Lovable Dan Cleary update thread

Our very own Helene St. James had 'news' on Cleary. Nothing too useful quite yet but figured this might be a good place to discuss his imminent contract (as a player or front office?)

The Wings might end up re-signing Cleary for one last year, but even if that happens, general manager Ken Holland has told Cleary that he won't make the NHL squad. If Cleary gets the same $1.5-million contract he had last season, the Wings would get $925,000 in salary cap relief by sending Cleary to the minors.

The wings, and the wings designated reporters need to stop running their mouths about this handshake deal thing...

If it was anyone other than Dan cleary, the NHL would be on them for collusion/cap circumvention.

If the 3yr deal with philly was real, you'd think phillys f.o. would be pissed about this enough to try to make it a problem. Then again, the whole pronger situation may have kept them from throwing a fit. This whole handshake agreement thing kind of lends credibility to the offer being a real though, despite what philly has said publicly.

Helene St. James is pretty idiotic when it comes to factual evidence. I'm not surprised she hasn't caught on. I don't buy the whole 'deal' that was put forth by philly

She does have her moments though.

I've changed my view on the whole Cleary thing. The Wings are showing loyalty to a good guy, who went through the grinder for the team over the years. We should all be so lucky to have bosses/friends who show us that kind of loyalty. He'll get some money, play in GR- while helping the young guys. Good for him, and good for the Wings.

Meh I'm all for loyalty and I respect that the Red Wings show it, but our situation is a bit tight; especially if Franzen stays on roster. Cleary is no longer an asset to our season/playoff run. I say keep him in front office or let him walk and see if he gets a signing elsewhere.

I have no issue with Cleary, but as a fan I'd like to see us do what we can do bring home the cup. Not entirely sure if Cleary fits into that equation.

Except they've paid him money during this time. It's not like he was interning for the Wings and is now ready to finally make money. Dude is a millionaire. Not sure why Holland has taken loyalty to this level.

Cleary isn't gonna be on the roster, do we really care how much money he's making? He also didn't stop any young guys from playing last year. I'm over the Holland/Cleary thing, plus after 2 years the jokes have gotten old and frankly kinda lazy. As far as loyalty goes, the Wings have always been loyal to their guys. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason Holland wants Cleary in GR is to learn the coaching aspect of the game, and join the GR staff next year.

A two-way deal simply means a player receives a different salary at the AHL level than the NHL level. It has nothing to do with waivers. A one-way deal means the player is paid the NHL salary even if they are sent down.

I know that much.. sorry, I could've been more clear. How does a two-way deal effect his cap hit? Does it not count against the wings cap if he clears waivers and goes to the minors on a two-way deal or is counting against the cap in the minors also age based?

Agreed. There is a reason why the Wings rarely have players jump ship, they treat their players well.

The wings get approx $925,000 salary cap relief if a player is sent down, anything below that amount no longer affects them, anything above does. If it's a two-way deal odds are his NHL salary is below that $925,000 threshold and would be offset by the cap relief. That's probably why many folks are OK with Andersson being waived (plus he'd likely clear).

So if clearly was paid only say $925k mill this year rather than 1.5 mill he made last year , it wouldn't affect our cap?

If he was sent down, my understanding is the full amount would be offset by the cap relief if that was to happen. If he gets$1.5 million, then $575,000 would still be on the wings cap hit.

The loyalty thing doesn't make sense to me. Why not just pay him to work in the front office? Then he has stability, no risk of injury, etc. Make him work for his pay at least.

I'm sure he does some coaching behind the scenes, I doubt he just collects a paycheck. Like I said I expect him to be a coach at some point in the Wings system.

Meh, I really think it doesn't matter. I would only mind if he was taking up a roster spot. If he's not in the NHL, a small caphit doesn't really matter. Without Chelios, Blashill in Grand Rapids it would be good to ensure there's some strong guidance down there (I know Fischer and others are still there). It would be better if he was an assistant coach or advisor, but hey it is one minor league roster spot and it's important to have veterans there in the AHL.

I believe Cleary still wants to keep playing hockey.

I think the important thing is to think what will happen when he is moved to grand rapids, I know frk was regularly pushed to the echl last year, and we've re-signed all the other vets down there, with dylark, and lil bert there for sure now, who else needs a spot there...

turgeon?

Ehn?

Callahan, Ferraro?

Would him coming in supplant anyone we need developing there?

And cleary will probably be a pretty damn good player there, he's broken down, but he's still much more talented than most of the vets there, where will he play, and who'll get pushed down.

I think this has run its course.

If the handshake thing is true, than paying him the wage of a scout ala draper or maltby would be a lot less than he would've made in philly.

Unless you wanna upset the pay grade and give him 10x what the other guys made their first years.
