Moving Jimmy Howard

Recommended Posts

I am sure glad someone else made this thread and not me!

Jimmy WILL be moved before 16-17, unless Mrazek totally takes a crap fest this season (which I highly doubt,) because solid tandem or not, Holland cannot and will not have over $8M (at least) tied up in his goalies. And that is IF Mrazek re-signs for only $3M. If he wins 25+ games and takes them into the 2nd round at least, I see him getting closer to $4M. NO WAY will Holland have that much money tied up in goalies.

For all you Holland slappies out there (and even me from a financial standpoint) you better hope that Howard outplays and keeps his starting job all season and limits Petr's starts to 20 or less. That way, Petr may re-sign for something around $2M, which could keep Jimmy around for another season. But then again, if Petr goes 17-3 or so in those 20 starts and Jimmy DOES re-gain his #1 form, that could mean more in return for him next summer.

Either way, as Mrazek continues his progression the way he has been, Jimmy's days are dwindling, that is the truth. Lets just hope we can get great value for him when it comes times to trade him....and he cooperates by listing 10 or so teams he will or won't go to.

In Edmonton, I would love to see him Packaged with Smith and Sproul and a pick (or maybe a young forward) to acquire one of their scorers (Taylor Hall maybe.)

I suspect Jimmy comes back better than ever and we will be moving Mrazek.

You're nutz lol.

Mrazek is unproven and still has to round out his game, there a lot of goalies who come in but after while they come back down to earth because other teams are figuring them out and adjusting their attack style accordingly.

Howard is a capable proven number 1 sure he is not elite but only a few guys are. Also with Blashill coming in everyone will have to earn the trust of the new coach so I expect Howard to have one hell of a season and around 10 - 15 games for Mrazek if Howard stays healthy.

You've haven't watched him in juniors or the AHL. He's more than capable of being a #1 goalie.

The goalie market might be flooded next summer. Allen is likely going to replace Elliot in St.Louis. Gibson will likely be succeeding Andersson in Anaheim. Those, goalies are already splitting starts. Trading Jimmy might be harder than we think.

Taylor Hall for Jimmy! Hahaha....

if you don't have anything to add to the conversation or are here just to troll, then move along.

if you remember, last season when the rumors about Hall being traded went around, an Oiler reporter named a few teams and players that would get a trade done. Detroit was named and the return was Sheahan, Sproul and 1st round pick for Hall & Petry. So laugh all you want, but if that would have been enough then Jimmy, Smith, Sproul and a pick is more than enough for Hall.

But by all means, troll along. BTW, Hossa has 3 Cups since we signed the other guy instead, he is still top line material and would be here scoring 40 goals playing top 3 sniper role. Fact.

If Mrazek has a 17-3 stretch, we have a lot more going us for than worrying about Jimmy Howard's contract. I think that might be jumping the gun a little on Mrazek's ability.

how soon folks forget 9-1 in a ten game stretch, even playing inconsistent. Why is 17-3 out of the question?

Why would it be unreasonable to think Holland can't spend $8mill on goalies. Lunquist alone makes that and he's never won a cup, so to have that kind of tandem at that price is feasible

agree, but Lundquist plays most nights, with $8M in Detroit you are going to have $$$$$ sitting on the bench every game. You going to pay Petr $3+ to start 15 games? Pay Jimmy $5M+ to start 15 if Mrazek wins the job?

I legitimately don't ever remember hearing anything like this. Do you have a link or anything?

Closest I can find to what you were saying is this...http://thehockeywriters.com/trade-talk-shopping-taylor-hall/

Which was Hall and Petry for Sheahan, Mantha, Pulkkinen, and Sproul. Not Sheahan, Sproul, and a 1st.

It was also an entirely speculative piece written by a writer for the Kelowna Daily Courier. A periodical with about as much circulation as the Flint Journal. Not an "Oilers reporter".

Edit: However, I'm not even really trying to blow your s*** up here. If the Oilers would trade Taylor Hall for Jimmy, Smith, Sproul, and a pick I'd make that trade too.

Mrazek had better numbers than Howard in the regular season even with his struggles, and he was amazing in the playoffs, damn near beat Tampa on his own yes he had one bad game I think game 2 or 3 when he got pulled! And even Babs said it wasn't his fault just our crappy defense and he continued to start every game after that, expect a 50-52 30-32 split depending on how each of them plays.

