FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) Great point, however if he is guilty and she takes the settlement, she forever looks like a liar and a golddigger - even if she was telling the truth - , while he - although not 'guilty' in a court of law - will be forever tarnished. No one wins here, either way. It's like OJ winning the criminal case, but losing the civil case. I would think a settlement is likely. If he's not guilty, she's going to take the settlement and run. If he's guilty, she may well rather end it with something than face a jury and have to recount the most horrific thing that's ever happened to her, knowing that in such a high-profile case people will be glued to every word. If I were in her shoes (assuming he's guilty), I'd take the money. Justice would not be served, but if you find yourself in that situation, sometimes your own peace comes before the greater good. At least he's been exposed and other women will be warned. Edited September 9, 2015 by FireCaptain 1 twopups reacted to this
PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted September 9, 2015 That is the problem : It will never completely go away if he agrees on a settlement. But processes like this tend to get very ugly for the accused weather he or she is guilty or not so it's absolutely understandable if Kane wants to get out of this without the case going to trial. Yeah, but honestly It would never really go away even if he was acquitted by a jury. It would always be tied to his name unless the accuser withdrew the charges (maybe not even then). I guess I meant pay to get it out of the news. A trial would make it a big story for a much longer period. But I withdraw my comment about him buying to make it go away. There's a lot of reasons for settling before a trial for both sides whether he's guilty or not and we obviously don't know what's going on. Always disliked Kane and let my cynical side get away from me for a second there.
Guest Playmaker Report post Posted September 9, 2015 Ironic how this thread started out discussing the impartiality of those on juries, yet how many posts are assuming Kane's guilt? A settlement implies nothing, nor does an accusation. But he plays for the Blackhawks, so that does it.....
barabbas16 499 Report post Posted September 9, 2015 Thing is, they never would. I imagine that organization cares more about trying to win more Cups with their "core" than what people think about them employing an alleged rapist. Yet, if this was a non-core player rather than Kane, I imagine the Blackhawks organization would more than likely rest on their impeccable moral code. You know, like the Kings. MasterPavel 115 Report post Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) Whoa guys, I never claimed there was a perfect system okI wasn't attacking you at all, and i apologize if it came off that way. I was just curious where you feel the direction our justice system should head. I 100% agree with you that our system is not perfect. I have thought, over countless glasses of bourbon, how I would change it if I had the power too. Edited September 9, 2015 by MasterPavel

kipwinger 8,524 Report post Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) If Kopitar or Quick got caught with pills would their contracts be terminated? Lol. About as quickly as Kane's will be. Sports is a business, and the people that run sports teams operate them as such. Every fan wants championships, new stadiums, and flashy free agents. You do that by winning and putting butts in the seats. And sometimes, to do that, GMs are willing to ignore the ethical imperatives. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it is what it is. Businesses exist to make money, not to enforce the social good. Expecting them to do the latter, rather than the former, will always disappoint. Our very own Mike Illitch does plenty of unethical things in the name of our team. Nobody calls him out on it. So lets not pretend its just a Kings or Hawks problem. number9 3,297 Report post Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) If Kopitar or Quick got caught with pills would their contracts be terminated? Kopitar and Quick could probably whoop their own mothers and Sutter would give them butt pats for it. Pills though? PILLS??? Now that's crossing the line, even for them. amato 3,210 Report post Posted September 11, 2015 After being postponed earlier this week, the latest word from the Chicago Tribune on Thursday is that a grand jury is expected to resume regarding Patrick Kane‘s alleged rape investigation. Paul Cambria told the Tribune that the grand jury wasn’t pushed back on his request, and he wasn’t sure why it was canceled. Cambria also doesn’t know when the grand jury will resume, only that it will happen soon. Others told the Tribune that it could happen sometime in the next two weeks. There’s no word how this may affectKane’s involvement in Blackhawks training camp, which kicks off on Sept. 18. http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2015/09/11/report-grand-jury-for-kane-case-to-resume-soon/

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted September 17, 2015 As much as I'd like to see him suffer if proven guilty, he hasn't been yet. It's inconsistent with the Voynov case, but in the Voynov case, it was more likely that he'd be charged and found guilty simply due to evidence and police witness. Kane's case is still open. It may not even get to the grand jury. If it doesn't, he is a free man and will need that camp to play hockey for your team. I can see Chicago's point in having him at camp. They need to prepare for the future, whichever way it unfolds. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
