I'm fine with Green on board, much needed. Can't say much about how good of a fit he is until I see him play in the wings system. He is injury prone though, so need to keep an eye on that.

Would have prefered - as mentioned - Franson he is better defensively, a more physical player and can chip in a point here and there.

The panel on TSN just discussed Mike Green and they basically said he's a powerplay magician but a trainwreck defensively.

Only one person said he was a trainwreck, and it was Ferraro. The rest of the panel was saying how much of a good fit it is for Detroit because they felt he fits our system very well.

And my wish came true. Except the cheap part. Not thrilled at the price. But we have money to spend I guess. Does this mean no cleary?

The only way the money changes is if Green gets more term. It's very fair where it is right now imo. Plus you have a player that is very excited to come to play for the Wings.

The panel pretty much has to say things like that. Consensus among Washington fans is he's a dumpster fire, too. Basically, imagine someone a little worse defensively than Smith, but paid that much more. Green could either work for us or completely blow up in our face. I mean, his sole ability is to get points, and he was pushed down the roster to the third pairing and off of the first power play unit with Washington because he stopped producing points.

He might do well here, but only relative to the massive weaknesses of our defensive core. Which kind of shows us how far we are from a Cup.

Mike Green and Brad Richards. I love it!!!!!

Green's reputation as a total liability on the defensive side of the puck is ridiculous. This is a very good defenseman whose strengths are perfectly suited for the kind of hockey the Wings play (now more than ever, with Blashill coming in). I'd love to see what he can do with DeKeyser; I think that could be a great pairing.

We didn't need Richards like we needed Green, but depth is the name of the game in today's NHL and Richards certainly makes us deeper. He's always struck me as a "very Red Wings" player. I expect him to be big for us while Datsyuk's out.

Good work, Kenny!

It's amazing what a change of scenery can do. Heard similar things about Myers about 5 months ago.

I haven't heard good things about Green from any Caps fans, or anyone other than Wings fans, for years. Remember how pumped Toronto was when they signed Lebda? I think maybe we're on the wrong side of that now.

Except Green is a veteran and Myers is still technically an impressionable young player.

Why does that change anything again?

When I'm looking at cup contenders, I put them in a different atmosphere the Wings are years away from something like that.

I fully agree with you, Green could work out or completely blow up in a spectacular fashion. I mean Trotz is demanding his players to be defensively responsible and I hope Blashill will do the same, if Green buys in this could a good signing but if not thanks it's only for 3 years.

Tyler Myers basically is a young Chara, so not a good comparison.

Reading the Caps forums, they are generally thrilled to be rid of the guy. His offense was non-existant in the playoffs...14 games, 2 points.

He's way past his prime, injuries have significantly derailed his natural abilities and his defense is subpar (and that's being nice).

Only time will tell if this works out, but the more I look at it the more I dislike it....especially because we already have a glut of defensemen.

My biggest surprise with this deal is how the near unanimous response of the signing on these boards is VERY positive. This is FAR from a slam dunk deal, and very well could be a disaster from day 1 as with Weiss.

No one is comparing Myers to Chara, it's comparing Myers struggles to his entire game change when going to Winnipeg. The same thing can happen with Green. Detroit has far better two way players then Washington to help out with any defensive issues he has.

Meyers is a young Chara because he's 20 ft tall pretty much nothing else

We kept all our assets and gained at the very least, a 40 point dman who will likely score a lot more. Franson is a bad skater and will have trouble hitting 40 points and is also bad defensively. You have to be able to skate in today's NHL to play defense

Do you trust the caps coach? Green was demoted to the third pairing.

Caps knew they weren't resigning Green when they added Niskanen and Orpik. There was no room for him. Management isn't going to treat him like he's a core player on their team when he's on his way out. Going to other teams HF boards is not a good way to scout out your new player

Agreed...that's why I liked our decision to draft young Mr Sarvi...

If thats what you have to tell yourself to help you sleep at night. Green's average time on ice has dropped significantly the past two consecutive seasons and in the most recent playoffs it dropped even more. But you are saying this was purely a loyalty thing since they weren't resigning him? Playing him less made the Caps worse as a team but it was worth it because they weren't resigning him? Ya, ok.
