Yah, nobody says hey, Nyquist was a minus 3 and was picking his ass the whole game instead of helping Smith and the Defense. They look at the only guy trying to play defense out there while 4 other red wings are ready for lazy boys. Smith isnt Lidstrom. Get over it.

LOL. "Only guy trying"? Get real.

Smith's guy was Nichushkin. All he had to do was take the man. Instead he basically just stood there and allowed a shot AND another shot off the rebound, which ended up in the net. None of this has anything to do with Nyquist. Nice "try".

Yah, the forwards arent supposed to help out at all.

Spot on joe. He is just not a good defender. Jimmy wanted to kill him, I lost all (little i had) faith in him too.

He's suppose to be lying over the attacker on attempt nr 2. Penalty, game misconduct or no punitive action doesn't matter.

You can't let your man get two clean shots off in the slot especially when you're standing in position. Howard made a great save and then gave Smith the wtf look. Even smith knew he blew it. still not the reason we lost but it was a bad play by smith

What are you guys blaming Smith for? It's Nyquist's fault for picking his ass instead of helping out.

Imo smith will never be a consistent top four defensemen in the league. He can have stretches where he's a pretty solid defensemen in that he keeps the puck moving up ice but he'll never put up points and he'll never be consistent enough where he isn't costing your team. He's a good #5/6 and that's all I expect out of him at this point.

Pretty happy with Marchenko's play though I think he should stick with the team and I think even though Kindl has the same troubles with consistency as Smith, and is probably worse defensively, he has the ability to put up points so he should be given another shot before too long. Smith really responds well after a scratching too anyways

There's a reason Babcock didn't play Smith regularly. While he is an excellent puckmover and can create space and outlet from his own end he is simply not a safe option and his defensive provess is very irregular. Trade him, for anything, in my opinion.

You put way too much stock into plus/minus as a stat. Can it tell you something? Sure. But just because someone is minus doesn't mean they're bad. Remember that.

I understand what you are getting at. The top line d sees better forwards, so they should tend to have more minuses. They get more minutes, though, so some of that will be compensated for by pluses. The checking line sees the top line of the other team, so expect more minuses for them in the same fashion. I get that. But when you look at a career of 3 or more seasons, the plus/minus stat is telling of the type of player you are looking at and how he impacts the team. Point well taken, tho.

Plus minus is bulls***. It should be eliminated. Look at the OT goal Kindl scored the other night. I forget who the two forwards who set up the play were, but they went off on a change, and Z and Larkin I believe were on the ice, they both got a +1, while the two guys who set up the play got nothing at all. Crazy.

Youre right. Bobby Orr had a huge plus for his career cause of multiple bulls*** stat luckouts like that. Half of hid Nortis trophies are b.s. too. Why even keep any stats?

Exactly. The stat is relevant. Dismissing it is silly.

I'll jump in and agree +/- is relevant, but not as telling as some may think. You have to look at it a certain way

For example, Larkin being +11 on our team says something.

When OV was -30 and scored 50 goals, thats absolutely pathetic.

If someone is -15 and theyre team is in last place and everyone else is around -15, its a team stat.

If someone is a career +400 player, such as Lidstrom, it shows that his teams were always relevant and he played a huge part in that

+/-, like all stats, is useful if the interpreter is able to view the stat in context of the bigger picture, and knows how to propery interpret it. Sometimes players' presence on the ice contributes to goals, even if they didn't register any points (net front presence, good first pass out, force turnover with good forecheck, etc). And sometimes the stats are coincidental. But its definitely a useful tool if you know how to use it.

Smith and Pulkkinen get scrappy in practice? Lol.

I'd call Smith a ****** for going after one of the smallest guys in the league, but he did go after the biggest too, so maybe he's indiscriminate. Either way, looks like Riley's brother is all in on trying to earn a solid spot in the lineup.

That or he's dumb. Really, really, really, dumb.

Well you've certainly got to admire his commitment to being a bonehead. He's got moxie. He's like the Cool Hand Luke of dummies.

All in by scrapping with Pulk? How does that make sense tho?
