Weiss bought out (confirmed)

This reminds me of one of the things I really didn't like about Babcock, though I didn't dislike him overall.

I don't think he put a lot of guys, most of those mentioned and David Legwand comes to mind as well, in a position to succeed. Every guy is not a two way player that can play all three forward positions on all four lines. Seems like he was hell bent on forcing square pegs into round holes. Not to sound like Dennis Green, but they are what we thought they were. This is where I think there was a disconnect between Holland and Babcock. Hated the Tootoo signing and he always annoyed me, but I actually felt sorry for him and for how he was treated. Feeling the same with Weiss, although I think injuries were a major part of his issue. I'm a little disappointed that we won't get to see if he could have succeeded with Babcock gone.

Terrible signing in the first place. Kenny just admitted the blunder and is moving on so to speak. I just hope he doesn't hand out another stupid UFA deal to a player who isn't worth it like Green.

My fear is that he's clearing cap space for Green. He will offer something like 36M$/6 years... And in two years he will finish like Weiss

To be fair he could barely play himself into the lineup in Ottawa either.

I didn't like the idea of Weiss taking up a roster spot. 5 mil for a guy to sit in press box or play 10 minutes a night? We have too many forwards. Pulks and Jurco need to play. Possibly Larkin if he proves he is ready. No sense waiting a year to buy him out. From a personnel standpoint this makes sense. Sure it sucks we have Weiss on our cap for 6 years. But next summer if he were bought out he'd still be on the cap for another 4 years.

Honestly by making Weiss a winger I think he may have been trying to put him in a position to succeed by giving him less responsibility. Weiss simply wasn't good. It's telling that with a new coach coming in, Datsyuk injured, and no pressing cap issue, Holland still went ahead and bought out Weiss.

I know Wings fans hate to hear it, but Weiss and Alfredsson were considered the top 2 free agents that summer.

I'm guessing Flip was up there too.

So pissed about this entire Weiss situation. Holland screwed up by signing him over Filppula (yeah yeah I know I still miss him), Babcock managed him like s*** two years in a row and Holland should have just bought him out when he had the chance to do it without penalty (admittedly I'm not sure if we could have bought him out without penalty).

I somewhat agree with this, but it still doesn't explain the plethora of games he was scratched.. lol.

It wasn't Holland who screwed up by signing Weiss over Filppula. Filppula wanted to go elsewhere. Weiss was signed because we were losing Flip, not because Holland chose Weiss over him.

That blog is actually pretty hilarious. He's so bitter he sounds like a jilted ex-girlfriend.

If Holland signed a player to a 5 year $25 mill deal "against his better judgment but at Babcock's insistence," then Holland should fired. Not that Gave could possibly actually know that was the case anyway.

I'm really surprised on the timing of this. I thought they were going to give him one more season to see if he could get back on track under a different coach, one that may have given him a better chance to succeed than Babcock ever did. I don't love that we'll have Weiss on the books for the next 6 seasons, but the cap hit isn't anything unmanageable, so I'm okay with the decision. We're freeing up a fair amount money, and we now have about $14.4M to spend on our RFA's (Nyquist, Jurco, Pulkkinen, Ferraro, and Callahan), with (I'm thinking) r roughly $5-7M in cap space to go after a UFA. I think if we do go after anyone, it's pretty obvious it has to be a defenseman. I want Franson, and I'd pay him anywhere between $4-5M on a 3-5 year contract. If we don't land him, I'm quite content to to stand pat and go with the kids. The only other defender than remotely interested me is Ehrhoff and he's another left handed defenseman, so I'd prefer to see Marchenko or Jensen over him. Franson or nothing for me...

We couldn't have. Players had to be signed before the new cba was signed to be eligible for the compliance buyouts.

And, krsmith, I thought they'd give him another season under a new coach to play well here too.. I'm guessing the new coach didn't want him as much as one of his kids from GR. Mayyybe we're planning on signing franson/green/whoever, but I think it's more blashill didn't have Weiss in his plans. I'm sure Kenny was trying to include him in a trade before buying him out but obviously no potential trade scenario panned out.. best of luck to Weiss, I wish he would've had a better time in Detroit.

It's not unlike Gave to exaggerate. He does it regularly. Khan (and St. James) have both made comments like this lately:

"Babcock pushed hard for the Weiss signing in 2013 but surely isn't interested in him now, after making him a healthy scratch the final five games of the playoff series against Tampa Bay."

"The Wings signed Weiss to a five-year, $24.5 million contract in the summer of 2013, with Weiss' biggest champion being former head coach Mike Babcock."

Which Gave is clearly taking way overboard. It's not unlike the decision to bring Cleary back. Ultimately it's Holland's decision to make, but like any intelligent GM he let his coach weight in on the decision and the coach supported it (in some instances strongly). Which is not the same as "against his better judgement, Holland blah blah blah".

Dumb move. We're not hurting for cap space next season and now Weiss is on the books for 6 seasons. If Weiss still didn't improve under Blashill, we could have done the same thing next year for a more reasonable penalty over 4 seasons rather than 6.

this is how I feel as well. We had nothing to lose by giving him one last shot. Waive him if he sucks at the start of the season. If he resurrects his career somewhere else, we'll probably feel pretty stupid. Oh well, hopefully this is the precursor to a bigger move. Edited by LidstromIsASuperhero

Honestly, I feel like this was done just so they had more cap room to sign guys like Nyquist, Pulkkinen and Jurco. I'm not saying that we won't sign any free agents, but the only way we get players these days are if they want to come here and play for less, nobody else wants them or via trade. The Wings don't overpay for free agents and that's what the start free agency period is all about.

I agree this was more about creating space to resign free agents than making a big UFA signing as there is still some cap hit over the next few years.

I also think either Larkin or AA is going to be a big surprise in training camp.
