All Star Skills Competition

I can see where they're coming from about the record not being equal, but whatevs.

Maybe they were just trying to drum up more excitement about the all star game and this generation of players.

Seeing someone beat an all time record is exciting, but as long as they use they he same format/rules going forward it'll work out.

Also, I believe had he not slipped he would've beat the 12.9 that gartner put up when he got to start at the blue line to build up speed.

People come out of the woodwork with petty excuses and stipulations whenever any record is broken.

Remember the Wings' home win streak from, what was it, 2012? It seemed like new people appeared with new reasons why they didn't break the record or weren't going to or whatever with each passing day.

Hopefully we break the consecutive playoff appearances streak, wonder what people will say then.

"There were less teams back then so the teams were stacked so it was harder to make the playoffs"

Hmmmmm, Larkin being chosen as a rookie to go to the ASG.....NHL "fixing" the skills competition (some say) in order for Larkin to make a new ASG record for speed...Larkin is getting tons of NHL talk amongst the insiders around the league....could it be possible that the NHL is making Dylan Larkin the next poster boy for the NHL? Could Dylan Larkin be the next player that everyone talks about? Could this kid be the one that the NHL is putting the next 10 years or so on his shoulders to carry the NHL? I guess we will see if he starts making appearances in every NHL Network commercial....

Or wins the Calder?

Pretty sure that won't be a legit argument. More like the other way around.

You do have to look at records in context, though. Nothing wrong with that. A few years ago, Brodeur broke Parent's streak of 47 wins in a season. However, back then, there were no overtimes, let alone shootouts. Are you going to tell me there shouldn't be somewhat of an asterisk next to that?

Dylan just seems to fit that mold!

I saw an interview with Larkin the other day and it was regarding (mostly) about a visit to the locker room by Ted Lindsay. They asked him (Larkin) what the feeling of a player like Lindsay coming in and such-one of the things he said was that "he doesn't want to take a back seat to anyone" and I thought that said a lot about how he feels about his game.

I know but people will find a way to make that an argument.

Anyone think Helm could beat Larkin's new record?

I think it would be close.

Now that Larkin holds the record though, I could see them racing in practice at some point. (Hopefully they do, and hopefully they record it and put it on a new episode of wingspan, or show it during pre-game)

Probably.

one thing i never understood about that event is you had the fastest skater competition but a couple of the fastest skaters in the NHL can't go because they are not "All-Stars" so the statistics really don't mean too much from that standpoint.

Wonder if Helm still has his peak speed like he did. If so I'd say front to back Helm would beat Larkin. But in terms of lap race I just feel like Helm would be too damn fast to keep himself from slipping.

I've been watching some past ASG fastest skater competition, and even when Fedorov faced him, Gartner slipped a bit defeated Fedorov. So at those speeds it get's harder to make those tight turns. Just look at how the rinks for speed skating are designed and you'll notice a flaw on the NHL speed contest. If they had a bit more ice to make the turn they could built up greater speed, since most of them don't push when approaching it and just glide with the momentum they've build up...if that makes any sense.

Yeah. Ofcourse it's not an official speed skating contest and rather a hockey fastest skating comp. The ability to handle the obstacles (tight rink, hockeystick in your hand, sharp turn, and curved skates rather than flat ones) and do it fast is what it's about.
