I'm pretty optimistic based on what those who actually watch the Griffs have been reporting. Richdg 267 Report post Posted December 24, 2015 Well said, Rich. Mantha in some ways is a victim of the hype machine. I'm pretty optimistic based on what those who actually watch the Griffs have been reporting. Hype is always an issue. Many fans always assume the next prospect is a HOF player. That they should be a HOF player from day 1. Most good to great players in every sport are built over time. Yes all have natural God given talent, but it takes time to mold that talent into something special. Time in the weightroom, skill training, maturity, emotional/mental toughness are things that are developed. Everyone does this at a different pace which far to often fans have no patience for. 2 TheXym and krsmith17 reacted to this

Well said. Jurco at 22 and Mantha at 20. Both guys are gaining muscle and becoming better all around players. I'm not saying the Wings can wait til they are 30, but criticizing Mantha right now is absurd. He's doing fine. Real well, in fact. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

Yes the difference in rounds drafted comes into play. Point is we have several very good young F prospects that are developing and some will be stars. The waiting for that to happen is what is hard to do.....

The over-hyping of Mantha certainly played a part in the criticism, which is why we should be tempering ourselves rather than starting threads re-hyping him and saying he's dominating after a handful of good games. You're basically saying he's going to be the next Wings star when he's not even a star in the AHL yet. He's playing well recently, which is great. I'm sure we all hope that continues. But maybe you need some patience. Mantha (and Svechnikov!) on the Wings top line in a couple years? He hasn't even proven that he deserves to be on the team at all yet. All you're doing is setting the kid up for more criticism if he doesn't become a star right away. Go ahead and praise him for his good play lately, just ease back on the hype. This thread probably doesn't deserve to be outside the Griffins/prospect section. Should at least wait until he's actually dominating the AHL for a prolonged period. I'm geeked on Mantha. I'm also geeked on big svech, lil svech, Athanasiou, Nosek, and Russo. These guys are killing it!!!
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted December 25, 2015 Buppy, I do agree that he is getting overhyped, possibly even as much as he was right after being drafted and again after his final year of junior. However, make no mistake, he has been one of the Griffins best players pretty much all season, it's just that the points are only now starting to come the way they should have been since the beginning of the season. Still though, he has a ways to go before you can say that he's "dominating" the AHL...
