vladdy16 2,154 Report post Posted September 28, 2015 TML GM Lou Lamoriello has put the announcers on the no-fly list for the Leafs. They will call away games from a monitor. This will save approximately $200,000 per season. The team is owned by Rogers and Bell, who split the radio rights. It's been suggested the team could pay for the travel, but the money would still be coming out of their pocket, so I'm not sure that will happen. I'd be super pissed if I didn't get my Ken Daniels for away games. How much is Leafs Nation willing to put up with? How much goodwill has hiring Babcock earned them? And how long do you think it will be before LN finally declares they're mad as hell and they won't take it anymore?
kipwinger 8,440 Report post Posted September 28, 2015 To clarify, it's only the radio announcers. It would be the equivalent of the Wings leaving Ken Kal in Detroit to call games from the TV.
vladdy16 2,154 Report post Posted September 28, 2015 Here's a good article from the Sun (!) explaining well how I felt about it, but it seems this is now a non-issue according to Joe Bowen's (the announcer) Twitter: Joe Bowen @BonsieTweets 42m42 minutes ago After some great conversations today with all parties we are back on the road baby!#TrainsPlanes&Automobiles #LetsGetThisSeasonStarted Once I get confirmation and details from another source, I will post if someone else doesn't get to it first. Or are they calling them, just not live in the building? (ie. the first part I bolded). Edited September 29, 2015 by kliq

RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted September 30, 2015 Maybe if I was announcer, I'd prefer not to travel if I can call it from a monitor. Business travel is fun if you're in your 20's but after a while, it's a PITA.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted October 1, 2015 Everyone here is focused on the angle that they were somehow attacking the announcers or ruining Leafs nation. No one here raised an eyebrow that they were trying to cut a mere $200,000 by doing this? Aren't they the wealthiest franchise in the league?

jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted October 1, 2015 (edited) It is weird that they even thought about this to begin with, though. Edited October 1, 2015 by jimmyemeryhunter
kipwinger 8,440 Report post Posted October 1, 2015 (edited) Maybe they (correctly) thought that nobody listens to, or care about, the radio anymore? Edit: Unless you don't call it "radio" and do call it "podcast". Then it's a hit.
