Adam Oates being brought in to help PP

#RedWings have brought Adam Oates in to work with their team for the next three days.

Blashill on Oates: "I love picking guys' brains. I hope Adam Oates can help me become a way better coach.”

Is Oates not coaching anywhere?

I love that Blashill is willing to look outside the organization for help. One of the things that I liked about Babcock was that he accumulated contacts throughout the league, and throughout other leagues, so he had plenty of minds to pick when necessary. Seems like that rubbed off on Blash.

Oates is working as a "skills" coach, with individual players such as Stamkos, Parise and Purcell to name a few. After leaving NJ, he opened his own business and has individual clients where he watches their game shifts and advises them on individual aspects of their game. In the off season he meets with them and works on the ice with many of his clients. He was hired by the wings for a three day period to, like Blash said, Pick his brain. I believe this is the first time he has worked with any one team in any capacity since leaving NJ. Should be a good opportunity for Blash and the coaching staff to learn some things.

improve the PP by acquiring the correct net front presence, I ike Abby, but he is not a PP specialist....AND SHOOT THE FRICKIN PUCK! Stop with the fancy pussyfoot passing! 9 times out of 10 Kronwall passes the puck even when he has time to lean into a one time slapper! Stop being so fancy, go back to basics! Shoot hard and shoot often! Pummel the net! You got Mike Green with a rocket shot. shoot it! A huge net front presence, and put a guy in the slot on opposite sides of the puck....shoot it! The main problem is not shooting and looking for that perfect play. Sure it looks beautiful when it works 10% of the time, but the other 90% its just one too many passess....BLAST THE PUCK! Even in front of the net, you're always told that when you shoot it, try to drive it through the back of the net, stop with the soft little taps at the puck!

Simple....I'd teach them for half the cash Oatsie is getting! But its nice to see him (kind of)back within the organization.

Who's the assistant that runs our PP. Is it Granato or Ferschweiler? If Oates gets the PP going, will there be a pink slip delivered for Christmas?

PP is ran by Ferschweiler I'm pretty sure. And I don't think Oates would get hired - he runs his own individualized "skills coaching" business now it looks like.

I think if they hired him our PP would guaranteed be one of the best in the league. He ran the PP really well for 2 years with the caps (ranked 1 and 2 the following year). Caps PP wasnt good before he came in and he helped turn it around basically. But again, I don't think he'll be a coach here.

Thanks for the info. Ddin't know that. That counts out my speculation that it could put an assitant's job in jeopardy.

I looked for the button to LOVE this post but couldn't find it. You my friend are 100000% correct. Much less ticky tacky crap for a while and dig into some old school blast at the net and muck the puck hockey.... Get ugly

Consultant ... doing something like this sounds like a page out of Babcock's book.

Blashill should add another page from Babcock's book and start calling and talking to Todd Nelson a few times a week to pick his brain. It took him a good dozen games to figure out how to coach at the AHL level but he's now done that and is crushing it.... Blashill needs to do the same and maybe Oates + Nelson can help him figure out how to coach at the NHL level

I happen to think Blash is doing quite well for his rookie campaign. Its not like he stepped into a situation where he had superstars coming out of his ears (like our former coach did) and he is still near the top of the division. I am way more happy with the way he handles his lines than our former coach did (with the exception of Helm, but that's another subject.) I love the fact that he plays his most deserving players and doesn't have to ideology that the vets win the spot over the kids. He doesn't seem too interested in purposely s***canning a players career for personal reasons like our former coach, and already tries to seek help and advice from all avenues and shows a willingness to learn more rather than having things his way or they highway. (of course that philosophy worked well for Bowman, but then again, there is only one Bowman.)

IMO, if he'd let Blash, I'd pick Larionov's brain as much as I could in order to get this offense a little more consistant.
