Curtis Glencross regrets taking hometown discount

I'm sure the Flames regret that decision as much as he does.

Why would they regret it? They got good production, for less than market value, and then traded him for futures. They got everything they wanted out of the deal.

I don't think there's a problem signing and hometown discount. But if I were going to do the organization a solid and take less money, you bet your ass I'd want a no trade clause. No way would I do them that favor without some insurance for myself.

...

Bergeron is awesome but he signed a 10 year contract something Toews and Stamkos couldn't / can't do so the cap comparison makes no sense. if Toews signed for 10 years it would be 8,5 vs 6,8 aav and at that point I'd take captain serious.

....

Bergeron's deal is for 8 years, exactly the same length as Toews'.

I don't think they're asking for your empathy, they're just being interviewed.

I never said Glencross was asking for empathy. My original comment was in response to Franks comment where he said:

I feel bad for him and his fate is exactly the reason why players shouldn't give a discount at all. I'm always amazed when people say players should sign for a lot than they are worth to do the teams a favor.

Frank said that he had empathy for Glencross, my response was that I don’t feel bad for him, and that people (by people, I mean players, fans, etc) can’t expect anyone to feel bad for them. My comment was not to construct a narrative that Glencross himself came out and asked for empathy, it was simply my view on situations like this.

I believe that athletes are extremely lucky to be able to be paid the way they are paid, and while they have every right in the world to feel the way they feel, and I truely dont begrudge them a bit for it, the general public for the most part doesn’t want to hear them complain about money. When they do, they come across as entitled and spoiled. While Glencross has every right to feel upset, fans on here have every right to be annoyed by his comments when he voices them publically, weather it was him blogging or being interviewed.

Funny thing is, I was actually going to put in my response (not that he is asking for it) because I thought someone might jump on me for it, but I decided against it. I guess I need to be 100% clear on here.

Who asked you to empathize with him? He didn't. Neither did anyone here.

You're entirely fabricating a point that Glencross was never making, just so you can disagree with it. He was talking about his experience with topics (contract negotations and home town discounts) that affect every single player and organization in the industry. The point was never, "how can I make regular joes empathize with me more". And it shouldn't have been, because your empathy for Curtis Glencross means to him about as much as his empathy should mean to you. Zilch.

That wasnt my point, but I see why you thought it was based on the way I wrote what I wrote. Sorry you took it that way. I'm just an advocate ;)

What determines a player's worth? If the money is there because customers are paying to see Stamkos play and buying his jerseys, where should the money go? Should he only take $80 million and the owners pocket another $20 million? Should Curtis Glencross get it?

I don't care who gets it. Just stating that it's ridiculous someone gets paid that much to play hockey. If you don't think so, that's your opinion.

Because he was being interviewed?

If people are so bitter that these athletes are paid so much money for playing hockey, why even watch the sport? You're the ones ultimately paying their salaries.

Hockey is entertainment. And entertainment is big business. These guys come from an elite talent pool and are paid accordingly. Technically they're actually underpaid because their salaries are artificially restricted by the cap.

Does'nt make me bitter because I think they make too much money. If people want to pay them that much, have fun. How do I pay any of their salaries? Because I own a few jerseys and watch games online for free? I've been to one NHL game in my life and I doubt i'll ever do it again. Way too expensive. And it's good their salaries are restricted by the cap. At least theres SOME sense of trying to keep them in check.

That was my first thought, if he wouldn't have been traded I have a feeling he wouldn't have regretted taking the discount, or at least he wouldn't have said anything about it.

I would've regretted it too, take less money so you don't have to uproot your family, find new living arrangements, etc just to have them ship you away anyway.

sure it does why do you even care it's not your money? Would you rather see billionaires getting even more ? It's not like he is asking for sympathy although I do have some for him because no matter how rich someone is uprooting a family and having your endless loyalty not returned and even used against you is a tough pill to swallow for almost everyone.

and guess what I'd rather see hockey players making more than some athletes from questionable leagues or sports doing so. If someone wants to pay a guy like Stamkos 200 mill I wouldn't have a problem with it either but guess what if I were a billionaire i would do it too because the success and Jersey sales will make up for it in no time.

No offense but I think hockey players deserve a lot more respect than what they are receiving for putting their body on the line for almost 8 months a year to entertain fans !

And at the end of the day, no matter what they make, they're lining the pockets of the "billionaires" that own their contracts. Players are only a cog in a system that funds billionaires. If you really didn't want to see the high and mighty collect you wouldn't give a crap about the industry that pays them, but you do.
