kliq 3,755 Report post Posted October 8, 2015 (edited) http://www.tsn.ca/former-regulars-face-new-nhl-s-harsh-reality-1.373333 It makes sense. When you have certain guys like Toews & Kane just as an example making huge amounts of money, rather then paying a vet 2 or 3 mil a year, it's more affordable cap wise to play youth on an entry level or close to an entry level contract. I wonder if these guys held out at the beginning of UFA hoping to get paid more?? Edited October 8, 2015 by kliq

And the world turns. 5 DatsyukianDekes, rick zombo, Mckinley25 and 2 others reacted to this
kliq 3,755 Report post Posted October 9, 2015 Its things like this which just make me respect guys like Datsyuk and Lidstrom so much more. They were always willing to take less so their teammates could get more and so they could be on a winning team. I have never understood why certain people/posters push for top stars to break the bank, there is only so much money to go around and while the top guys do deserve to get paid the most, there is a difference between being fair and being greedy. 2 krsmith17 and F.Michael reacted to this

The other side of the coin is, when these players 'cash in' they set a new benchmark for all players. By getting the most they can they're effectively raising the price on future contracts for their fellow players. It's a players vs owners mentality that is accentuated with every lock out. I still prefer guys like Lids obviously, but I understand why others do what they do. Money talks.

Ya I know your right, but I wish the players realized that with the cap they are not helping the entire NHLPA but taking as much as possible but rather just the other top end guys. And that's the ironic part. It doesn't trickle down. They just take what they would've given to middle of the road players and give it to the superstars 1 kliq reacted to this
Internet.Unknown 422 Report post Posted October 9, 2015 More reason the Commie salary cap should be abolished.
number9 3,297 Report post Posted October 10, 2015 Not surprising. UFA Cody Franson - a solid #3/#4 Dman on just about any team in the league wasn't signed until 1 month ago. It appears to be yet another 'tactic' by the NHLPA that is going to backfire - have your 'high end' players take up a significant portion of the cap - then the 'above average' guys can suffer. 2 DatsyukianDekes and F.Michael reacted to this

DatsyukianDekes 2,428 Report post Posted October 12, 2015 I blame the math freaks. They didn't do a good enough job with the calculations.
Bill Berzeench 310 Report post Posted October 12, 2015 The Wings are moving this way, too. Will be interesting to see Larkin get 7.5 mil per for 8 years in 2018. Maybe Green's deal was kept to 3 years to see how the team's talent shakes out.
number9 3,297 Report post Posted October 13, 2015 Stupid math freaks playing their hockey on excel spreadsheets. I need to listen to godsmack and have a go at my speedbag just to be able to handle this.
DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted October 13, 2015 Anyone with any sense at all saw this coming a mile away. It's the same in the NFL, stars get paid and you fill out the roster with cheap players as best you can. 1 Internet.Unknown reacted to this
91forever 8 Report post Posted October 15, 2015 wow looks like Boltz (Eric Boulton) made it on conditional contract for the Islanders. hehe I went to school with Eric and I still remember when he was drafted back in 1996. Glad he can continue to be employed in the league, and it is sad that these talented players in the article are having a hard time keeping their jobs. As long as they have a clean bill of health you would think they could still play but i understand there is a risk with taking them on.
