I'm not a good Canadian, I find it more entertaining when Canada loses. It makes for much better sports talk radio

Most level headed Canadians knew this team wasn't very good. Next year they will be a lot better but the year after that doesn't look too good right now.

What a game, feel bad for Soderstrom that guy put on a show. The finish top line really is something else but they got a bit lucky in this game could have gone either way.

The atmosphere at those WJC games is also better than the suit dominated quiet NHL atmosphere but boy that Englund penalty was a tough call. Refs didn't need to call that but sadly this is european style and a big reason why european hockey isn't as physical as it could be.

Both Sweden and Finland aren't huge countries but the amount of talent they produce is just outstanding and never fails to amaze me year after year.

I know I'm likely in the minority here but I'm still not very high on Saarijarvi. He's a good puck moving defenseman but I'm not sure he will ever be able to hack it in the NHL. He really hasn't impressed me a whole lot in this tournament. Like Hicketts, he lacks a ton of size, especially for a defenseman. However, I think "Jumbo Joe" has a better shot at making the Wings some day than "Mini Vili". Hicketts just plays a lot bigger in my opinion, and he never shys away from the physical play. He always goes into the corners against bigger players and more often than not comes away with the puck. He is very strong for his size.

Svechnikov hasn't exactly ripped up the tournament either, but I think he has played really well despite not having a single point. He's still the non-pro prospect that I'm most excited about. Holmstrom had a really good tournament too but I think Svech is the better player with a much higher ceiling. I hope he gets himself a couple points in the gold medal game today.

Non Red Wings related - Puljujarvi is unreal, 15 points in 6 games so far. He'll go top 3 for sure.

Why does/should it amaze you? Canada, Finland, and Sweden are all relatively affluent nations at the correct latitudes to produce good hockey players. It should amaze you if those countries were consistently producing good surfers. You should really EXPECT good hockey players to come out of Scandanavia.

No surprise to me that these wj games and other national tournaments often feature Sweden and Finland.

Sarijaarvii has a very high hockey IQ and awareness which makes it possible to make a career even though he's small (surprised at his size in the tourney, didn't look that small) he reminds me of Brian Rafalski

Hicketts is small and low skill who uses a physical element to his game. Hard to transfer that against huge men in the NHL. Ah yes but the intangibles
