Wings Need on D and Glaring Inconsistencies

If we're taking him in his prime years then it will most likely be 8 years and he'll get paid for how good he will become unless he wants a shorter deal for a bigger pay day in the future... Right now his market value is around 5.5M... When he enters his prime he'll be the undisputed #1 and a better defensemen

There's no way he signs for under 6M

Yeah he doesn't score very much but DD is more than just a one dimensional shut down defender. I don't know why we get so little scoring from our defense I think it's a system thing

I thought that too under Babcock, but Blashill let's the d join the rush like forwards so it's probably just our players.

Around 30 points isn't terrible from a guy as good defensively as deke though.

DD is a 30-35 point per year Dman. Which would put him in the top 50ish most years. He is also a positive +/- Dman that is typically in the top 50 each year. He is also only 25/26 and most Dmen don't reach their peak until about 30. He may also be a future captain or AC.

All of that will add up. I see him averaging at 6-7 million per year and I am hoping that is for all 8 years of a max deal.

I think Marchenko would be the guy to be swapped with Quincey. Doesn't Marchenko still have a 2-way contract? He doesn't need to be cleared from the waivers I don't think. Kindl or Smith would obviously have to clear waivers and Wings don't want to lose someone they can possible use for trade bait.

Holland is picking his butt. This issue needs to be solved NOW.

I didn't have any problems with the lines but the D is another story. There is no way we can afford to have 52 & 55 on the ice at the same time! Also we need some D that will hit! Our D was credited with 2 hits today - so was Tatar!!

Yeah, I hated the pairings today. We know 55-52 does not work at all and the other two pairings were players matched together that play similar games. I would prefer a bit more balance to each pairing.

I don't know who to put with Kronwall though at this point. He seems to make everyone worse this season. Smith and Marchenko have been very good, so I would keep them together and then go back to DeKeyser-Quincey when Quincey returns because they can provide a more "shutdown" pairing like last season. Then it leaves Kronwall with Green still and no Ericsson either, which we all know won't be the case.

Beside Smith, no one can hit... So I don't expect any trades on DEF as we have 7 DEF + Marchenko + Ouellet... There is no real top 4 DEF in minors nor any TRUE TOP 4 def (Russo could develop in one top 4B option). Kenny seems to be very satisfied as we are playoff contenders (1st rounders) and then he's on vacation.

Boychuk and Hamilton are the best defensemen that have been traded in a very long time. Both from Boston who were going in a different direction. Not likely we see a #1 get moved, and if one does and it's not to us, than you can blame Holland.

Suter, Yandle, Niskanen, Hamilton, Leddy, etc etc etc. We always end up with the 4th best option and overpay for him. Green cant crack Washington's top 6, but that's the guy Holland gets a boner about. Ridiculous.

Kronwall is a minus 11. Ericsson is a plus 6. Something is telling me that a lot of the defensemen are taking the blame for Kronwall being a crappy player this year. Perhaps 55 needs to sit a few games?

You've said Zetterberg needs to sit and a couple other and now Kronwall. They're the leaders and captains on the team - you don't sit them. They're vets - they know they're not playing up to snuff. You can talk to them, but if you sit them, you rob them of their authority. With this young team (and getting younger) we'll need them to show the way.

Zetterberg leads the team in scoring and is a plus 6. I said he needs to sit for rest. Not performance. Kronwall needs to sit for poor performance.

I'd like to see an analysis on the quality of competition that each defenseman faces and then judge why certain D-men are doing well and certain aren't. I can interpret stats but I'm not the best at finding the advance stuff and presenting it. If someone can look into this I think we could all objectively judge the players and see for ourselves. It might help explain why Kronwall is doing "bad" but Marchenko or Smith are doing "good". I'm inclined to say that Kronwall probably faces tougher competition. But I don't monitor each shift he's out on - this is where I think the advanced stats would help.

The thing to take away from this is that Kronwall is nowhere near the player he was in his 20's. His Fenwick For and Corsi For have both gone from excellent to extremely mediocre. Is it time to kick him off the team? No. Is it time to start playing him less minutes and against weaker lines? Yes.

Yes there's decline we know that. What I want to know is the quality of competition he faces vs everyone else on the Red Wings defense. Because it's easy to say he's -11 and single him out if he's facing tougher competition. And would anyone else be any better? If so who?
