Since the shootouts nor the 3 on 3 overtimes seem to please everyone.

They should just go to 5 on 5 overtime periods sudden death until someone scores. Just like during the playoffs

That might please everyone.

The only risk is that over the course of 82 games and 15-20 hockey season , a player might actually die of a massive heart attack.

I don't think there's a realistic way to please everyone, so I'm ok with the 3 on 3 because it's at least fun, I'd just prefer ties.

Kinda how I see it too. Except I don't like the idea of teams playing for ties (or shootouts) and just trapping up the neutral zone and dumping the puck for the last portion of the game. Besides being exciting to watch, 3 on 3 makes it really difficult to play for a tie/shootout. I also like that there's still a hockey game to be played, unlike the shootout. Faceoffs still matter. Being a strong skater matters. Being a good passer or playmaker matters. Rebound control matters. Timely line-changes matter. Deciding whether to pinch or not matters. So I think 3 on 3 is a good balance between preserving the integrity of the game (something the shootout fails to do) and promoting offense and not playing lock-down defense for a guaranteed split of points (something the tie system fails to do). Maybe over time my view will change once the novelty wears off, but right now I think it's a good system.

Imo 3 on 3 is still better than shootouts which largely depends on whether or not you have good shooters. I'd rather them play actual hockey (be it 3 or 4 or 5 players each side on ice).

Haven't you guys ever played a pickup game with just 6 or 8 guys? It's still hockey. We all did it at some point.

Definitely, I think it's an improvement over the shootout, and certainly more entertaining as there's intensity. Sometimes I think overtime should first go to four on four, then end in a tie, but with no points awarded.

Our stars are 35+. You want them shooting out, not getting heart attacks.

I played a pickup game Friday night, 4v4. Was about to again today around noon but it was too hot, the ice wasn't skateable. Next pickup Tuesday, weather permitting.

a 5 minute 3 on 3 with at most 3 MAYBE 4 shifts that probably last 40 seconds each won't give a 35+ year old a heart attack. What are they 60 or 70 years old?

You do realize 35 is a pretty young age right? Zetterberg JUST had his first new born.. Lol. To put it into perspective.

It's like not even close to middle age.

What would kill players is what I suggested earlier with sarcasm. Doing 5 on 5 overtime sudden death like they do in the playoffs. Now that actually could kill a player over the couse of in an 82 game season for 15-20 years of his life. Simply because 5 on 5 shifts are longer, and there's more than just 3 shifts. You looking at another 10+ shifts per OT period.

And a shootout to me isn't real hockey rather than a skills competition. I'd rather have an OT before it gets to a skills competition.

A 5 min overtime with 3 shifts (40 second each) won't kill ya. Especially since on a 3 on 3 , someone ends up scoring at some point. Worst case scenario they don't score. At which point they go to S/O. But that's a rarity for the Wings now anyway.

The night Ellis had was one of the most gutless things I've seen. First he tries to spray water on the ref, when he's not looking, then drills Helm from behind into the boards, when he's not looking. Ellis was lucky Helm didn't turn around and punch him after he got up. I probably would have broken Ellis's jaw with my right hand! Weber probably taught Ellis how to act like that.

I keep saying how gutless Canadian athletes are, and that they're crybabies, well they continue to prove me right. I hope Nashville misses the playoffs by 1 point.

Also if we're worried about 35+ year olds on 3 on 3, honestly might be better to sit them a bit.

Most of our goals scored on OT have been by our young guys anyway. Except Kronwall. But he plays defense anyway and his longevity is pretty good.

Yeah, Jagr's comment was a joke. Older guys can handle 3-on-3.

He was definitely being a bit facetious, but in his defense, he was referring to the all-star game, which is going to be played at 3-on-3 in its entirety, which I can see being exhaustive (and will likely result in a very bad on-ice product).

I hate ties. Why would any one like a tie? Nobody wins, nobody loses, doesn't mean a damn thing.

Ties won't come back to this league.

People want results now. Playing 60 minutes straight of a brutal sport and having nothing to show for it (win or a loss) annoyed the heck out of a lot of people.

Also, ties are not good for the NHL from a marketing standpoint either.

where is that Bill guy anyhow, interested in his take on the PK he said would be great without Miller...oh well.

To Bill's credit, he doesn't seem like a guy who only shows up when he can prove his point. (like that Simon guy)

If so, wouldn't he be harping about how Smith was in the game and we won?! ...and to Smith's credit, he's been putting together some pretty good play of late.

Sure its exciting, but its still bogus hockey

DEATH TO FALSE HOCKEY!

... a player might actually die of a massive heart attack.

DEATH BY REAL HOCKEY!

Our stars are 35+. You want them shooting out, not getting heart attacks.

DEATH BY BOREDOM!

I'm going to attribute the 3 pp goals against to nobody wanted to stand in front of Weber's 110 mph slap shots. I expect them to be better tomorrow.

Miller would have. ;)

To the game: I was able to DVR the replay from FSD. Pretty complete game by the boys. That fourth line is plain U-G-L-Y and the PK as mentioned previously wasn't great. Nobody willing to go down in front those Weber bombs. Mrazek didn't have the best of games, but all in all, the skaters in front of him looked to have their s*** together and things were clicking well. Good to see us get another come from behind point and then to finish it off in OT.

Also, seeing Ellis in the box after that nasty/unnecessary hit on Helm and have it lead to the tying goal was so gratifying. As mentioned above, he was really pushing it. I get that the hit was up high and Ellis didn't like it, but Helm was rightfully penalized. I really think Ellis should have gotten a bench minor for unsportsmanlike for complaining/water squirting. You let the league deal out the further punishment if necessary...

Hopefully in the next meeting vs the Preds they simply give him zero time and space to get that shot off. Force him to make a play every time he gets the puck.
