All Star Skills Competition

Epic all-star moment I'd like to see now that Larkin has the fastest skater record -

Phil Kessel is skating with the puck in the O-zone, Larkin strips him of the puck, goes back on a breakaway and buries it. Brent "Chewy" Burns is mic' d up - "He just did the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs!"

Good thing it's not the Phil Kessel run

In all honesty, people complaining about the fastest skater record do have a point....starting from the blue line is a significant difference. Not sure about the complaints about nets being moved up though....I think they were in the same spot. For the record, Gartner posted a 12.8 or 12.9 when starting from the blue line in 1994, but it didn't qualify because he started at the blue line.

I'm still confused. What was the point of having Larkin try to break Gartner's record? Is that a new thing they're going to do from now on? Did the East even get an extra point for that? Kind of strange.

And I still can't believe the winning side gets to pick when they want to play tomorrow. Of course they'd rather play first. Otherwise, they'd have to play back to back. What else was Jagr (or anybody else) going to pick?

Larkin also slipped and still beat it though. So imo the start from blue line was nullified. If he did a redo and started in the "right position" he'd still probably beat it as long as he doesn't slip.

Im just happy Larkin is having a great time out there. Kid is looking every bit as good we think he is!! Aside from him I honestly cannot enjoy the skills comp anymore, I have a 5 year old and love daughter BUT I believe there is a time and a place for kids skating on the ice and wearing chewie masks, the NHL allstar game should not be one of them. It looks more and more ridiculous every year, or maybe Im getting older and more crabby.

It's annoying that the parameters of the speed run have changed. That will always be the asterisk to this victory. It's almost better to have Larkin come in second all-time under the same scenario and with no guise of doubt to argue from.

Should we nullify hardest shot records now to because the sticks have flex? It's a skills competition record. It is meaningless fun.

Meh let the people complaining about Larkin complain. I'd rather him have the record regardless of the complaints.

Didn't people complain about Fedorov vs Gartner? I think Fedorov technically beat him but Gartner's stick was ahead (making him the eventual record holder). I was kind of young but I remember watching it.

People are confused, they are comparing Gartners record from a dead stop at center to the one were he started from the blue line and a running start. The announcer even said it before he even went for it. It is the fastest time ever posted for a lap around the rink and Larkin beat it. Simple as that

Ignore me haha, don't comment in the wee hours of the morning

Crashnburnluder.....not sure what you just said, but it appears that you are confused. The people complaining are suggesting that, while both times are for one lap around the rink, Gartner's lap started from a dead stop, while Larkin's started while already up to a good speed. I have no idea why the NHL would have allowed it to work that way (other than to artificially increase times or create buzz of a potential new record). Doesn't make a lot of sense for them to do that, but wouldn't put it past them (a way to make the All Star weekend more relevant again?). It's entirely possible as a lot of people only cared about the hardest shot recently...but would people have really cared about that either if everyone was hitting 95mph?

Hmmmmm, Larkin being chosen as a rookie to go to the ASG.....NHL "fixing" the skills competition (some say) in order for Larkin to make a new ASG record for speed...Larkin is getting tons of NHL talk amongst the insiders around the league....could it be possible that the NHL is making Dylan Larkin the next poster boy for the NHL? Could Dylan Larkin be the next player that everyone talks about? Could this kid be the one that the NHL is putting the next 10 years or so on his shoulders to carry the NHL? I guess we will see if he starts making appearances in every NHL Network commercial....

I'm confused, maybe someine can enlighten me because I only made it throught the 1st 45minutes or so. Were there 2 shoutouts? One silly one and one legit one? I saw the Chewy & Jagr impersonation one but not the one with The Kid Dylark.

Also, is Josi really suppose to be fast? Cause he was smoked!

Josi is fast and he's a dman. He finished in 14 seconds which is on pace with Taylor Hall. Larkin is just that quick.

Yep there were two different competitions involving shootouts. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=800324

The first was the Honda shootout challenge,in which fans vote for the best shootout gimmick. And the second, Discover NHL Shootout, which was divided into 3 sets of 6 skaters and 1 goalie (18 skaters and 3 goalies per conference) and had 2 minutes to take as many shootout attempts as they could. In which Larkin ended up 2-2

Well I did confuse my self, I confused the times.

Gartner had two separate skates. 1) where he started at the red line and posted a 13.3? And 2) where he started from the blue and posted a 12.9 but the NHL didn't count it as the record since it wasn't under the same format.

I confused the times thinking Larkin posted a 12.8 but I was thinking about his first race time.

Either way people will pull straws, mainly purists, but the NHL loves to be able to use the word record broken to cause excitement among new fans. I like the idea of skating the old style to see where they compare to the past.
