The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

I'm not sweating any of these picks. Over the last couple of years I've found myself saying "Who's Tyler Bertuzzi", "Who's Axel Holmstrom", "Who's Ville Saarijarvi"?

Fast forward one year.

They're all studs in their respective leagues. If nothing else, we draft really well.

:hysterical:

Can't wait Mick to say Alfons & Gasteon now! I got it you take it....oh wait another wasted pick that won't make the NHL....come on July 1!

Do you have a list of people from the 4th round that are going to make the NHL? If so please divulge the information to us.

This is a bad draft for the RW's. True none of us know how any player is going to turn out, neither do the RW's. Every draft in every sport is nothing more than an educated guess. When a team passes over guys ranked in the top 20 for a guy ranked in the mid 30's those are not educated guesses. It isn't about player A or player B or player C. it is about being smart and getting player A AND player B AND player C. 5-6 years from now Cholowski could become a good player. While we are waiting for that how many 20 goal seasons will Gauthier have? How about Jones? Rustabov? Some of the others available when we picked will have 200+ NHL games played before Cholowski ever plays a pro game.

I get that but when I start reading "why draft a tiny defensemen" "what a waste of the pick we got from Arizona" "all 3 draft picks suck"

Meanwhile I'm pretty sure Holland has a clue, more than any of us. Scouts is also not a guessing game, they actually watch the players play, do you watch these kids play and know how to evaluate talent ? Don't think so.

It is a guessing game for the most part , not every player they draft becomes an NHL player just because they watched them play hockey games

Some players develop at a later rate and turn out to be steal picks and some great junior players become busts

Luck plays a big part in drafting

The swede dman we picked just turned 18 at least so he's got time to develop , the pick right after from the preds is an 18 yr old in July with better offensive numbers , let's just hope he's not the one we should of picked since we all know how great Nashville are at getting d's

Great Otto koivula just went to the islanders ... Oh well

Ok, it was still an obscure pick.... the last two though...SHEESH! Cannot wait to see 5th-7th!

Detroit Red Wings select Hok Ptew!

163 lbs, but who's counting anyway.

Just going by what it says when I google his name, it says 150.

Givani Smith certainly would not have been available in the 5th-7th rounds... I really like that pick a lot.

I know right. People around here ***** and moan for YEARS about how we never draft any tough, gritty, abrasive forwards. So we draft an 18 year old who's 6'2, 200+ lbs., leads his league in penalty minutes, and is big and tough.

What do people do?

***** and moan.

Your not understanding my initial point.

Who knows more about these players? Holland and co or you and I.

We all know the answer.

Just going by eliteprospects.com, it says 150.

No.

Giovani Smith (6'2 205 lbs) would have been gone by round 3 at the latest.

Filip Hronek (6 foot 163 lbs) was ranked 49 TSN and we picked him up at 53. He also would have been gone.

Malmstrom wasn't ranked by any scouting services and there's little info on him , hakan Anderson found him in junior leagues so let's be hopeful it's another hakan home run

Fair enough ... Doesn't mean though every pick is right (I wish they were) and just because I'm some loser at home who happens to like someone and hope we draft that player , means that that said player will be a bust

But I get what your saying

C'mon Kenny Johnson...

Forward or dman? I know there's a Finnish forward makinen I had my eye on that wasn't drafted yet either

Some of the others available when we picked will have 200+ NHL games played before Cholowski ever plays a pro game.

And where are you pulling 5-6 years from? You have no clue. 4 years is probably the max, and possibly as few as 2 years depending on his development. Kids are coming straight from college more and more often. Larkin, Dekeyser came straight from college. Cholowski was the fastest rising prospect in this year's draft. He already has good size for an 18-year-old, and will add on within a year or two. You're off your rocker if you think Gauthier, Jones, or Rubtsov will jump right into the NHL. They'll more than likely need at least a season or two of development, maybe even 3. They're not locks to be anything above top 6 players.

"Kieffer Bellows is a pure shooter with question marks about the rest of his game. Max Jones is a nasty left winger with a size/speed combination and perhaps a 50-50 shot at either becoming a top-six power forward -- a better-skating version of the Scott Hartnell mold -- or else having a career as a role player somewhere in the range of the careers of former first-round picks Raffi Torres, Ben Eager or current Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson. A lot of NHL scouts soured on Julien Gauthier's game as the 2015-16 season progressed. Questions started to fly about his adaptability to the NHL despite being a good finisher with a huge frame and excellent strength (although not very consistent in applying it)."

A little intel on Jordan Sambrook:

Smooth-skating two-way defenceman who displays solid creativity and offensive instincts, as well as a strong defensive game. Can play lengthy shifts due to his conservative style without the puck, and can be relied upon in all situations. Mobile with and without the puck, and could even become a bit quicker. His size allows him to be physically assertive and protect the puck well. All-in-all, a defenceman who has the potential to become a well-rounded all-around player that can log a lot of ice-time.
