Gustav Nyquist signed 4-Year Deal $4.75 mill AAV

A $4.25 cap hit for a guy who plays 20 minutes a night is a good contract. Teams would be interested.

The ca[ hit for E isn't bad, but O don't think many teams would have much interest in taking in a 31yo for 5 years unless that player was really good or really cheap.

I don't necessarily think he's unmovable, but we'd likely have to retain some portion of it.

Getting rid of Ericcson would be a dream but his contract is a nightmare. I agree with the above post that we'd have to take salary back to move him. Not that he's a horrible player, but we've got plenty of depth on D and his $4.25 cap hit could be used elsewhere.

How is 4.25 for the next five years a "horrible, Unmovable contract" because he's 31.

We all know Ericsson didn't play like a top pair defenseman last year, but the year before that he was playing very well, so much So that people were talking about how important Ericsson is to the team when he went down with an injury a couple years back...

He is a good top four dman, and yes serviceable on the top pair, not very good, But serviceable. And he clears the front of the net better than any of our other d, he plays 20+ minutes a night, and for those of you who complain there's not enough fighting, he is our best fighter and the one who's fastest to stick up for teammates.

He makes some bad plays, he could make one bad play in ten games and be completely solid the rest of the time and there would still be people complaining about that one bad play, extrapolating it into worse and worse things...

I get that there has to be a scapegoat so everyone can vent their frustration, and since Quincey was one of our better d last year, and kindl barely played, so it all reverts to Ericsson.

Who didn't even get to fully prepare for the season because his hand/finger injury to the point he could barely grip a hockey stick. Its maddening how fickle some of us fans can be.

what am I worried about, we'll have plenty of cap room when Howard gets traded and Coreau comes up to backup Mrazek...it will be funny when there's that one night where Petr just can't get in the grove and Coreau comes in relief and Kenny says, referring to Blashill "...he went to Jared!"

re: Ericsson, hasn't it been said in the Patrick Sharp trade thread that Dallas now has a hole on D? Maybe Nill will take one of his boys from us, eh? Get it done, Kenny!

I think Q is most likely to be moved. We won't get much considering how valuable he has been to our team but we can shed his salary and replace him with Marchenko who would be just a marginal downgrade. Q would be playing on the bottom pair anyways so his value to us won't be the same as it was.

Getting rid of Ericsson makes our Defense that much smaller. To be honest, that's not the right direction to head playing in the Eastern conference. We already have a tough time against teams like Ottawa and Montreal.

Q would probably get moved first.

You mean next year? Because that's not happening this year.

I don't see anyone getting moved. Holland will take the team into training camp over the roster limit, and a couple injuries will happen and then all of a sudden nobody needs to be moved. Then by the time these injured players recover, a few more go down to LTIR. It seems to happen every year.

Wow Goose left some serious money on the table here. He would have gotten much more on the open market

But he wasnt in the open market.

Obviously if he was a ufa He would've gotten more, but he was an rfa an He signed A bridge deal that buys two ufa Years, with the two remaining rfa years. He didn't really leave money on the table, hell be making 5million/yr In his ufa years. That's about Market value for what he's done so far. His playoff performances also changes the Money, had he been scoring at the same Rate in there playoffs as he had during the regular season, he would've gotten more...

He still has quite a bit to prove before he hits ufa.

Nice post. I was about to post pretty much the same thing. People forget that being an RFA and UFA are not the same thing.

I'm guessing it was just an oversight on frank's part.

Usually I would agree, but if you read the other Nyquist thread, there was a pretty clear narrative that Nyquist would be paid at least 6mil a year, and there was definitely an understanding that he was an RFA.

Except he wasn't on the open market. That's why there is RFA status to protect teams from losing their young players to silly contracts.

This is literally the stupidest argument I've heard. Yes he could get more on the open market, if he was eligible for that. And he filed for arbitration to stop anyone from offer sheeting him. He's two years away from eligibility, so he shouldn't get played like a ufa. It's like someone in junior management who is really good at their job wanting to get paid the CEO's salary...

Not only that, but $19M isn't an amount to turn your nose up. If he gets seriously injured or otherwise unable to perform in two years, he'll be glad he signed this contract instead of holding out for $6-8M.

Think about it... Let's say the alternative was playing under the RFA amount for two years and then signing a big contract:

2015-2016 $3,000,000 Two-year contract at lower rate to get to UFA.
2016-2017 $3,000,000 Two-year contract at lower rate to get to UFA.
2017-2018 $7,750,000 (big contract, presuming #'s keep rising and his performance increases) UFA

2018-2019 $7,750,000 UFA

So that's a total of 4-years, $21,500,000. Even if he signed a two-year, $6M contract - giving him the quickest out to UFA status - he's risking about $12M (difference between what he'd have at the end of the 16-17 season and what he's going to have now at the end of the 18-19 season) on the chance that he doesn't have a career-ending injury or otherwise harm his chances at a big contract.

So, yes, he maximizes his salary ceiling by signing a two-year deal, but he also maximizes his salary floor by signing a four-year deal. Risk/Reward.

Yes, it's a nice deal but I honestly expected him to get more. Sure it's nothing to turn your nose at and it sets him up nicely for the future by only giving up 2 ufa years.

Your post makes a lot of sense I didn't look at it that way but you are right this contract is basically risk prove for both sides

This is a great deal - don't kid yourselves. The guy produces and you have to pay him accordingly.I was expecting/hoping for 2 years @ 4.5, but that was me being greedy. I usually steer clear of comparisons. Saad just got 6 million for similar production on a stacked Chicago team. Yes, he's a few years younger than Gus, but Nyquist could have gotten more. I'm going to name my dog after this man.