If Howard isn't playing in the playoffs next year then I guess we know who will be traded in the next offseason.

That would be a good trade for the Oilers if it's a 1st idk why they wouldn't take it but I'd rather have RNH than Hall. I'm talking about the one Kip mentioned, I really like Sheahan but I'd like this trade Sheahan Sproul Smith and Howard and a 1st/2nd rounder for RNH Talbot and a 3rd or 4th round pick

Mrazek is way to inconsistent for 17-3

Agreed. He's a good goalie, and he's obviously going to get much better. But anybody thinking that we've got an elite goalie on our hands already is setting themselves up for a lot of disappointment. Mrazek will probably be good, but not great, this season and then begin tearing it up next season (if he's ever going to tear it up at all). I fully expect Jimmy to play the majority of the games this season (barring injury) with Mrazek starting about 35. I absolutely don't believe he'll be named the number 1 goalie until the organization has seen what he can do with a regular NHL workload.

He had a good and bad stretches last year just like Howard except he bounced back, Howard just continued to play like crap after he returned but yeah he is way took inconsistent and he played great for 6/7 games in the playoffs but he's way too inconsistent, Had better numbers than Howard but yeah he's way too inconsistent just shut the hell up he's not a train wreck yes he needs to find some consistency and be a little less aggressive but he still played better than our starting goalie who makes 5+ mil a year the kid is fine he's going to work with the trainers and all that inconsistency crap will be history by this time next year when Howard is Hopefully Traded so we can get some cap relief and keep all of our players then once Datsyuk is off the books the year after that we'll be way under cap

That wasn't directed at anybody but stop ragging the kid jeez he was just as good as Howard and he always bounced back lots of goalies go through bad stretches it's a regular thing.

I don't know if it's smart to keep them both this season. IF and I say IF, Mrazek beats Howie as a starting goalie, Howie's value will decrease significantly...

Not necassarily. If they both play solidly Jimmy would still have value. I think our best case scenario is that they split time and Mrazek proves he could handle the full load. Then we could get a good return for Howard. If Mrazek runs away with it and Jimmy is post-Injury Jimmy, we'd have an expensive but solid backup for 3 more years, or we do a Luongo-like salary dump deal. I know Luo's deal was much bigger and he had a history of being a truly elite goalie so it's a bit different, but in the same vein of the value being getting rid of an unneeded contract+role player in return. That wouldn't be the worst thing either - We will need cap space as much as anything in the next couple years (DD, Sheahan, Helm Abby, Mraz heading soon to be free agents)

Why would it be unreasonable to think Holland can't spend $8mill on goalies. Lunquist alone makes that and he's never won a cup, so to have that kind of tandem at that price is feasible

True and it would only be for 3 years and could be a great situation for us especially with a D corps still sort of in transition. These next 4 years could allow for a smooth transition, but Jimmy might not be okay with that situation. Likely, if he loses his job he'll want another shot at a starting position.

I think Mrazek has the potential to be an elite NHL goaltender, and I do believe he will be our clear number one at some point this season, possibly as early as Christmas. Like many have already pointed out though, it would be a huge mistake to trade Howard before next offseason unless some team blows us away with an offer we can't refuse (not going to happen...). The competition will be great for both goalies and we need the insurance in case one of them goes down with some sort of injury...

You just sit back and wait to slap the s*** outta anyone that talks bad about mrazek don't ya lol. I'm a huge mrazek fan but I'm trying to temper my expectations for him, atleast for next season.

i am all for having the tandem this season, but i am not all for having $8-$10M tied up in both of them next season.

$8 million for both would'nt be too bad. Dallas has $10.5 million tied up in Lehtonen and Niemi for the next three years.

Tampa almost $7.4/million, rags have almost $9.25 million, Calgary has $8.3 million, Washington has $7.1million, Vancouver has $7.5, Columbus has $8.2million, Minnesota currently has like $10million, Colorado has $7.35million, Nashville has $7.75 million

Honourable mention, rask is the only goalie on Bruins roster currently so they have at least his $7million cap hit

There was at least three or four teams I left off the list with *only* $7million
