too many penalties and turnovers today... But our best goalie kept us in it tonight and in the 3rd we outplayed them.

Larkin is all over the ice, Z looking nice, I thought Richards did a lot of nice things on defense.

Still we had a hard time getting it going. Like other have said, if the Wings can win games like this, this early, without MagicMan, DD, and Helm... Cheers!

Datsyuk asked Babcock to play him with Abdlekader. No?

So Pavel's the genius, not Uncle Mike.

If you're even serious.

No that I know of. Babcock paired him Datsyuk and then he realized the value he possessed.

Not vice-versa. At least that's how I remember it. All those quotes about "Piano mover" came after he was put there by Babcock.

Seriously everyone respects that Dats is a lose. But Helm is a huge loss too. One of, if not, Our fastest and most defensive forwards.

Helm's soon going to become the Burger King fry to Larkin's McDonals's fry. Redundant.

Edit: Unless he actually gets used in the bottom six. Then he's an upgrade over at least three of those six guys.

I give Babs the credit on Abby because when he chose to play Abby at this position, at the time, Abby was far from what we considered a top line power forward. By fan standards he was a grinder. A career 3rd/4th liner. Babs trusted him and made him a top 6er. Look back to when Babs first assigned him first line duties. RW fans almost universally rejected it regarding Abby as a bottom 6er. Now look at him. Abdelkader is honestly one of Babs best moves as a coach. Literally no one saw it coming besides him.

I think it was simply plugging abs in Homer's spot after he left. Abs was doing the same things getting in the dirty spots and Babs liked that dynamic and envisioned Abs for that role after Holmstrom left. I think last year and certainly at the start of this year abs is developing into quite the power forward on top of being a pain in the ass in front of the net.

"This game was all about goaltending. Petr Mrazek stole it in the first. (Cam) Ward couldn't do it in the third." - Chris Osgood

Nothing to add, Ozzy is right. This game was kind of a stinker, but what there is one thing that is positive about it (well actually two, since we won) : Last season we would have lost these types of games, this year the Wing seems to be able get the win despite a very bad period. I know, it's far to early in the season to tell definitely, but I like the way the team reacted last night.

I was at the game. As many have already said, terrible first two periods. I thought Larkin looked a little out of place in the first, but once Blash switched lines in the third, his line was clearly the most dangerous. I think Blash needs to keep Larkin at center. It's clear he is more comfortable there.

It's motor city, not comfort city. I think the center position requires vision and skill of a veteran. He needs a few years to be a good 1-2 center. Until then, keep left or right.

He's a good player.

I was reinforcing Son of a Wing's point that alot of NHL players score at the junior level, and it doesn't mean their coaches messed them up or underutilized them.

*Obligatory Kirk Maltby scored 50 goals in juniors reference*

lol.....case and point! I agree with your original post.

Some people were questioning Abby's top 6 role this past off season. Nuts!

The only way you get good playing center is to play center. But I do agree he has some work to do. There have been some obvious moments where his inexperience got him in a pickle. Nothing I'm particularly worried about cuz he'll figure it out with time, but you can see how seasoning Grand Rapids can benefit a player in those situations.
