Wings fans, I need your help -- Octopus etiquette

So, I am going to the game on Wednesday against the Flyers and my friend and I plan on throwing our first Octopi on the ice. I have researched for hours and think I have the proper etiquette down.

1. Boil for 30 minutes to get rid of the smell and to avoid it sticking to the ice.

2. I will have it in a plastic bag which I will then put in a big brown shipping envelope, which I will tuck in my belt/jeans with a baggy jersey over top,

3. Will throw one at the very end of the national anthem to get the fans and our boys pumped.

4. Will throw the other after a Wings goal. (Or maybe after a fight?)

I know the big no no is definitely do not disrupt the flow of the game. I.E. during play or before a face-off.

Although I feel like I have everything I need to know, what scares me is I still see stories and have seen videos of people getting kicked out by security and even ticketed. That's the last thing I want to happen. Does anybody have any experience with this? Or know anybody who has done it? I have a feeling it might be just the luck of the draw on what security personal is around you and if they're in a good mood that day. I sure as hell don't wanna get kicked out after the National Anthem. If anybody has any tips or advice I would love to hear from you! Thanks and GO WINGS.

Never done it but I've been to tons of games and never felt like the security to enter the Joe is that strict. They have metal detectors and have a "clear bag policy" but nothing over the top. But if you have it tucked in your jeans/shirt no way they should be able to see it. Just make sure you don't look unusually chubby in the front stomach/groin area. I'd imagine the Octopus are squishy enough to not be noticeable.

Your biggest dilemma might be when you actually throw the Octopus. If they saw you throw it - you're going to get kicked out and likely fined. There's a of security in the actual arena.

I appreciate the response. I know getting in is no problem and I'm not really worried about that. I'm more worried about after throwing it.....Here are some videos of people getting kicked out.

It looks like in both cases it was before a faceoff which may be the reason.

I've heard of people duct taping the bag to their lower leg and wearing baggy pants.

If you don't want to be escorted out afterwards, throw from a different section than your own and then run like hell. Doesn't hurt to have a jersey switch available and a hat to put on afterwards either

Who was it here that threw an epic one a couple seasons ago? We all saw it live and lost it. It was great!

They had us unzip our jackets today, which I have never had to do in all the decades I've been going to games, so be prepared for that.

Someone got one in, I saw an octopus on the ice after the game ended.

That guard looks like he'd be easy to run away from. Once you get out in the concourse, just take off.

I remember that. It was during the playoffs I believe in 2008 when we were playing the Pens and a kid threw one in Pittsburgh--completely got away with it.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus's garden in the shade. Awesome, you should totally do it!

I don't know if they're getting stricter with this because of what's going on in FLA with the plastic rats.

The plastic rats are the cause of it. When the rat trick originally happened, the Fla fans would rain thousands of them on the ice, often interrupting play if I recall correctly. They also sold them in the arena. Some may also attribute it to a perceived hatred of all things Detroit held by the poison dwarf.

OR as an idea throw one then the other from opposite sides of the arena very close together in time.

As the first one hits crowd reacts security will look to see what happened(human nature). Throw the second in that moment...Then do as mentioned above jersey switch on concourse or hat added etc or heck simply slide into line at the concession stand...

Hi guys. I threw one during the last verse of the national anthem (right in front of the flyers) and my buddy threw one after the first goal. Will come back with a full summary with pictures and videos as I cannot right due to me currently dying at work. LGRW

Also, I was wearing a white Red Wings, hoodie/jersey and my friend was wearing a red winter classic jersey, any idea who they showed?

Very nicely done!

NBCSN didn't show the octopus(es) as they were thrown in or lying on the ice. I just catched a glimpse of one when one of the girls skated away with it after the first goal. They were showing the goal and then the girl skating away with the pretty squid.

That's national television for you.
