

EDIT:

When Tatar signed he'd played one season and scored 19g, 39p. Nyquist has played 2 seasons, scoring 28g, 48p and 27g, 54p. Exactly

He won't. Don't get caught up by the current youth love. I'll put him on 3m right now. Ken Holland is a harder bargainer than me, he won't reach that if wants to be paid upfront.

Guessing, Holland would say something like : Your best bet is to show up this season. Cover for Dats. Then we talk. Else you got 2.75.

If Franzen is healthy there's no choice but re-activating him.

If Cleary is signed (which I doubt) it would maybe cost us Andersson or Ferraro. Not "some", and not particularly "good" either. Not saying I'd like it, and it would kind of defeat the purpose of dumping Weiss, but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as you and most of the board would make it out to be.
