MLSE signs sponsorship deal with Draftkings

We're proud to be the first partner for DraftKings in Canada," David Hopkinson, MLSE's chief commercial officer, told TSN in an interview. "Their product is exciting for fans and we're looking for many years of continued partnership as they grow their business in Canada

We're talking about packages for our VIPs that give them discounts off their food and concession bills, a chance to attend the post-game press conference with the coaches, and some really special packages, too," Elbaum said. "We're talking about a handful of fans each year having the opportunity to travel with the team for road games. It doesn't matter how much money you have, you can't buy that kind of opportunity.

Officially, the NHL has opposed sports gambling, even though the league is among DraftKings' investors.

Both DraftKings and FanDuel already operate in Canada, offering their gaming services even though some legal experts say it's "murky" whether they are operating within the confines of the law.

That's so disgusting after all the crap Leaf fans have gobe through they are now exposed to the next wave of online poker called daily fantasy sports. Legal experts aren't stupid they 'll soon figure out a way to close that loophole in the law.

I mean how can betting money on a daily basis on real people's performance not be considered gambling? Injuries, illnesses and just not feeling it are always an X factor that will change on a daily basis.

So the NHL itself is against gambling but has invested into Draft Kings...wow.

Goes to show how high the so called standards are...such a joke.

Really great timing after stuff like this http://www.vox.com/2015/10/6/9465873/draftkings-fanduel-fantasy-sports-scandal

Maybe it's like a charity... Maple Leafs fans can now try to put together a team that doesn't suck.

I do agree that the legal loopholes will either be closed or torn wide open for commercial reason in the somewhat near future.

I think they'll be closed because it technically is like poker just with "real" sports-stars.

Are you anti fantasy sports? Or are you upset that MLSE is getting involved with it?

He(?) did say in the state your unpopular opinion topic that fantasy sports should be forbidden or under stricter rules so my guess is probably anti. I do Draft Kings and Fan Duel, I enjoy it very much. I'm really excited that eSports is apart of Draft Kings now! Edited by HadThomasVokounOnFortSt

Seems pretty straight forward. Fantasy sport is gambling. You're just betting on a collection of individuals rather than an entire team. Currently legal, but who knows for how long.

It's fun if you play small amounts. On Friday night i almost won thousands on a $5 bet in Fanduel. Only ended up with $50 though. I had Z Abby and Larkin FWIW. I almost always just do 2 dollar games too.

The reason it's legal I guess is because it's considered "skill" while betting on sports in general is "luck", That's how they won the case back in like 06' or something.

I'm against the daily version of it because I think it has nothing to do with skill and is just a gambling loophole. I mean year long leagues with a one time payment are a different thing but Draftkings and Fanduel are operating in a very grey area.

I've bee running with the Z Abby Larkin line too, up about $75 this season through fanduel (haven't won crap on DK).

Last year I hit 1st in a $2 Fanduel game winning $1400! Schneider came through with the Shutout for me and moved up a lot higher on my list of favorite hockey players that night lol.

It was in my Paypal account within 24 hours in it's entirety though they did send out a 1099 for taxes at the end of the year. If I'm not mistaking any net profit over $600 throughout the year they are required to send you tax papers on. While I hit for $1,400 my 1099 stated something like $1100 and some change as your losing entries through the year are deducted from your winnings.

I don't gamble, so I have no idea what gambling laws are like. But isn't sports betting popular AND legal in many places? Is the point of contention that these sites are just gambling, and therefore should be subject to the regulation of the various state gaming commissions?

More or less yeah.

I don't think anyone has a problem with fantasy sports or gambling, but it does maybe give the wrong impression to have a sports team associated with sports gambling.
