Roster Moves by the Wings

number9, I don't get what their age has to do with it, if anything that argument should go in Jensen's favor. He's been with the organization for 2 years longer than Ouellet and still hasn't gotten a single game in the NHL, despite consistently outplaying him. Jensen looked much better in camp a year ago, was the last defense prospect to get sent down, and out-produced Ouellet in the AHL, but yet Xavier gets rewarded with 21 games in the NHL. He again looked better in camp this year, and he gets sent down and once again Xavier gets rewarded. Because he's a couple years younger? Since when is that a good thing for the Red Wings?...

Jensen is a far superior skater, with and without the puck, his transition game is by far the best of all our prospects in my opinion. He can skate the puck out of danger, or he can make a quick tape to tape outlet pass under pressure. Last season Ouellet had 16 points (1 goal, 15 assists, 0.308 P/G) and an even +/- rating in 52 games with the Griffins and 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) and a +4 in 21 games with the Wings. Jensen had 27 points (6 goals, 21 assists, 0.360 P/G) and was a league leading +30 in 75 games with the Griffins and I'd be willing to bet that if given the opportunity he would produce well more than 3 points in 21 games with the Red Wings...

Quincey skating with Green.

Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive 1m1 minute ago

Larkin skating with Zetterberg and Abdelkader.

Richards is not there because he is in Chicago getting his SC ring

Helm left the ice before drills started.

With Richards not practicing I don't know if I'd read too much into the lines today. Sheahan skating with Franzen and Jurco.

No surprise on the D Pairings:

Defense: Kronwall-Ericsson Quincey-Green Smith-Kindl Ouellet-Marchenko

Also, it looks like Jimmy will get the opening night start, which should be no surprise

Age is my best guess. What I think that indicates is that Ouellet has more room to grow, whereas this might be nearing the peak of Jensens game. And that's why XO is getting fast tracked over other guys including Jensen.

And this is going off the fact that they're both about equal in play. Jensen is very good, and he's right handed, sure, but XO looks very good too. theres a reason he's getting playing time.

I'd respond but I'd just be repeating the exact same thing I said in my previous post, the same way you just repeated the exact same thing you said in your post last night...

Anyway, regardless of age Jensen > Ouellet last year, this year, and in coming years, in my opinion...

Wow Larkin made the opening night roster?... I'm very surprised to say the least, and honestly a little disappointed...

I think the key factor is consistency. Watching both XO and Jensen on the Griffins last year, you can tell when Jensen is having a good game and definitely when he is having a bad game, but XO always looks solid and never like a liability. This in my opinion is why XO was up in Detroit during half of the Griffins games I attended last year, and why he got the nod this year.

So why do you think they're playing the worse defenseman then if Jensen is so much better?

Swayze, I watch a s*** ton of Griffins games every year, and I definitely don't see the same thing you're seeing and apparently not the same as management either... I know +/- is a flawed stat, but come on, to top the entire league, you have to be doing some pretty good things on a consistent basis. In my opinion he does everything moderately to much better than Ouellet. Other than "solid" or "steady", I find it hard to see what else Ouellet is as a defenseman.

number9, that's a great question, one I don't have an answer for...

So either your wrong about Jensen, or the Red Wings are making dumb moves. The Red Wings don't make a lot of dumb moves..

I think the ceiling is much higher for Ouellet

Blashill said Larkin will start on line with Zetterberg and Abdelkader in all likelihood.

Whoever starts in goal Fri. vs. Toronto (I'm guessing it will be Howard), the other guy will start the next night in Carolina, Blashill said

...or they want to get him more NHL games to showcase him for a trade.

I very well could be wrong, but I think Jensen is better, and I also don't think Ouellet's ceiling is very high. I think he is probably the most overrated prospect in our system. That, I hope I'm wrong on...

How I've read these two players (and I could very well be wrong cuz I haven't seen as many GR games as you) is that Jensen is more offensively capable and likes to join the rush and make things happen. Oulette is more safe and steady and defensively responsible. This may be a case of the team valuing defensive play for that final spot over offensive play. If we didn't land green in the offseason maybe it would be Jensen who stays up? And again, I'm only basing this off their games in the NHL that I've seen.

Larkin - Zetterberg - Abdelkader

Tatar - Richards - Nyquist

Jurco - Sheahan - Franzen

Miller - Glendening - Ferraro

Pulkkinen

So, now it is really down to Cleary v. Andersson for your 14th forward...

No one on waivers because they're maximizing cap calculations, I assume. Kindl on IR something to do with that. Someone do maths.

Right here. Wings want cap hit closest to absolute max before putting Datsyuk on LTIR. Gives max possible cap space

Red Wings not putting anyone on waivers today.

Interesting

They have until tomorrow at 5pm, but does this mean a possible trade is looming?

It's gotta happen sometime.

...or not.

I don't know that Jensen is more "offensive" to Ouellet's "defensive" style. Jensen is certainly a more dynamic player because his skating allows him to lead the breakout himself. But I actually think Ouellet has the better point shot, and is a better passer. Also, I think that Jensen is a very good defensive player on account of his recoverability, but Ouellet is probably more positionally sound. Which stands to reason when you consider that guys who aren't speedsters tend to rely on positioning.

Stylistically, I'd say Jensen is like a poor man's Brian Campbell, while Ouellet is a poor man's Ryan Suter. Obviously neither of them are likely to be as good as the guys I just mentioned, but they're similar in style. And I think it's awfully hard to pigeonhole those styles as either "offensive" or "defensive".
