Athanasiou recalled by Red Wings

Although I'm pretty psyched about AA, specially after the great pre-season he had, I really don't get what the situation with Jurco is. After last season I thought he was gonna make his mark and earn his spot, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If they're not gonna play him maybe it's time of thinking of a possible trade, He deserves more ice time and maybe could be a better fit elsewhere.

Blashill said they have a long-term plan for Jurco. Part of me thinks that they realized they messed up Jurco's development and are working with him hard in practice. Maybe I'm just reading to much into the situation, though.

I don't think it would be smart to give up on Jurco.

Happy to see AA.

Blashill was talking about Jurco needing to skate better a couple weeks ago. My take away from his comments was that Jurco hasn't been putting forth the required effort in practice. Whether that's because of back issues or a poor attitude, I don't know.

Or maybe they just think his skating isn't good enough. That is the one thing that is usually worked on intensely with prospects in GR.

Thanks guys, For what I 've seen from him he has a lot of potential and he's a hockey smart guy. Definitely wouldn't want him to go away, that's why Detroit excels at developing young talent. Ken Daniels just said that 20 guys on the Red Wings bench were developed within the organization. I just don't want them to do the same as they did to Filppula and Hudler, although they really shone in their new teams and probably was for the best for their careers.

Impossible. AA is only a top 6 guy and cannot absolutely cannot play anywhere else in the lineup. I learned that here at letsgowings.

Rolls eyes...

If he's going to continue getting 9 minutes a night here in Detroit, I'd rather him be getting big minutes in grand rapids.

Its better for his development.

Look what happened to Jurco.

He's better off on that third line imo. Makes us better and is better for him playing against NHL players. I don't know why Pulkinnen is gifted that third line scoring role with PP time he's probably our worst forward

I guess it's because that heck of a slapshot he got. Maybe he just needs to get in the zone for once. He's either off net or breaking sticks. Although he had a good rush on the third

Was he even on the 4th line? From what I saw Glendening, Helm and Miller were together.

Skating ability isn't an issue with him.

Well, I disagree. He's fast, but that's not all that skating is about. There was that recent GWG that was due to him pivoting for a breakout and not being able to handle the pass from Kronwall. Also, against Tampa he had a breakaway and lost the puck off his stick, tried to kick it up to his stick, stepped on the puck and fell. I think his issue with skating is while with the puck and on pivots.

If you read the original article that we're talking about, they are just giving him time to right these things in his game:

Edit: Nevermind. This one sounds like it is about consistently skating hard during games:

From what I saw, aa moved up and helm got demoted.

That's when you seen helm start to turn into a wrecking ball.

I wish i could find a gift, but helm coming back and stealing the puck in the offensive zone amid a flurry of his ice spray was a beautiful photo opportunity.

I want athanasiou to be developed properly, and I don't want him to be in the position Jurco is, but if he can push helm into being a better player then it will be worth keeping him here. His speed is too good to ruin him completely anyway.

He played awesome today.

When you say things like this, it makes you sound 12 years old. If you don't agree with people that's fine, but act mature about it.

Again, the reason why people (myself included) don't want to see AA on the 4th line in a permanent role is because people don't want to see him regress in his development.

The perfect example of this is Jurco. In retrospect, he should have played in the AHL last year on the top line, as coming here and playing in a chequing role with the Wings hurt his development. I know he got his chances on the third line, but when that didnt work he was sent down to the 4th.

In a video game, putting your most talented offensive players in works. In real life there are many more variables involved.

I thought that AA played great too, but I think the Helm-Glen-Miller line wasn't really a demotion . They were matched against Stars top line and played respectable minutes. AA only played a team-low 9:36 (but made a lot of it) and Pulk and Andy only played a bit more because of special teams.

I thought that Helm had his 2nd good game since coming back. I would have prefered him with AA on that 3rd line

it was, IMO, his best game since coming back.

And when they play like that against the top line in the league, its definitely not a demotion in the normal sense of that. But if our line up was where it should be with the talent we have, helm would be destroying the talent like that normally.

So this is good.

Blashill sees what he has.

Holland realizes(slowly) that Todd nelson isn't good.

(Aside from the fact that Sproul has had a resurgence. So boom. Todd nelson, associate coach)

Not sure what your problem with Pulks is. By pretty much any statistical metric, he's been one of our better forwards.

I have a feeling he's going to be our new Franzen. No matter how well he does, some people will always think it's not enough.

Dude's got to at least hit the net with his slapper before he can be the next anyone.

Helm should be on the shutdown line if we're going to be using them so much

I thought the Wings played pretty damn good defensively, but have to be better in the offensive zone. Adding some size would help. I don't know if I mentioned this but I really don't like Pulkinnen in the lineup

Is AA going to stop working hard? If not, he's not going to be in the same position.

Then the stats lie. Pulkkinen has not been one of our better forwards.
