Moving Jimmy Howard

That's ok. I'm done. Seems like unless you have 1000 posts or have been here for a long time, you're not really wanted here. Thanks for erasing the personal insults. I appreciate it. Take care everyone. I wish you guys all the best. Let's go Red Wings!

God forbid a goalie would have to earn it. Not Jimmy though.

That's why the majority of us are vouching for a 50/50 split. Mrazek gets ample opportunity to prove whatever success he had last year wasn't a fluke (and to iron out his inconsistency), and Howard has an opportunity to try and get back to his pre-injury form. And on the event that one of them falters, we still have the other one to rely upon. It makes so much sense that it's really baffling that this thread has made it more than one page deep.

I really don't care who plays more. Just ride the hot hand.

Because of Mrazek's emergence people see the opportunity to trade Jimmy for something else we need, not to mention dump a contract that some don't like. I think he's more valuable to us right now in a Wings jersey, but if Mrazek dominates the next few seasons I'll be open to trading him.

What I don't get is the rush to trade him. Mrazek playing well is not going to destroy Jimmy's value, he's a very well established work horse goaltender in this league.

And it's like some people don't realize that keeping Jimmy means that this team begins the 15-16 season with what will most likely be a very good goalie tandem. But hell, let's nueter that option right off the bat because who'd want that kind of stability?

I don't think I suggested any of this

Some of the move Howard feeling comes from his cap hit. Like we are somehow in cap trouble. we are not. Using generalfanager's numbers, as of today we have 53.1 million towards next seasons cap. That includes franzen. We should resign the following guys: helm, Abby, sheahan, pulks, dekeyser, and mrazek. maybe bring back guys like miller and andersson. The cap should be around 75 million next season. That leaves us with about 22 million to resign 8 guys. Plenty of money. Add another 4 million to the pot if as expected franzen ends up on the LTIR. if Kindl is traded/cut/bought out that could add another 2.4 million to the pot.

In the summer of 2017 another 12 million comes off of the books plus whatever the cap increase is, so another 15+/- to spend.

Point is we are in great shape cap wise.

I have been and will continue to be in Mrazek's corner...

anyone know how many giveaway goals jimmy gave up when Franzen was on the ice? I kid, I kid!

like I said before, I am good with the tandem this year, I just fear the potential cap hit starting next year, or having a $5M backup...

Another way to look at this would be that we would have a number 1 goalie only making 600k or whatever it is. Either way we have less than 6M tied up in both our goalies, and that number doesn't change regardless of who is number 1 and who is backup.

Lets not forget how Jimmy injured his groin in the first place...

https://youtu.be/Yg4iA46DA2M

He literally has a guy on either side to pass the puck to... and he leaves it behind the net for the opposition to pick up. Look at his indecision of what to do with the puck right before he's like "f*** it, I'll just leave it here"

You don't get that kind of dumbf***ery from Mrazek

Mrazek had his fair share of rough moments. Like when he gave up an absolutely terrible GWG to Zach Trotman with a couple minutes left and the Red Wings got no points in a huge playoff race game against the Bruins.

You can spot-pick moments with any goalie. Obviously puck-handling isn't Howard's forte, but let's not pretend Mrazek is impeccable when it comes to playing the position.

Anyway, I'm with you. It's going to be awesome to have two capable goalies this year. Especially for the 7 back-to-back games early on. Also, it will be refreshing to see the tandem get managed propertly by Blashill. I think we can all agree that handling goalies was not one of Babcock's more potent skills.

I agree with this^^. I also agree with the people who want to trade Howard after the season if Mrazek plays as well this as I expect he will. I hope to see Howard end up with more of the starts and be 'the starter' most of the season though. Hopefully we can end it with him at a high value. Then Holland can kick a lot of tires and decide he just wants to keep Jimmy anyway.. After that someone can start a Howard Bashing thread, Franzen may be gone by then and if he is we will certainly need someone on a long contract who is being overpaid and lazily sitting on the bench.

Yeah, that one was horrid for sure.

The same people complaining about how inconsistent Mrazek is will be the same ones jumping on his bandwagon when he wins most of his games including ones where the team is outplayed. I can play this game too.

Oh who would want Mrazek? All star Jimmy time!

The same people drooling over him will be ready to run him out of town when he has a bad stretch after a bad injury

I doubt that. It'll most likely be the people who would have rather stayed with Jimmy claiming they were right all along.

Either way, wouldn't reassessing your opinion as a situation changes be the reasonable thing to do?

No one is drooling over him, the last time we had a goalie here who could dominate we won a stanley cup.. Hasek, im not talking about 08 either, We have Datsyuk and Zetterberg here and nearing the end of their primes/careers we are close to being stanley cup contenders imo trading Howard and aquiring a top 4 defenseman would make us a contender, his cap hit and skill also don't help but i wouldn't care or even suggest trading him if i didn't think thats all we needed, yes Mrazek is unproven still i think i suggested somewhere before that we shouldnt move him until the deadline. I want D and Z to win one more cup so they can get their numbers retired because they deserve it, i don't dislike Howard but his play sometimes makes me angry so it may seem like I hate him, i really just want to see our Vets win one more cup. I'm a young fan and i wasn't really into hockey when they won all those cups, i didn't really start watching hockey a lot until Lidstrom retired which is a damn shame, i love this team and the current players on it including howard, quincey, franzen, even bonehead smith, ive watched just about every game since 12-13.

I said next year. This year is fine, but next year you may have a backup making $5M...

Do you think RFA Petr Mrazek is going to make 5 million dollars? I don't. I don't think that's remotely probable, regardless of the season he just had.

Everyone always thinks that good young players, with tons of potential, are going to make a fortune after the ELC runs out. They might for other teams, then don't for the Red Wings. Look at Nyquist and Tatar. Both are on reasonable bridge contracts. Mrazek will be too.

I agree with thoughts about Mrazek's next deal, but I think LeftWinger might be talking about Howard though if that's what you were responding too. As in, Howard would be a $5 million backup.
