Wings Release Training Camp Roster

What begins? Larkin being awesome, or Jimmy letting in goals?

Both, actually. I was waiting for the "Larkin's amazing, but he won't make the team. Useless veterans" and "See? Howard's already letting 'em in. What a bum" crowds.

It's a little early, though. I'll give them until about 7-8 tonight to read over the scrimmage summaries.

How many bad pass goals has Howard allowed so far? 1? 10? 100?!?!?!

Smith sure improved when he decided to throw the puck from the bench onto the ice and get a penalty in one of the most crucial games to get into the playoffs last year.

Im sorry but having physical ability isnt the only thing that makes you a good player, having common sense does too this isnt college anymore, cant get away with stuff when hundreds of eyes and cameras are on you..

Smart players tend to do well in this league no matter their shortcomings, intelligence can outweigh flaws

Apparently I'm not the only one...

Ansar Khan - "A first-round draft pick in 2007, Smith was an offensive defenseman both at Wisconsin and during all or parts of three seasons in Grand Rapids, where he had a total of 27 goals. But in two full seasons with the Red Wings, he's scored just nine goals, partly because he hasn't been given much time on the power play. Will that change under new coach Jeff Blashill and will Smith play a bigger role in the offense?"

Jeff Blashill - "I think Brendan has that ability to do that (power play)," Blashill said. "You have to see where the whole puzzle fits at camp. He's somebody I know that's done that in the past because he's done that for me in the American League (for half the 2012-13 season)."

"lol"...

So powerplay success in college and AHL translates to NHL success? Cause in 4 years he's not done very well even in the small powerplay chances he's gotten, he's only scored 1 goal.

Anyway 9, we'll have to agree to disagree on Smith... once again... I think he has improved his defensive game drastically over the course of the last season and a half. I'm aware that he isn't the most sound defensive player, which is why I'm excited that Blashill is coming in. I'm hoping he will give Smith the green light to do his thing and jump up and make plays in the defensive zone (aka play to his strengths), something Babcock never would have done. I'm hoping now that Quincey has ironed out his game since the last time they were paired together, they will complement each other a little better and develop some chemistry (assuming they stick together on the third pairing...).

Improved? Sure. Drastically? H*** no. I think you give Smith way more credit than he deserves my friend. Which makes me wonder if he truly is your "boy" or if you are being objective about this. :)

I'll level with you. New coach, he should get more opportunities. Clean slate

If we don't see drastic improvement in numbers and game play then I stand my ground that he sux. After 5 season I'm not sure how many more excuses can be made for him

Is it just me, or has smith been one of our better playoff performers the last two years?

Against Boston I was confident every time he was on the ice, and he had a fairly mistake free series vs Tampa, plus he seemed to be buzzing all over the ice.

He has impressed me in the playoffs, much more so then in the regular season.

No ones going to argue that he doesn't make some bone headed mistakes that make me question his intelligence, but when the speed is ramped up, especially in the playoffs, he seems to thrive. Which is what excites me about him under Blashill, and why I would advocate keeping him around, if even for just his potential.

The speed we have coming up through the system could lend itself well to a blue line with smith on it, assuming he can limit his gaffes.

Yes, he was. That was a mistake, though, since he played well the rest of the series. Wasn't the healthy scratch a result of him catching that line-drive on the bench or am I messing the timeline up?

Nope, you got it right. Babs punished him for that stupid boneheaded move and when he got his chance to play game 3 he took it and played awesome

Tatar and Richards showing some chemistry today. Nice to see Pulkkinen get one (happened during 3-on-3)

That's a final from the #RedWings Day 3 scrimmage in Traverse City. Team Delvecchio 2 (Tatar, Richards), Team Howe 1 (Pulkkinen).

Edit:

#RedWings Blashill said Brendan Smith will get a chance on the PP in the preseason.

Weird, Pulkinen on the 3rd line wing and Glendening on the 2nd line wing?

Excited to see what Svech does.
