And of course it's alot less then Ann Arbor.

Every outdoor game for the rest of history will probably be less than that. lol

It can expand up to 40,000.

At a potential capacity of 40,000, a Toronto Winter Classic game could have the third-smallest crowd in the nine-year history of the event. The 2010 game between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers at Boston’s history Fenway Park had an attendance of 38,112, the smallest in the event’s history. The Winter Classic at Chicago’s Wrigley Field between the Blackhawks and Red Wings had 40,818 in the stands.

I laugh when NFL to Toronto rumors start up every few years. Toronto doesn't have a proper venue for the NFL, they'd have to spend $1.5 Billion to build a new 80,000 seat Stadium. I guess Toronto should have an outdoor game though. 40,000 corporate fans will buy tickets for $2,000 each.

Agreed. It is really a novelty at this point and really? ANOTHER outdoor game for the Wings and Leafs?

This has everything to do with Toronto wanting some kind of NHL event for their anniversary.

They should be hosting the draft seeing how they most likely will be picking very high again.

Might be the only bright spot for their 100th anniversary.

Would be awesome if the NHL played a game at an outdoor pond somewhere in Saskatchewan. No fans. No arena. Just the middle of nowhere.

Obviously wouldn't happen money wise, but I'd watch it.

Next brilliant idea will be a game on the moon or desert. Why not have a year without the WC and then bring back with a new twist and fresh ideas, especially teams

Talk about a letdown. At least play it at Rogers, the capacity would be up.

Yea I'd play it at the Rogers Center. It's has more seats, and BMO Field isn't much of a venue. It's just a soccer stadium. Rogers Center would have a better back drop with the big scoreboard, the CN Tower above it, and the Windows Restaurant.

Question, why are there no seats or bleachers around the Rink in an outdoor game?. Maybe they could have that area as standing only, like in the good ol' days. Or something else to increase the maximum attendance.

There will never be an "outdoor" hockey game at the rogers centre cold weather snow and wind messes up the mechanics its too bad really

ROOF OPERATION GUIDELINES

While Rogers Centre strives to make the comfort of our guests a priority when it comes to the opening and/or closing of our roof, there are certain limitations and conditions we must adhere to prior to making a decision to do so -- the four main reasons being temperature, wind, rain and snow.

  • Temperature

The retractable roof operating system was designed to operate at or above temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius. Attempting to open or close the roof at temperatures below this mark could easily lead to mechanical failure. Additionally - the mechanical systems within the stadium are not winterized and, as such, opening or closing in temperatures that approach zero Celsius would likely result in major damage.

  • Wind

Wind is an important factor to consider when deciding to open or close the Rogers Centre roof. A wind speed approaching and/or exceeding 64 km/h, for example, would most certainly cause damage to the roof panels and possibly the rail system that holds them. Also -- depending on temperatures -- we might factor in the fact that any wind above 20 km/h would have a cooling effect on guests within the facility.

  • Rain

If the possibility of precipitation over Rogers Centre is 75% or greater - a decision is generally made to have the roof closed so as to keep our guests comfortable and dry.

  • Snow

An accumulation of snow on the retractable roof panels affects their movement - endangering the integrity of the panels themselves and placing strain on the equipment that rotates them. An effort to open or close the roof under these conditions would likely cause significant damage, and is therefore - not attempted.
