I wouldn't take a 35 year old Kovalchuck anyway. His game is built alot around speed and shooting the puck. Skills that go down as you get older.

Guy has Semin/Afinogenov written all over him

(Not saying you want him in Detroit or anything) I didn't even know about the 35+ rule

If we can get Kovalchuk, we get him. 24/7, twice on Sundays. He's an instant plug at 1st line wing. There are 5 guys in the league with his ability or greater. We dont have any of em. We need 1, or maybe 2 if Mantha doesnt pan out.

I'm not necessarily saying I want him here or not.. but if he's on a team friendly year by year contract, I absolutely do. Which I think is very possible given his time out of the league. Then again it's just as possible that someone throws a bunch of term at him..

He has much more potential than semin imo.

But if he came to Detroit, it'd have to be a lower risk, high potential type of move.

Floater in hockey terminology just means awesome russian. Fedorov is a floater.

You mean the hart trophy , selke winning forward that was put on defense for 6 weeks that played a 200ft game floater? Lol sure. Fedorov was a floater alright. So is Datsyuk.

Lines: Abdelkader-Zetterberg-Datsyuk Tatar-Larkin-Nyquist Sheahan-Athanasiou-Pulkkinen Miller-Glendening-Helm

Really liking those lines.

Abdelkader should be on the first line. Z and Dats needs muscle for the corners and net front so me likey that.

We could really use a skilled big man with Larkin also but they don't grow on trees. I'm skeptical about that 2nd line.

For now I'd like Sheahan centering that 3rd line, if only for defensive purposes.

Guess we'll see if they keep these lines come tomorrow.

I thought AA has been exceptional with his defensive responsibilities. That doesn't worry me a bit. I agree on the second line point you made, but I am excited to see what that line can do together. If nothing else, they will be flying around out there.

Good point rooter Athanasiou has shown good D. I'm just skeptical about the young guns, there's so much quirks such as system and the fact that the game is so freaking fast compared to the AHL.

But I wouldn't mind watching a game with those lines. Just break them up if they don't work.

Completely agree. It's been a short sample size of course and he could always regress when teams start game planning around their line. Interesting note here.....

Tempers flared in practice as Pulkkinen went after Smith and had to be restrained by teammates.

LOL

Brendan ******* Smith.

Ah yes, Smith's resume: -

Sound like a 12 year old during interviews - check

Make idiotic plays - check

Get the "dumbest red wing" title - check

Hit the captain on open ice during game - check

Get involved in a team practice fight (probably the first time since Primeau/Probert fight) - check

Way to keep it classy in the Red Wing's organization guys.

It says Pulk went after Smith, not the other way around...

Yeah but my money's on Smith upsetting Pulkkinen by doing something stupid. Who'd bet against that?

I mean I wouldn't…BUT perhaps Pulk is doing this to light a fire under his own ass and play better?!?!

Arguments , tempers, altercations, fights involve two people. Not one.

But you've already only blamed one…Smith...

I don't want to argue about this. This is stupid hahahah

Blamed? Putting words in my mouth there guy, I'm looking at Smith's awesome resume, not blaming either.

My post specifically says "involved in a fight" not "start" or "is responsible"

Yup, Smith was definitely the cause of this... It's inconceivable to think that Pulkkinen may have been out of line here...

Again, Smith gets s*** on when no other player in his situation would have. If Khan reported "tempers flared in practice as Pulkkinen went after DeKeyser...", no one would think twice about it. No way it was LGW's golden boy's fault...

DeKeyser made two awful decisions with the puck in the last couple games. A terrible turnover against Dallas that lead to a grade A scoring chance, and against Washington he took a penalty for flipping the puck over the glass with 5 minutes left in a one goal game. If that were Smith, people would still be bitching about it. But no, it was DeKeyser, so there wasn't even a single mention of it in the GDT. I found that quite funny actually.

We will hear about the dumba** play Smith made against Tampa in the playoffs last year for years to come, but if it were DeKeyser it would have been forgotten about instantly.

Smith still makes a lot of boneheaded plays, no doubt, but he's not nearly as bad as some people make him out to be.
