Why did the ref signal hand pass it was in the defensive zone?

I was wondering that too. The pass originated in the defensive zone, but went to the offensive. Wonder what the rule is.

I guess the pass has to be to a player in the D zone. I swear I have seen breakaways started by passes like that before

Rule 79.2:

Defending Zone
- Play will not be stopped for any hand pass by players in their own defending zone. A hand pass in the defending zone is considered to have occurred when both the player making the pass and the player receiving the pass have both of their skates inside their defending zone.

PP is once again looking like something we'd rather decline.
