When you're trading for any rental, you've gotta wonder whether or not that's the missing piece that'll take us to the cup. I think we're more than a d-man away from winning the cup. Yes, he fills our 1D spot we so desperately need, but right now we're having some serious scoring issues as well.

Something that I worry about is this: we're in a good position to make the playoffs, but is there a single team in the East that's scared of us? Who sees us as an unfavourable match-up?

FYI if Dustin Byfuglien was on our team right now ... Mr. Fatty would be third in points behind Larkin and Z. A bit embarassing that a fat guy is outscoring our small skilled forwards while playing defense! He also has more goals than everyone on our team except Larkin. It's hilarious.

Not to dump on our hopes for Buff to come to Detroit but:

  • Gary Lawless: If the Jets are able to re-sign Dustin Byfuglien to a deal with a salary cap hit over $7 million, they may have to find some cost certainty elsewhere on their blueline. It might make a Jacob Trouba for Travis Hamonic trade plausible.

Word is that the Jets have broken off talks with Ladd and been talking with Byfuglien to try and work out a deal.

Swapping out Trouba for Hamonic would probably be an easy decision for both the Isles and Jets.

They'd still be super deep on the blueline.

1-4: Enstrom, Byfuglien, Myers, Hamonic. 5. 6. and 7: Stuart, Chiarot, and Postma

No. It would cost too much for a rental. And signing him to the kind of contract he will no doubt get would be great for 2 or 3 years, but then would become a cap nightmare. Let him become somebody else's mistake.

The only circumstance I'd like to see him as a Wing is one that will never happen. And that would be the same kind of deal Green signed with us.

I don't want to give up our future for the guy, but come on- he's almost exactly what we need. He's a top pairing d-man that can provide offense and a net front presence on the power play, which are the things we've lacked most since lidstrom and holmstrom retired. If we have the cap space to re-sign him, even if it's for a couple years too many, I'd do it. A first, a second, and a prospect isn't much to give up for that... we have more mediocre defense prospects and good forward prospects than we have available roster space for going forward, and datsyuk is gone after next year.

The issue with him is that he apparently wants a lot of money and a lot of years and is at an age where he's going to be slowing down sooner rather than later. He'd probably be worth it for about 3 years, +/- 1, then be steadily more and more of a drag. If they could get him just as a rental for not that much, go for it, but there are probably other teams that would give more.

I'm not going to say that giving up a 1st, 2nd and a prospect is "giving up our future", but it definitely sets us back, especially considering there is absolutely no guarantee we would be able to re-sign him. Chances are, Byfuglien would want to test the market, especially considering he would be one of the top defenceman available this summer. We would have to massively overpay to keep him, and he's not a guy I want to overpay, especially on term, which he would be looking for for sure. So we give up those assets for a couple months of Byfuglien, in a year when we're not one player away from being a legit Cup contender...

We need to stay the course, and continue to build this team. We should be looking to trade for a top pairing defenceman, but Byfuglien is not that guy in my opinion. We need someone that is still relatively young, has term remaining on his contract, and someone that we'd be able to lock up long term. If we're calling Winnipeg, it should be to see if we can make some sort of deal for Trouba. Now that is a player you could overpay for. Imagine a top pairing of DeKeyser - Trouba going forward, that is a legit top pair, something we haven't seen in Detroit in quite some time...

I am all for trying to acquire him, I am also ok with giving him $7m+ per season. If the market dictats that the likes of Q and Ericsson are "deals" at $4M, then $7Mish is quite a deal for Byfuglien.

I've also mentioned that he would not only fill our need for a top pairing guy, but you could also put him in Abby's place on the PP in front of the net....who's gonna move that big guy out of the way without taking a penalty!?! Who's going to see thru him to stop a point shot!

I say go large on trying to trade for him, outbid a team if you must, and yes, pay him $7M+ for 5-6 years...

I also believe that Holland will NOT acquire him if he is only to be a rental. Holland doesn't need rentals, he needs a top pairing guy to sign long term and run the D for the rest of his career. I say either negotiate with him thru WPG, to either do a sign and trade, or have a deal in place as soon as he is acquired....is the latter illegal? Maybe, but the point is, know up front what he is looking for and be ready to offer him something that's not insulting the minute he gets here.

If their asking price is initially a prospect, 1st and 2nd, then they should accept Helm, Sproul (or XO) and a 1st. If they wanted an experience NHL D-man in return, throw in Q or E (ya, I know) and drop the 1st down to a 2nd...I'd pay that ONLY and ONLY with the sign and trade, or a deal almost ready to go when he gets here. I do think Byfuglien would be the #1 guy here for the rest of his career, but in the same thought, I DO NOT want him just for a rental...like many have said, we are not a rental away from the Cup.

The contract he gets will be 4 or 5 years to many, not a couple. People complain about some of the contracts on this team now. Just wait until you see what the opinion is on Buff's contract to be come 2020.

Exactly the team will regret this contract in no time, but hey if some team wants to offer him 7x7 go for it. Maybe Trouba becomes available that way because the Jets by all indications are run like a budget team by Chipman.

Hmmm. Lets see. ;)

...and maybe now Trouba heads to the Isle and Hamonic heads to the Peg. So they can keep within that budget...
