if he was Canadian you'd be calling him the next Carey Price, I wouldn't tag him as elite yet (Price, Holtby, Lundqvist) but he's certainly on the same level as a Quick/Rinne. The only thing the kid lacks is experience at the nhl level.

Nope the career of Price is far from over nobody knows what he will accomplish in the future but there is no denying that he is the best goalie in the world right now.

I wouldn't call Quick or Rinne elite, maybe Rinne use to be, but Jimmy Howard could win cups with LA and probably put better numbers up than Quick

Quick can definitely turn it on but I haven't seen enough in the regular season to consider him elite, Rinne has taken a few steps back in the past two seasons.

People said the same thing about price early in his career. Also, Petr's been pretty consistent this year - just a couple bad goals (the one mistake handling the puck). I've heard a number of commentators say that Mrazek could be for the wings what Price is for the Habs. But that is about potential and I don't think anyone is calling Mrazek elite at this point.

For LeftWinger, nobody's arguing that Howard's the guy after he wins. It's more arguing for Howard's solid play and his place on the team. It's clear in this discussion that the board is largely in favor of Petr, I think the discussion is more for those that like the duo vs. those that want Mrazek to play every game as the outright #1. Howie's really played well except the one game so I don't see why we'd pile the load on Mrazek where we could tire him out before playoffs, injure him, or bring out some of the inconsistency that we saw the second half of last year (when we rode him when Jimmy sucked).

And I agree with e_prime - goaltending is definitely not an issue with the team.

Did you fail to watch the game last night? Petr made some spectacular saves. The breakaway save in the 3rd, and the save right before the 2nd goal was one of his best saves of the year. Mrazek has some of the lowest goal support from his teammates when he plays compared to other goalies. FSN detroit talks about this all the time. Despite that, he still wins far more often than not. When Carey Price came into the league, the Habs WENT with him and got rid of Huet (who was their starting goalie at the time). Look how that paid off. Bob McKenzie believes that Mrazek has the ability to become an elite goalie like Price, but as others have said, he lacks experience. Hard to get experience when he has to share games with Jimmy. From this point on Mrazek should get 2 of 3 starts.

Mrazek was 2 GA, 34 Saves, .941 Save % last night. If we could get that stat line every night, we'd be in great shape. I'd like to see less shots against, but seems like our opponents are the logo hunters now.

Actually yeah, I think coming in to a thread just to state how you think the thread shouldn't exist is against the rules. I would try to find it but I can't find the goddamn rules anywhere.

Anyway there is a reason to keep discussion open. Things change. I've changed my position on Howard since last season. Other poster have changed or modified their positions. Where else would you post them but in the thread dedicated to the topic.

And no, goaltending has not been our problem this season. That doesn't mean there's no reason to discus who you'd like to gets more starts, how many starts, goaltending stats, whether or not X goalie lost or won last night (and maybe more importantly the manner in which they did so), how the team played in front of goalie X, ect....

We have two fantastic goaltenders that folks want to fruitlessly scrutinize to no end.

I disagree with the idea that one should get more starts than the other or that one is better than the other.

Nit picking their stats is pointless. Each have had great games and each have had poor games.

Mrazek is a great young goaltender and Jimmy Howard despite the fact that he isn't elite, isn't getting traded.

There. Is that better? Is that more along the lines of something you'd like robo?

I do believe, unless it's detrimental to the board or discussion in general, that telling somebody "how to fan" is also "against the rules."

not as much as I would have liked but the overall product has been pretty boring so I'm not missing much.

that being said I'm fine with the split neither goalie ran away with it and till someone does there is no reason to change it. Yeah Howard wasn't good tonight but neither was Mrazek against the Wild. With all the hype he is receiving one could believe he is the second Hasek. I mean naming him in the same sentence as Quick, Rinne seriously ?

What game were you watching last night?! Mrazek was SOLID against the Wild, by far the best Wings player on the ice. HE GAVE THE TEAM A CHANCE TO WIN. Something Howard has trouble doing. I think Blash needs to stick with Mrazek. In fact, if he would have been sticking with Mrazek and if he used half decent lines, I think we would be solidly in 1st place right now. The longer this season goes on, the more I question Blash and his ability to coach.
