9 (NINE!) player trade involving Phanuef

Could be. Or, he could be a really good player that hasn't had enough talent around him to win, and therefore gets zero recognition for being great. Stevie Y was almost traded to Ottowa in 1995 as some of the Detroit brass thought he wasn't a winner. Great player, just not a winner. Story has it that deal was almost done for us to get Yashin for Stevie...straight up. Mr. and Mrs. "I" are to have said to have stepped in and squashed the deal. It wasn't until we got Stevie supporting talent around him that we started winning, and he was finally recognized as an elite player and leader. Without the Russians, Shanny, etc...Stevie could have had the same label put on him as Phaneuf currently has on him. Matts Sundin and a few other above average players aren't exactly a great supporting cast over the years...as of late that includes Kessel, Lupul, JVR, etc...are good, but their not Fedorov, Lids, Shanny, Vladdy, Igor, Murphy, etc....

No comparison. Yzerman was an amazing offensive force in his prime, even without championships. If he retires in 1995, you could even make a HHOF case for Yzerman. Can't do that for Phaneuf.

My post wasn't about championships but about how he hasn't lived up to expectations since his younger days in Calgary.

So, he was close, just missing Edmonton, Senators, Canadiens, and Leafs.

I still wonder if anyone has hit all seven in a career. (modern area, obviously)

As mentioned, I live near Buffalo and Toronto, so I listen to a lot of Buffalo radio, AM 550. Today they were talking about some Bob McKenzie comments about Stamkos to the Sabres. The Sabres have pieces in place (imagine him and Eichel on the same line?), and it's only an hour and a half drive to Toronto, so he can go home and visit.

Interesting. Makes sense to me.

I'm not sure if they play in Toronto at the end of their careers or If playing in Toronto ended their careers. It's a toss up.

Good one! As you can tell I have no respect for the Leafs organization. I have a number of friends who are Leaf fans, and all ownership has done is screw their fans over.

I second that. Yzerman had his best offensive years in the late 80's to early 90's with line mates like Gallant, Probert, Burr, and Ysebaert. Nothing against those guys, but they weren't the same skill level as Shanahan, Hull, Kozlov, Fedorov.

You're not wrong, but that also has a lot to do with overall scoring dropping. In 1985 avg goals per game were 7.94. In 1990 avg gpg were 6.91, in 1997 avg gpg were 5.28, which is a pretty big drop.

As I was recently told on twitter, I'm just butting in, but if Yzerman hadn't been "offensive" in the late 90's and early millenial then the Wings wouldn't have needed that C in their last 3 cups and that 19 wouldn't be hanging on the rafters. Leadership isn't accounted in stats but engraved in fans' memory.

From what I understand - thousands of fans from Ontario make their way into Buffalo each night there's a home game.

Just think of the interest if Stamkos became a Sabre?

I know a few friends who've switched to the Sabres. Stamkos to the Sabres makes sense to me. They'd just have to figure out what to do with the cap in a few years.

Won't be that bad for them cap wise. E. Kane is signed for only two more years. Moulson for three.

Bogo and O'Reilly are the only players signed long term.
