I thought Mantha was going to be the exception to the rules with how people were talking about him in the organization last summer. Now with Larkin, the organization has actually come out on record saying they would like to give him a shot to make the team. Something I haven't ever really heard with the Holland administration. I truly believe if he lights it up with GR then he will get a stint in the NHL this season. But I don't see him being anything near a regular unless he some how makes a quick transition to the NHL. Alot to ask of a 19 year old.

Yup, Mantha sucks! Pulkkinen sucks! and Larkin too will suck if he struggles at any point next season. Or if he absolutely dominates the American League and then struggles in his first stint with the Wings... Only on LGW... I think we should package all these guys together, along with Svechnikov, who will no doubt suck too, and prized defenseman Saarijarvi for a player that does not / will not suck...

By the way Datsyukian-Deke, management actually comes out on record every single year and says that so and so (top prospect) will be given every opportunity to make the big club. We've heard it with well seasoned guys like Nyquist and Tatar and we've also heard it with guys fresh out of junior like Mantha. Fact is they're not going to say the kid has no chance to make it (when in reality, it pretty much is...), what benefit is that? What motivation does he have going into camp? Every kid wants to believe they have a shot, it would make no sense to tell them otherwise...

I voted 5 and really dont want him to see anymore than that. If he does it will be because of injuries. Lets be honest he would still be a boy among men. Its not like he has a massive frame to compete with players that are larger, faster, and stronger than anything hes played against. He also hasnt played the amount of games in a season that pro's do. The grind is a big thing for youngsters to adapt to. The Wings moves this offseason to me say they think there might be a slim chance he makes the roster but they are banking on him being in the AHL which is fine by me.

Have there been any Red Wings player that struggled in AHL and turned it around to dominate at NHL level? (Serious question btw)

By "struggle in the AHL", do you mean, put up over 0.5 points per game in their first season pro (after coming off a pretty serious injury)? And by "dominate at NHL level" do you mean elite, top 10-20 in the league? Or do you mean very good NHL player? If it's the former, I would say doubtful, if it's the latter, I would say, Darren Helm (31 points in 67 games), Riley Sheahan (38 points in 79 games), Tomas Tatar (32 points in 58 games) and Tomas Jurco (28 points in 74 games), are all reasonable examples, and that's just current Red Wings forwards... No, none are super-stars, but none "suck" either... and that is my point. Mantha will be fine, Pulkkinen will be fine, and neither will suck at the NHL level...

I'm surprised at how little consideration AA seems to get on these boards. He seems much closer to NHL-level than any forward in GR save for Pulkkinen, yet Mantha is still gets a lot more attention than him.

Larkin only played a handful of games in GR and from memory, he was pretty friggin good - but it was only a handful of games. Which means, I'm excited for his future, but reserve my judgement for his present level until I witness more. But given his age, it's an uphill battle to get a shot over guys like AA, Pulkkinen and even Mantha, Bertuzzi and Callahan.

I think we're taking these "so and so sucks" comments a little too seriously.. they'll all develop just fine, it's the wings organization after all.

And I think aa gets less hype than mantha/larkin because Mantha and Larkin have very high expectations for prospects. I'm as excited for aa as I am for anyone else.

Plus, I think AA flew a little under the radar, especially at the beginning of last year, then he broke his jaw. His reputations has always been as a solid defensive forward, but he showed last year that he can also put up points. It was a big year for him, and I think that raised his status within the organisation. Plus, Mantha and Larkin were first round picks. For a team that rarely has 1st round picks, that makes their expectations even greater.

I've never seen aa described as a defensive forward.

He played on the penalty kill in juniors because he's fast, but most of the reviews I've read have said he has a ways to go on the defensive side of things, which goes along with what you see watching him...

He's getting better, and he's also getting a bit better at using his linemates, he back checks hard, but I wouldn't say he's defensive...

He'll get there though, I've been really high on him for awhile now.

Bill Roose - "Red Wings rookie Dylan Larkin, who has been assigned number 28 by the NHL club, will now wear 71 when he's with the team this season"... WTF? I was under the impression he was going to wear 25 with the Red Wings? Where did 28 come from? And why the f*** would he wear number 71? And also, "when" he's with the team "this" season???...

I definitely think it's more of an "if" then a "when". Roose could be referring to the preseason, or maybe he's optimistic about Larkin's chances. I doubt he's tipping his hand with, though (don't think he'd know about that kind of decision just yet).

However, I do find it interesting that Larkin's practicing with Detroit. As far as I know, there aren't any other GR-bound players with them right now. I know Marchenko was at a previous skate about a week ago, but I'm not sure about this one? Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: In terms of the number, he usually wears 19. He's worn 21 with USA. Obviously, neither is available in Detroit. Or maybe he just wants some of 2013-14's version of Dan Cleary to rub off on him (I swear, I'm not being cheeky, but I couldn't help it. The opportunity presented itself).

Green is wearing 25

I thought 71 was reserved for Russians. Dylark is hoping some of that Cleary contract magic rubs off on him.
