Red Wings sign D Mike Green (3-years, $18-million)

I initially didn't want any part of Green, mainly because I was expecting him to get somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 or 7 years at $6M per. I'm happy we were able to get him on a 3 year contract at the same cap hit. I'm not sold on his defensive game, but there's no question he will help out our already potent power-play. I think 50 points is very attainable, and he very well may be our top point producing defender next season. I also agree that pairing him with DeKeyser would likely be a very good 2nd pairing. I'm excited to see how things shake out in trading camp...

Kronwall - Ericsson

DeKeyser - Green

Smith - Quincey

Kindl

Really like the signing - just what the team needs. Solid top-four there.

Kronwall-Ericsson
DeKeyser-Green

Saw that Kenny was talking about moving someone. First inclination is to move Kindl, but if there aren't any takers, maybe they can ship off Quincey. He had a solid season, and there might be more teams willing to take a shot with him. Smith-Quincey just doesn't work as a pairing, and I'd like to see one of the RH shots down in GR used on this team. Smith-Marchenko looked solid in their short time together - think they'd be a decent bottom pair. I'd also like to see Jensen get a look there, too.

Kindl is what he is, but I'd rather leave 2.4 sitting on the bench than a prospect or 2.75 of Smith. Maybe they can flip KFQ for a pick or two.

Blash said he likes what smith and kindl can potentially bring and wants to see what they can do, so I have a feeling the kids will be in grand rapids.

And if the coaching staff wants to play those two, then quinceys gonna be sitting, which I don't see...

So you'd think someone has to be moved.

I have mixed feelings about Kindl. He'll make a bonehead turnover then come back and score 2 goals or set up a nifty play. As for Smith I think he's improved greatly and actually thought he was our best defenseman during that piss poor Boston series.

Defensemen get a little more room for error with me. Lidstrom was an anomaly and to say basing our blueliners on him is being unfair would be an understatement.

Love Green or hate him we have the last defenseman to break 30 goals wearing the Winged Wheel now.

Wasn't a fan of Kindl but he looked pretty sharp the last games he played. I saw an improvement overall, which is always nice.

Don't wanna judge him to be a lazy bum just yet. Let's see what preseason brings.

One of my problems with Kindl is that for him to look decent he has to play really sheltered minutes. Last time I looked it up he got the most offensive zone starts of any defenseman in the league.

He may come out of the game smelling like a rose but it stretches our thin blueline even thinner, and they end up making gaffes.

If they could find a taker for kindl then I don't know why they refuse to trade him

Marchenko ouellet jensen surpassed him or will , heck I'd even have lashoff before kindl and he's been gone for along time

If he can get a 7th for kindl just do it and give hakan Andersson the pick and hope he gets a gem and call it a day

Check out greens interview on NHL.com -

Looks like he will be focused on putting pucks in the net and creating offensive plays for the Red Wings. I'm almost certain this can be done with a Dekeyser pairing who can do more of the defensive duties while Green is free do the scoring stuff.

Our PP is going to wreck.

I really hope our new coaches study what made our powerplay so great last season and replicate what our old coaches did. I'm pretty excited for Green.

They split up Datsyuk and ZEtterberg on powerplay. So we ended up having two lethal units rather than one. First time they split them up for that extended period of time too. I think like more than half the games.

We also switched to the 1-3-1 formation last year and had 1 D man instead of 2. I hope they keep these switches.

We'll also see if they put Green and Kronwall on different units. I think that'd be pretty great, especially with the 1 defense system.

And then when we really need it we could do Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Nyquist, Kronwall, Green. I assume 100% powerplay success rate with that unit.

nah, only 90%, replace Nyquist with Tatar, now we're talking 100%!

Nyquist is a better powerplay performer than Tatar is. He was 3rd in the league for PP goals........

Wasn't there a poll a few years ago where Babcock was voted by players around the league as one of the coaches they'd least want to play for?

Might explain why we got two free agents to agree to come here as soon as he's gone.

As much as people keep wanting to push that narrative, I'm pretty sure that was Tortorella who took top honors. Babcock was at or near the top of coaches they'd most want to play for. I couldn't find the original poll, just articles that reference it.

In terms of free agents coming here, it could be that Kenny actually paid market value for both of them.

^ Not true.John Tortorella was ranked LEAST likely to play for and Mike Babcock was ranked SMARTEST NHL coach by a poll done by ESPN with 50 NHL players.

Players like Caps coach Bruce Boudreau and Pens Dan Bylsma (each received 16 percent). But they love the Wings' Mike Babcock (22 percent). When asked about the last coach they'd want to play for, Rangers coach John Tortorella took the dubious title (18 percent). "He's always yelling and calling out guys in the media," says one Western Conference wing.

The whole "Babcock must not be drawing attention" rumor started when Holland failed to land Suter and Parise. Always easy to point fingers at the coach when s*** goes down the drain. That's why the Maple Leafs have been a great soap opera to watch for me.

Edit - That same poll showed that players voted the Red Wings as the Best NHL franchise. 60% of the votes.

I never understood that narrative, Suter&parise went to minny because they wanted to play together, every time someone brings up suter and/or parise as evidence that we can't attract free agents I get a bit annoyed.

Also.

I like that last part.
