About what the hockey writers were talking about earlier this summer. he was going to eat up much of their cap space.

This doesn't help us and those that think Nyquist is going to get a "bridge" deal.....

And he should eat up their cap space. This dude is elite. Barring injuries and perhaps size considerations the blues were wise to tie him up for 8 years.

Congrats to them, he'll be in the top 10 scoring list for a long time.

Afterthought edit:

Agree with frankgrimes, 8 million is cheapish for him, nice one for the blues.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I'd prefer to see consistent performance before handing out a huge contract like this. Very good chance the contract ends up being a bargain for the Blues, but I still scratch my head a bit.

I agree. I certainly don't think this deal is a "steal". At least not yet.

7.5 million dollar cap-hit. Now the highest paid Blue.

According to Andy Strickland, the Tarasenko deal breaks down as follows, starting in 2015-16 through 2022-23: $8 million in the first two years, $7 million in the next two, $9.5 million, then $5.5 million, then $9.5 million and then $5 million.

Puck Daddy Notes: Interesting dips around the 2021-22 season, after which the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires. He makes $5.5 million the year before the next lockout and then $9.5 million during the lockout!

Nothing against Tarasenko, but what about this contract is a steal? The guy has 135 points in 179 games. I am asking more in regards to what people thought a guy with one great season would get? Personally I do not care what a guy makes, just logically I am confused as to how some people think he is somehow being underpaid.

Two changes: If a player re-signs with his current team he can sign 8 years. If the player elects to go through FA the max he can sign is 7 years.

Thanks for the update.

On a separate note:

Not to start a referendum on the validity of the contract limitations. However the more I think about it the less I like the idea of the league controlling contract length. Now I get the reasoning behind it, but the league already has a rule about circumventing the cap along with a salary cap. Is it really the commissioners job to protect teams from stupid longterm deals?

I don't think its so much the league protecting the teams, more so giving the lower market teams a fair/better shot at keeping its own players with the incentive of that extra year.

I'm not just talking about the extra year, but about the entire cap on contracts. If a team wants to do something stupid like give a 30 year old an 11 year deal, and as long as every year counts for the same cap hit, then it shouldn't be disallowed. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I can see where you're coming from... but those contracts are what keep bringing about the lockouts, which it seems like were right back on track for the next one once this CBA expires.

So much so that people are laying out contracts preparing for the next one, like tarasenkos dropping to 5m for the year the cbas up.

Its all crazy.

You're right it's a crazy pointless system. Since after 2 lockouts, the cap is now over 70 mil. In several years we are ones again going to look for something to watch in the winter, while the owners jerk each other off.

When does this CBA exprire. I need to book a trip that year. The damn last lockout was so boring I was forced to watch basketball. Eek.

73 points at 22-23, and he's not even in his prime.

I understand that he had a great season. But I'm of the belief that backing up a Brinks truck right into the fender of another Brinks truck at this junction is a bit premature. Plenty of guys have been down this road only to eventually lose their way. Again, not saying Tarasenko will fall into that category, only time will tell. I'm just surprised at how many people believe this deal is a home run.

I think Tarasenko has a much higher ceiling than Nyquist. Tarasenko is basically Datsyuk 2.0.
