Abdelkader is a useful complimentary player. Smart GMs don't give useful complimentary players, especially 28 year old physical ones, 7 year deals. Terrible. The likelihood of him being worth that over the last 3 years of the deal is close to nil.

How many years were Maltby, Draper, and McCarty here? All made good money and all had long term contracts.

Kindl has 1 more year on his contract. I agree with your assessments of our D contracts. These are the prices dictated by the market.

Cleary costs .950 to the Grand Rapids Griffins and marks 5000 against our cap (nhlnumbers.com). Franzen was worth his production and now costs us nothing (Capwise) if he stays on LTIR.

Howard is currently top 10 in the league for stats. That's what a goalie at his level and experiance costs. I know everybody's on the Mrazek train now, but Howard's price is fair.

So if I take your rankings for: 1,3,3,4,5,5+6 that just means we chose depth since we couldn't land another top pairing guy.

I would argue DK is a #2 or on his way there. Also E is at least a #4.

We have good goaltending to cover for the D, which isn't quite as solid as we'd like. And now prospects with potential and low price tags on the way. All good to me

What are Mantha's connection to Michigan? He's from Quebec.

You're probably joking, but I doubt that. We've had many Lifelong or long term WIngs that nobody considers retiring: Holmstrom, Draper, McCarty, and reading into the future Kronwall, Franzen. Unless he transforms into the second coming of Hossa, he'll fall in with these guys

His grandfather-mothers side played for the RW's.

I have no idea but did any of them at any point have 7year contracts? and into their mid to late 30s?

I think Holland plans on continuing with the youth movement. Abby will be a great complimentary guy with Dats and Z and then with Larkin and AA. We are just now seeing our high end prospects seeing NHL ice time. The deal is long but it's not like Abdelkader is being paid like some corner stone of the franchise, he's being paid like a good complimentary forward. Who knows what 20 goal scorers will be getting in 3 years and this saves us from getting a gritty scoring forward through FA. Something we will always need even int the future considering our prospects

Having a guy that hovers around 20ish goals and leads your team in hits at 4.25M is a pretty good deal. 5 years would have been the perfect deal imo but I'm sure Holland considered this but Abby didn't want to hit FA on the downside of his career with only a few years left in him

Hovers around 20ish goals?

He hit 20 once, his next best season was 10 goals and he did that twice. Abby will never crack 15 goals again let alone hover around 20.

Anyone who thinks Abby is a 20 goal scorer going forward must think that Cheechoo is still a 50 goal scorer.

I was joking, but with a small portion of seriousness.

You know how every once in a while somebody makes a thread here to (or tries to) make a serious case for Malby's or Holmstrom's or Osgood's Jersey to be retired.

23 goals last year. 10 goals in the Lockout shortened season (you have to look at games played) so you almost double that calculating for a full 82 games (19 maybe).

Then the 2 full seasons he played before that while on the 3rd and 4th lines (7 and 8 goals).

13-14 is a concerning dip down to 10 goals, but otherwise, if you account for the line he was playing with and the role served, it looks like a pretty steady progression.

I think he could score around 20ish for another few years if he's paired with Hank. He's just going thru a slump at the moment.

Holland has lost his marbles. 30 million in guaranteed money is absurd for a one time 20 goal scorer who will be on the wrong side of 30 for most of his contract.

Between this, Weiss, kindl, green and E... This guy really just doesn't have the touch anymore. This team is incredibly bloated with wasted salary.

For the record, im fine with the deal. I would have liked to see something with less term and/or money, but its nothing to get upset over.

HOWEVER... this really makes me question Holland's ability to negotiate. Like, how much was Abdelkader's starting point? Did he want Tarasenko money or something? Because otherwise it seems like Holland just laid down on this one.

Meh Holland has made some mistakes. A lot of them are hindsight to us. But it's not entirely Holland if you think about it.

It's what this league is becoming. Locking up guys left and right. Used to be where you locked up your elite players.

Now everyone seems to be getting locked up.

To be honest though we dont overpay players as much as other teams have in the recent past. Just not a fan of super long term deals.

Here's a hint for you: He NEVER had it. Do you think its a coincidence the Stars and Blackhawks are kicking ass now. Devellano, Andersson, Bowman, Nill. Those are your hockeyminds. Holland is the Derek Zoolander of the hockey world. I think I got the black lung, pop.

First Miller (you're wrong) and now this (you're right). You enjoy putting a target on your back, Bill. Get ready to duck.

I agree with your assessment of Holland. His success is the product of the '89 draft, Andersson, Bowman, and Nill.
