Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 Larkin has to be staying, I mean why keep him this long if that isn't the plan? Holland has stated that Cleary won't take anyone's roster spot so I guess he's staying in case any of the waiver guys get claimed, if they don't then he'll get waived tomorrow. What difference would it make if one of Miele or Callahan are claimed? We're still at 15 forwards. One of Clearlyneedstobewaived, Andersson, Ferraro, or Larkin still need to be waived to get to our 23 man roster. Stop stringing that broken old man along... Get'er'dun Kenny! krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 So am I the only one that thought Cleary didn't look THAT bad in the few games he played? In my opinion he looked much better than Andersson. Not saying much I know, and I'm not saying we should necessarily keep him, but I'm okay with him sticking around as the 14th forward until we're fully healthy (if we ever are)... Larkin has looked great but I still think he needs time in Grand Rapids. We just have way too many forwards right now. I know I'm in the minority here, much like I was this time last year with Jurco, but I'm hoping he gets sent down tomorrow... Ferraro is not waiver exempt. He won't be sent down. 1 PavelValerievichDatsyuk reacted to this

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 Forgot Marchenko was hurt. I'm a little bummed about Jensen, too. I thought he did a fantastic job during the preseason. Good for Ouellet, though. Seems as if they're debating whether or not to waive Cleary/Andersson so Larkin can stay up. I know it's more complex than just keeping Larkin up, but that debate should take about three seconds. Fonzarelli 73 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 Other teams let their young players play. If they keep Anderson and Cleary, then I will be greatly disappointed in Blashill and Holland. That is not putting your best team on the ice.
Zetts 236 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 I can already anticipate the meltdown if Cleary stays and Larkin goes down. Just to prepare people, if that happens, it is NOT because Cleary "took" Larkin's roster spot. It's because they didn't think Larkin was ready for a top 3 line role and didn't want him playing 10 minutes on the fourth line and/or being the 13/14 forward. Cleary, on the other hand, is perfectly-suited to that role. The two of them are not in competition for the same roster spot. 5 kliq, PavelValerievichDatsyuk, Jesusberg and 2 others reacted to this
e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 @Krsmith -- I know Cleary hasn't been that terrible, but I think we're at a point where this team is going to have to make really tough decisions about the roster and specifically at forward. Cleary v Andersson really shouldn't be that difficult of a decision. Andersson is ten years younger than Cleary and $135,000 cheaper. As the 14th forward and barring serious team injury issues, a healthy scratch. I don't need to be wowed, impressed, or even think that one is better than the other. I need servicable. Andersson is that. Keeping Larkin up makes sense because he's waiver exempt, can slot into the top nine, and can easily be sent down when Helm or Datsyuk come back. You've already got Miller, Glendening, and Ferraro that can handle fourth line duties. When both Helm and Datsyuk are healthy, whomever was kept (Andersson or Cleary) is likely to be exposed to waivers anyway. ...and then we're back to a fully healthy roster situation. Who sits? 1 kickazz reacted to this
Richdg 267 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 I know Larkin has played great, but send him to GR and let him play 18 mins a night. We are still talking a very young player with only a handful of pro games. The standard to be called up should be the same for everyone in GR: When you are dominating, you come up. Keep it simple and stright forward. ATM if Larkin stays in detroit he is going to be playing wing, not C. He is a natural Cman and needs to be developed as such. With Z, Richards, Sheahan, and Glendening already on the team, he isn't needed as a C. Let's get him 76 games in the AHL so that he is ready to play next year when Richards is gone. 4 kliq, krsmith17, PavelValerievichDatsyuk and 1 other reacted to this
nyqvististhefuture 1,002 Report post Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) What's the limit of games larkin would have to play this year to take himself out of the Calder running next season? I know most people will say vs eichel and mcdavid he has no chance of winning the Calder but selfishly i want him to be in contention when he plays and not play say 25 games this year and go back down and if he's a full wing next year not be able to have a shot at the Calder I suspect he will start in detroit and wouldn't surprise me if he produces I wouldn't mind either way though if he stayed or went down to Grand Rapids .... At the very least we could get him for a playoff push ... Our kids would most likely be better than anyone we can get at the deadline Edited October 5, 2015 by nyqvististhefuture
e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) I think they should let Larkin get a taste, whether it's at wing or centering the 3rd line. (Richards - Sheahan - Larkin - Glendening) It's not going to ruin his development if he gets a handful of games. EDIT: I think he'd lose waiver exemption way before the number of games to keep him out of contention for the Calder next year. He certainly should not be kept up long enough that he would lose his waiver eligibility. Edited October 5, 2015 by e_prime

EDIT: I think he'd lose waiver exemption way before the number of games to keep him out of contention for the Calder next year. He certainly should not be kept up long enough that he would lose his waiver eligibility. He can't lose his waiver exemption, 160 games for that. But if he plays 11 or more, his exemptions would lower from 5 years to 3. Though I think if he's good enough for 11+ games this year, the odds of him spending more than 3 years in GR is pretty slim. The slide rule would be more likely to keep Larkin under 11 games, but I don't know that the Wings would be too concerned about that either. 1 derblaueClaus reacted to this

krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted October 5, 2015 e_prime, the point wasn't that I want Cleary in over Andersson, or vice versa, the point is, I don't want Larkin in the lineup on opening night. I said the same thing with Jurco last season, and I think he should play a full season in Grand Rapids. If he absolutely dominates the American League, and we get hit with injuries at Center, then we can call up either Larkin or Athanasiou. Why should Larkin get the nod before Athanasiou at this point? AA put up better numbers in pre-season and was just as noticeable out there on any given night. Larkin should and most likely will play the season (or at least a good portion of it) down in GR. I look forward to watching him, along with the rest of the boys tear it up down there. 2 e_prime and kickazz reacted to this
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted October 5, 2015 I'm also pretty disappointed that Jensen got sent down before Ouellet. I think Jensen was the much better player of the two, lead the entire team with a +8 rating and lead all defenseman with 4 points (0 goals, 4 assist) and 7 shots on goal in 6 games. And he's also that highly coveted right handed shot going for him. I honestly think he's a better all around player than Ouellet, but then again, I'm one of the very few that aren't all that high on Xavier. Sure, he's a good player, and does a lot of good things, but in my opinion, he does everything average, nothing really stands out to me, other than him being smart and safe. And I guess that's good for a third pairing guy, but in my opinion Jensen brings that, plus a lot more. He's an unbelievable skater, very good passer, and for the very few mistakes he makes, he has very good recover ability. Very disappointed to see him still behind Ouellet and likely Marchenko as well. He should be ahead of both by a mile in my opinion. 2 NotTooAbby and LeftWinger reacted to this

krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted October 5, 2015 Andersson, quick? Seriously? Cleary with two bummed knees would skate circles around Joakim f***ing Andersson... I think the difference is Ouellet and Jensen are already at similar skill levels and XO is 22 and Jensen is 25. Logic says XO has a much higher ceiling than Jensen. I like that Xavier is getting this experience early/now. 1 kickazz reacted to this
jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted October 5, 2015 I bet they're just keeping parking up for his taste of Nhl action post NCAA career.
