Versteeg traded to 'Canes

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Chicago has traded Kris Versteeg, Joakim Nordstrom and a 3rd round pick(2017) to Carolina in exchange for Dennis Robertson, Jake Massie and a 5th round pick(2017.)

...sorry if this is already mentioned somewhere else, but I didn't see it.

I was relieved when it wasn't for Staal!

It is also to be noted that after this trade, the 'Canes have 10, yes TEN picks in the first three rounds over the next two drafts!

Actually, they have nine. Scroll down and see left sidebar on generalfanager (link below)

http://www.generalfanager.com/teams/carolina-hurricanes

One additional first rounder (in 2016) and two additional third rounders (1 in 2016/1 in 2017)

Meanwhile, Chicago has a measly four picks in the first three round over the next two drafts

2016 - 1st and 3rd

2017 - 1st and 2nd

Looks like Chicago is still trying to eek enough space out to sign Kreuger. Almost there guys. LOL.

Didn't see the tweets that they signed Kreuger right after to a one-year deal.

Wonder who they'll be jettisoning next year to sign Shaw, Seabrook, and again... Kreuger.

If

Which in all likelihood, they'll have to be repeating next year if they want to re-sign any of their free-agents.

I guess that pretty much depends on the Kane case. If he is guilty and get jail time, I'm guessing they can pull a Richards and void his contract. Then they should be fine.

well they would lose one Heck of a player but that's really a meh move.

their priority should be to re-sign Seabrook and that will cost at least 7x7

Not a "meh" move lol. If he goes to prison, they lose him anyways and by doing it they would save 10.5 mil in cap space for the next 8 years. Plus, who wants a convicted rapist on their team anyways. (this post is all assuming he is convicted and did do it)

The meh move was targeted at the Versteeg, Nordstrom trade both aren't anything special and the Hawks should be able to replace them.

Sure the Hawks would have 10,5 on cap space but they need to extend Seabrook which will cost a lot and find someone to make up for losing Kane. Cap space is nice and everything but if there aren't any players to use it on a team won't get better, which is why Sekera of all people got the biggest contract this off season, I am not counting Tarasenko because he wasn't an ufa.

My bad Frank, I thought when you said "meh" you were referring to voiding Kane's contract.

I completely agree with you about Seabrook, I think he and Keith are the reasons why Chicago is what they are, more so then Toews who gets all the credit.

No worries I honestly thought Keith was getting robbed in terms of Norris this year. He does get a lot of credit finally and more people are mentioning him in the same sentence as Toews which is only fair because Keith is that good.

Seabrook in my mind is very underrated although he allows Keith to do the things he does. Seabrook is a big body , can our up points and is very good in his own end. Those 2 are without a doubt the best pairing in the nhl right now.

That is until we see DD and Mr. Green as a pair. :ninja:

I see a move like this and I wonder if it influences free agents at all? Versteeg has been moved twice now by the 'Hawks, both times after winning the Cup and due to a cap crunch. Worked out well for him, but what if it hadn't worked out? Would that deter players from signing in Chicago?

I think the whole 'winning 2 cups' part would outweight the 'being traded twice' part for most people.

Versteeg was never signed as a UFA by the Hawks, anyway, he was to traded for from the Panthers.

UFAs looking for long term contracts probably wouldn't be looking at the Hawks since they have so many guys locked up and have little space. Their UFA additions will probably be like Richards for a while - short contacts to try to win a cup.

Edit: depending on what happens to Kane, of course...

Well, yeah... that's why I said it's worked out well for him. Had the team not won two cups with him, he might feel a little different about being moved twice. It was less about me criticizing Chicago, and more about me wondering how other players view the situation. I always read about how Ken Holland's loyalty is a draw for free agents, but the 'Hawks "load and unload" method seems to be working out just fine.

Also, not sure if you were talking about his recent deal, but he was signed as a UFA by the Hawks in 2009-10, then traded to Toronto after Chicago won.

He was sort of a UFA 2009. He came from their minor system (after being traded from the bruins as a prospect) and should have been a RFA, but they made some kind of an error in qualifying him. You could actually argue that him being traded the first time was the fault of this mistake. If he was a RFA he would have had to sign for less than the 3.083 that he got and maybe they would have been able to keep him. It's kind of beside the point, though.

My point was that It doesn't really matter for their situation if players see this as disloyal - they have their core (I know some people hate this phrase for some reason), big impact players locked. They'll need complimentary short term pieces for the next while. Players looking for a long term gig wouldn't be looking their way, anyway, because there's no space.

And, also, no I don't think UFAs would see it disloyal. I think it's acknowledged that they'd like to keep him if it wasn't for cap constraints. You could even see it as loyalty that drove them to bring Versteeg back into the fold when they had the means/space.
