When does Larkin get the C?

Interesting viewpoints. I thought there would be more support for Larkin getting the C early, but that just isnt the case. Z it is!

Even if for some reason Hank were to no longer be captain beyond this season, it still wouldn't go to Larkin yet. By the time Hank retires it is very likely. But there are others who have a much bigger leadership role on the time at this point in time.

Teams only make such a young player captain when they are a basement team and choose a certain player to build their team around. Like the situations with Toews and Crosby. The situation with the Wings is nothing like that. The team has loads of leadership and is still competitive. Making a 19 year old captain on this roster would be a dick move towards the leadership on the team. It will be different in a few years once Hank, Dats and Kronwall have all retired and guys like Larkin naturally become the new guard.

The thing is - I think we very well could be a basement team without #71.

Larkin's been great, but Z has more points, is more important as the 1st line center, and is also the leader on the team. We don't see what happens in the locker room, but players have relayed a couple of speeches that Z has given.

The idea that we would diss Z by taking away his C is sooo ridiculous and uncessary. He's been everything you expect a captain should be. Larkin's played 20 games.

Making Larkin C would

- Put extra pressure on him

- ensure that he'd have to be paid more

- Diss Z, Datsyuk, Kronwall

I dont want anyone to be dissed.

The team has yet to play as good as they can (although they've been slowly improving), and still managed to hold on to 3rd in the division. Larkin does make this team better yes, but he also isn't our best player. Will he be in time? Very likely. But not yet. Also, no one player is gonna have a team go from playoffs to the basement. This isn't basketball.

Don't get me wrong. I am all for Larkin being our next captain. But it is a roll he has to grow into and have the touch passed to him when the time is right. That time will come down the road.

I will refrain from name calling but you definitely missed the dead things era if you think this is remotely close to that.

Stripping Z of the C and giving it to Larkin after 20 games as a Wing, regardless of how he's played or his potential would be much worse than the time the Canucks made Luongo captain. Why do threads like this even exist? Absolutely ridiculous, even for LGW.Even if Z was ever stripped of the C now, it would go to other guys before Larkin. The captaincy is earned in Detroit. Yzerman got it early, but that was when they were starting a rebuild centred around him after the long "dead things" era and in search of a new identity. This period is nothing like that.

Captaincy in hockey is by far the most over-hyped, over-analyzed aspect of any sport. Whatever is in that bowl that I'm afraid to touch in the back of my refrigerator could be the captain and it wouldn't make any difference. Leadership makes a leader, not a letter on your chest. Larkin's play is already making him a leader. If he's similarly good off the ice, he's already becoming a leader there too. Whether he gets a letter tomorrow or in 5 years or never gets one, if he's really a leader, he will lead.

Zetterberg is no longer the heart and soul of the team? What games have you been watching? Zetterberg has played amazing so far and he and Larkin have both been our best players.

Giving Larkin the captaincy would be a wrong move for both Larkin and Z. Kid doesn't need that pressure. Legitimate or otherwise.

Zetterberg's resurgence is in large part due to Larkin. When Larkin plays with Tatar and Nyquist/Sheahan, that line heats up and Zetterberg cools down. Its easy to see.

All a letter on the chest means, these guys are the ones talking to a ref. If someone is a leader he will lead and won't need a letter on his chest to do that.

But I think the next captain will be Danny D. with Larkin getting an A and Nyquist getting the other one

Don't forget Abby. That cradle-to-grave contract indicates the team believes he is essential to the team's future success.

I mean, he kind of is.

Last year when we were on a tear without datsyuk and then when abs went down the team looked deflated. He's more vital to the success of the team than most would ever give him credit for. That and he's going to be expected to bridge the gap between the greatness of the legends with the kids. Which is important.
