Joakim Andesson on Waivers

I wish Tangradi would get a 10-game stretch on the Wings' 4th line. Let's see what a big body with some snarl can do on this team.

I've never seen this guy play before. I looked at the AHL's website and it it says he is 9th in the league in goals with 16. Is he a Holmstom type scorer (ie. dirty goals)? Based on what I have read, I dont get the impression that he is a sniper.

Pretty much all of Tangradi's goals have come in the "dirty" variety, which is a good thing. They've mostly been crashing and banging in a rebound or a backdoor tap in on a pass from Mantha or Athanasiou. I don't think he will ever be a scorer in the NHL, but he does have a skill set, one that I think we could use on our 4th line. One thing I do wish though is that Nelson would use him more as a shut down penalty killer with the Griffins rather than top line power-play. If he ever has a shot at making the Wings, he would be a bottom 6 guy, now way he ever gets beyond that...

From everything I've seen of him, PK is the last thing he should be doing. He wants to score, not play defense.

Exactly my point Dickie... He'll never be a scorer at the NHL level, which is why he should concentrate on his defensive game in the AHL. If he ever were to get a call again, he could potentially stick as a 4th line, penalty killer, tough guy, but he would definitely need to improve his defensive game. He'll never become a top 6 goal scorer that drops the gloves like Milan Lucic. If he wants to make it in a permanent role in Detroit (I don't think he will), he would need to mold his game after a Cody McLeod or Chris Thorburn, a bottom 6, defensive minded guy that can kill penalties...

I just don't see it with Tangradi, to be honest. He's had opportunities with the Pens, Jets and Canadiens. I don't see him changing his game to suit a fourth-line role. He's one of those guys who produces (in the AHL) in a way that you'd wanna see him play on a third line, but he just doesn't have the timing/pace down. Think he's a career AHL'er, to be honest.

If anything, I see Tomas Nosek as a possible replacement for Miller next season, should the Wings elect to let Drew go.

I agree. I don't think Tangradi will be anything more than an emergency call up for us. He's a UFA after this season too, so he may try his luck with another organization again next season. I wouldn't mind keeping him down in Grand Rapids for depth though.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing what one of Nosek or Callahan can do in a 4th line role next season. I wouldn't mind seeing Miller re-signed, but I think I'm leaning more toward letting him walk...

For me, it depends on what happens with Helm. He's 29 years old - I think he'll want to cash in. I can't see him wanting to take less than 3M, which I don't think the Wings should pay him. I'd really prefer to see some young talent mixed in the top-nine with the more established players. Helm's a mediocre 2W, better than/overpaid for a 4W, but an ideal 3C (which is already set with Riley).

If I have to choose between paying Helm 3M and letting him bounce between the second and fourth lines, or Miller getting 1.5M and seeing some of the younger guys in the top-nine, I'd pick the latter. I know it's not that simple, but it's what I would prefer. The team's already overpaying a few guys. Helm runs the same risk, IMO.

Yeah, the Joakim Andersson thread has evolved into how we should remodel our 4th line now that that scrub has cleared waivers...

I've said it before, I'd rather Helm at $2.75M than Miller at $1.5M, but if Helm is asking more than $3M, I'd let him walk. I really want to keep him, I just wish he weren't forced into the top 6. He's not a top 6 player, but because he's been up there for a year or so, he'll expect to be paid like one...

Maybe it's just a trade move to have been putting Helm in the 2nd line, trying to showcase him a bit and raise his asking price. and gain some leverage. I don't really know, is his contract due this year? can the Wings trade him prior to re signing a contract? how does it work?

Yes his contract is up after this season and they can trade him at any point. If they don't have any intention in re-signing him, and they are trying to up his trade value, I guess that would explain his usage... I still don't like it, because I don't really think any other team would buy that Helm is a legit top 6 forward, and I don't see much in a return for him. I would have much rather see him used as a bottom 6 forward and pay him accordingly to retain him in the offseason...

If he was willing to do that, I think he would have made that adjustment already. Some guys think that no matter what, they can make it as a scorer and either refuse to believe any different or would rather play in a lower league as a top player than be a role player in the NHL. Michel Picard and Don MacLean come to mind, as does 95% of the older European players who come over and end up back in Europe after a couple years.

You must have missed the part where I said "on this team." I hadn't realized he had played 140 games with the Wings.

All-Star break

Didn't miss it at all. What about the Wings do you think is going to make him look any different than he has with any other team?

I don't *know* that he will look different but I would like to see if coaching, system, teammates, and basically being the only bigger guy on the team with actual toughness/grit make a difference. A 10-game look couldn't hurt.
