Naming The New Arena Suggestion

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

As a "Newbie" to the community and a fellow "Wing-Nut" (believe it or not, there are a few of us in Toronto ;)), I'm asking all hockey people and people of influence in the Detroit area to contact Olympia Entertainment and urge them to reconsider the name of the new home of the Wings. As everybody knows, the current home of the team bears the name of a man who moved to Detroit and became a global sports legend-Joe Louis. This tradition should continue by naming the new arena:

"THE GORDIE HOWE OLYMPIA"

...thereby honouring both "Mr. Hockey" and the place where he helped to make Detroit "Hockey Town U.S.A.". In addition to Olympia Entertainment (contact through the Wings' website), I've sent e-mails to every NHL team as well as Mayor Duggan and Detroit personality Mitch Albom. Don't confuse "Olympia Entertainment" (Wings owner) with "Olympia Management" (Nevada real estate company).

Many of you may be aware that they're building a new international bridge between Windsor and Detroit that will bear Gordie's name, but there's no law that restricts naming rights to only one structure, besides, the new arena is much more meaningful.

Olympia Entertainment would also get their name incorporated into the building, but that's a minor issue...

Thanks,

Jim

Wait, I'm confused...

Did they announce the options they're considering for the name of the new arena, or are you saying we should recommend they consider this as the name? I know they announced the sponsors for the new arena, but I haven't heard anything about them leaning towards a certain name.

Also, welcometc to letsgowings.Com, Jim.

Well, I am sticking with my two original names:

For my choice of honoring someone from Hockeytown:

The Ilitch Centre for Entertainment Arena nick named the I.C.E. Area ©

Then my corporate choice:

The Cadillac Centre © of course this could also be used as an honor to Cadillac the founder of Detroit.

The Brett.

I miss #22.

How about Miller Arena? The Beer of course!

First off welcome to LGW Jim! Man so many all-time-greats deserving to have the arena named after them.

The obvious would be the Mike Illitch Plaza

The Gordie Howe arena, Yzerman shrine, Lidstrom gardens.

I just hope they aren't screwing this up but naming it something like (sponsor) Arena.

Pushor Palace

Cleary's Clubhouse (or you could call the press box that). :)

Samuelsson's Shed

Snepts' Slaughterhouse

Kocur's Crib

Zetterberg's Ziggurat

I'm done, too much revelry this evening.

If they don't have a suite named Clearys clubhouse I'm going to be disappointed.

That would be incredible.
