Moving Jimmy Howard

Recommended Posts

From the 4th quatrain of Frankstradamus...

In the year 2015 the man named Howard rises above the snowy mountain with the winged wheel and sweeps the land like a fiery octipii beating all enemies with his padded legs. Fire turns Joe into ashes as the people scream for joy which turns into pain as Peter screams. When should arise a great earthquake as Peter rounds out his game in the inferior league with his over aggressive style as he descends to hell and Howard rises to heaven.

1. Moving Howard right now is one word. Dumb. Unless you get a quality backup in return you go into the season with a goalie going into only his 2nd real season who's regular season play is straight up bipolar backed up by Tom freaking McCollum.

2. I can't wait for 4-5 years down t he road when Mrazek is in the same spot as Howard with the fans. It doesn't matter how well he does the fans will always want the next guy.

No. We need him as he currently brings more upside than not.

Jimmy may start playing like he has to win a job, rather than playing knowing he's the undisputed starter. We may see a different Jimmy this season...a bit more hungry. Maybe a bit of edge within the locker room.

Challenges Peter daily to play at highest level to compete for starting job.

Regardless of who is #1, having either of them as a back-up is solid. It's awful nice to know that you have a back-up plan come playoffs, especially if your starter is getting worked.

I'm all for keeping Howard for this season. He will need to be traded next summer as we will simply not have the cap space to keep him. Jimmy should be playing for his next team. The better he plays this season for the Wings, the bigger the market will be for him next summer. He is in his prime right now so he has to capitalize on this. I hope he can stay healthy. One of the problems over Jimmys tenure in Detroit is that he hasn't been pushed by anyone. Along comes Mrazek and he is the heir apparent. He has a strong playoff and now the writing is on the wall for Jimmy. It's important now to have 2 solid goalies. I can see Tampa giving Vasilevsky more starts this year in Tampa. Hopefully Mrazek and Jimmy push each other and they both play very well.

More like the few people here who believe Mrazek should get most of the starts. The minority. Hey I'm fine with it. Lol

Actually most people believe this. I say he is still unproven and they should split the season to start, whoever is playing better gets more starts, why does one HAVE to get all the starts and one only play 15 games?

Tell me where I said this? I'd be fine with Mrazek getting 50 and Howard getting 32.

I's go the other way around. Nothing like crushing a young guy by putting all the weight in the world on him. This season I would PLAN-things change, to play Howard 50 and Mrazek 32. next year do a 50-50 split with each playing 41 games. Then 2 years from now go mrazek 50 Howard 32. take our time and build him up as Howard starts to age. Then move Howard. It gives us 3 more seasons to find the next good young G prospect and develop him in the minors.

of course if anyone calls and offers an AS power forward that is signed long term and under 30, for either of our G's you have to listen. But the chances of that happeneing are very small.

Who would take on a 5.3 cap hit for a guy who wasn't even the starter, I'd be okay with that but we wouldn't be able to move Howard if we kept him that long either way they'd have atleast 11 mil tied up between each other by then I wonder what the cap will be like by then.

I'd be okay with the wings riding out Howard's contract as long as we don't lose anyone for it.

I think the solution is to trade Mrazek. Howard is an all star when he's not injured. Mrazek is too inconsistent. We don't need his amazing saves or great puck handling ability. We don't need his wins or shutouts or confidence. We don't need his blue chip talent. We have Jimmy. He played like crap last year after he came back from his injury. But lets give him the starter role because he makes 5 mil a year. He has been consistent for years. Consistently average. For the first time in a long time we finally have a young blue chip talent in goal which the Wings have drafted and developed. It was tough to swallow that game 7 loss to Tampa. The one takeaway I came away with was at least I knew we have a franchise goalie in Mrazek. I figured most Wings fans would be excited about it. I was wrong I guess. To each their own. I'm still excited about Mrazek. This team is lucky to have this kid.

I don't think it's ideal to move him soon, but if someone comes along and offers up something decent for him, I think Holland will listen and consider it. If Mrazek starts off humming along and Howard plays well in his starts, it would be ideal to move him sooner rather than later while we can get something decent for him. It's not going to get any easier to move a goalie with his contract as time goes on, and even in Holland's roughest years, he's proven again and again that he's quite adept at finding capable backups at great price points. I see no reason to believe he can't do it again. But I think the earliest this gets done is at the trade deadline. Next summer is most likely when it'll go down though.

Every year in every sport teams overpay for players that have a great half season or playoff run. In many cases those deals fail. To small of a sample size. That is the heart of the question here. is a guy that has played all of 30 games in the NHL ready to be a #1 G? That is a huge risk to take that leap. There is no need to rush into anything. we have depth! That is a good thing. The flip side is, we move Howard and mrazek fails. then where are we? Screwed. Like half the league now that can't find one good G.
