toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted November 28, 2015 So, I'm impatient and normally can't wait through commercials, so I flip to other games. While watching the Oilers and Wings tonight, I flip to the Pens and Jackets game and for the 30 seconds I watched, caught the craziest call. Malkin is standing there, one hand on his stick, blade laying on the ice and a Jackets player hacks at him over the arm/stick and breaks his (the Jacket's) stick.....you guessed it, Malkin gets called for slashing. So, at first I think, crazy, funny....but then I get a bit angry. The ref clearly did not see what happened (I'm assuming, because if he did and made that call, I'd have a bigger problem). So, assuming he didn't see it, what the hell is he doing making a penalty call on a play that he didn't see? I can understand making mistakes when you see something from the wrong angle, etc., but there is no way he could have even seen any bit of it.
SDavis35 140 Report post Posted November 28, 2015 Hope a video shows up for that one. Almost as bad as that "goalie interference" call from last year.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted November 28, 2015 I haven't seen it so I guess I shouldn't even comment, but it does make you wonder how many calls, correct or otherwise, are called based on assumption and not on actually observation. I wonder how many calls that would be called normally would go missed if no assumptions were made. To be clear I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I'm just interested in the thought experiment. jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted November 28, 2015 Also, from the same game. Brandon Dubinsky breaks his stick cross checking Crosby in the back of the head/kneck. Crosby left the game, haven't heard if he'll be back or not. For obvious reasons, I don't like Crosby, but this is absolutely disgusting on the part of Dubinsky. Malkin also fought Jack Johnson. That looked like it could've been ugly, especially with his concussion history. Dubinsky only got two minutes for it, think he'll get suspended or fined? Not only did he purposefully cross check him in the back of the neck, he also interfered with him in the corner, and he continues with another cross when he's on the ground (and may have also lightly kicked him). To me, that's just unsportsmanlike disregard or disrespect for another player's wellbeing. He obviously thought Crosby went down too easily, but that was a pretty forceful crosscheck and dangerous. 1 jimmyemeryhunter reacted to this

So I'll just say I'll be disappointed if they don't suspend him. A $2,000 fine is nothing to these guys and doesn't discourage it at all. Edit: DoPS announced that Brandon Dubinsky will have a hearing tomorrow for it. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/should-brandon-dubinsky-be-suspended-for-cross-check-on-sidney-crosby/ Edited November 28, 2015 by jimmyemeryhunter

With everything we know now in terms of concussions and CTE, head and neck shots need to be zero tolerance.

With everything we know now in terms of concussions and CTE, head and neck shots need to be zero tolerance.I feel the same way.He does have a hearing tomorrow, so we'll see what comes of it, but if they ever have an epidemic with tragedy related to cte/concussions like the NFL has been dealing with they're going to change real quick. Also, on the NFL concussion/CTE topic, I keep seeing stuff about that concussion movie with will smith that says it's scathing towards the NFL. I hope it brings more awareness/outrage to where the NHL will feel some heat to crack down on these types of things before anymore tragic happenings occur. Shanny seemed like he was doing a terrible job as the head of the DoPS, but compared to this guy he was damn near perfect.
