New Drafting Rule Proposal

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

The Edmonton Oiler Rule:

When any team drafts within the first 3 picks, they will automatically be placed 28, 29, 30 the following year, 25, 26, 27 the year after that, and finally 22, 23, 24 the year after that. After 3 years of ineligibility for lottery consideration, they can regain lottery consideration status.

Edmonton is an embarassment right now and should not be in the condition they are in after drafting 4 number 1s in the last 6 years. The league needs to put a stop to it and make it impossible for the league's top talent to circle the drain in an environment that isn't recovering. At what point does the NHL step in and say "You're done, Edmonton. Get better, or get out."?

Which means that there will be always NINE teams with lower picks each year, leading to scary situations when teams will be forced to pick 1,2,3 and then busted with 3yrs late picks. This is bad for medicore teams bellow the p-o line in long-term scope, as they will have one top pick and then for three years will be picking latest 1st round (which is in common quite weak position).

Should be enough to alter lottery percentage rules somehow with respect to last year results. There are teams which are for sure in rebuild process, they can´t be blamed just because of Oilers.

Someone on here came up with an idea where the best non playoff team gets the first overall pick, and the worst team gets the last pick of the teams that don't make the playoffs. I kind of like this as it gives every team a reason to play hard right until the end.

Though this idea may kill the trade deadline.

The other option, and IMO the most likely is just making the odds much worse for the worst team, and much better for the best non playoff team. Make it so the team who is in 17th place is only a few percentages below the team in 30th to get the #1 pick.

You could even just do a complete random pick of all non playoff teams (ie. 2005 draft when Pittsburgh drafted Crosby).

They have changed the percentages. Also, starting this year, they're raffling off the top three picks. I hope Toronto gets last and still has to pick fourth.. Serves them right.

The problem in Edmonton, imo, is that they still sell out games all the time. If they're still making money, there is less pressure to be good. Combine that with always drafting the same type of player and that's what you get. I do hope they start wising up and making some trades to get better, I like them, but time will tell..

I don't think you should punish the fans because of poor team management. They want their team to be good. They're promised a good team because they have all that talent. They suck because they're poorly managed and the team is not put together well.

On the other hand, it's pathetic that EDM has had all of these picks and can't get it together. Parity is all the rage in the league.

Some parity for the draft would be awesome. I love the idea of really taking #TANKIT out of the equation for getting a top pick.

I think all non-playoff teams should have an equal shot at picks #1 through #5.

after all these years of complaining about it, im still on my hope that #17 get first pick down to #30, then 16 down to 1st.

totally keeps tanking out of the equation.

yea, fans get shafted by mismanaged teams...but dont we all expect our high payroll players to produce?

shouldnt the high payroll fatcats suits produce too? if not...."your fired"

lets face it....larkin on a team filled with larkin's doesnt learn pointers from pav,hank,kron,richards...etc.

his ceiling would be about now...but we have the fortunate world of red wings nation to be excited that he has so much more to learn from the elders. on and off the ice.

so yea, edmonton....figure it out. its called drafting a star player...not winning a star player.

those poor kids parents...awww, son, your so good, you get banished in edmonton for 5 years where they can stunt your growth and burn your desire to win to the ground like a dumpster fire.

its like signing your first acting contract...on an MTV reality show. (or hallmark channel)

goodbye future career.
