captain2005 32 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 Hey guys, just touched down last night, first time in Detroit, here to see them smash the Aves. Any suggestions on good bars or restaurants to go to before or after a game? Really enjoying this city, everyone is so friendly, it's awesome. 1 NerveDamage reacted to this
amato 3,210 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 I don't go downtown a ton but in my experience, most of the bars have been good. Nemos is one of the few I've had food at.... Great burgers there. (1384 Michigan Ave) But if you're looking for the best food, my suggestion would be slows bbq. (2138 Michigan Ave) Obviously there are plenty more to choose from.. Hope you have a great time! Can also second that greektown is a good area for drinks and food.
NerveDamage 4,176 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) I've never been to Detroit, but check out Cheli's Chili Bar, it's owned by...drum roll... Chelios! http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g42139-d884597-Reviews-Cheli_s_Chili_Bar_Restaurant-Detroit_Michigan.html Edited February 12, 2016 by NerveDamage
BottleOfSmoke 5,965 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 If you like Greek food, then Greektown's a must. Nemo's for bar food/drinks, and you have to pick your favorite coney at either American or Lafayette. Slow's is great if you have a hankering for bbq, or Hockeytown cafe if you want the traditional Wings experience. A lot of places have shuttles to the Joe if you're eating/boozing there, or you could hop on the people mover. Stick to the main roads and well-lit areas and you won't have a problem. 1 amato reacted to this
Learn2LuvIt 245 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 IMO...best pre-game atmosphere is The Detroiter (bar and grill). It's located a half a block outside of Greektown (very, very easy to find and get to from Greektown). It's on Beaubien St. They have shuttle on 10-12 minute loop starting a few hours before and after game (although the after game the loop is more like 20 minutes due to traffic). Shuttle ride to game is usually a raucous ride, with Let's Go Red Wing chants and everyone very cool and into the game. Food there is nothing fancy. But it's quick, and pretty good. Many other places above are good as well as mentioned above. Have fun and welcome to Detroit. Go Wings!!
kipwinger 8,522 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 Sweetwater Tavern for the wings (chicken), Bucharest for the Shwarma, Atwater Brewery, Lafayette coney (f*** American), Southern Fires.
BottleOfSmoke 5,965 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 Bucharest for the Shwarma, Lafayette coney (f*** American) Their curly fries and hummus are tasty. And how dare you. 1 kipwinger reacted to this

Sounds like you know you way around Detroit. Now, if only you could make up your mind about which avatar to use..........
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 I agree about Slows for bbq, and Sweetwater for wings. Greektown is pretty cool too if that's what you're looking for. There's an awesome place called Punch Bowl Social that has darts, shuffle board, arcade games, bowling lanes, and a pretty cool atmosphere that I would also recommend. Another thing worth asking is how far are you willing to travel? Because midtown has a ton to offer these days but its not within walking distance to the Joe. LGW changed me back for some strange reason. I'll probably switch to AJ Styles in the coming days.

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted February 13, 2016 LGW changed me back for some strange reason. I'll probably switch to AJ Styles in the coming days. Same happened to me. While I've only been to Detroit several times for games - the 'Greektown' area has a good number of bars/restaurants that are fun to be before, and after the game. These bars offer shuttle buses to/from the Joe, and that area is also on the 'People Mover' rail system so you have options that can get you back, and forth. If ya got a sweet tooth - you must check out 'Astoria Pastry Shop' in the Greektown area. Have fun! How about strip clubs?
