Free Press: Pavel Datsyuk to return to Russia following Playoffs

This year his production has fallen off but he's still the best forward we have. Last season he was 6th in scoring based on PPG, ahead of Malkin and Ovie. Maybe he woulda cooled off if he played another 19 games, but for the time he was on the ice he was the 6th best offensive producer in the NHL. This year he's fallen to 58th sandwiched inbetween the Sedin twins and Wayne Simmonds. Big number, but he's still our biggest point producer and best two-way player. He's lightyears above anyone except Larkin.

He has still had injury problems. You can try to spin the stats all you like, but the fact of the matter is that he hasn't been a superstar for the last few years. I love Dats, but we need to acknowledge that some teams don't have a superstar. The Wings included.

As if backing into the playoffs and having Joakim Andersson around wasn't depressing enough.

Whatever is left in the Wings season, I am going to spend it enjoying watching the Magic Man. No hard feelings -- he gave everything he could to this organization for the entirety of his career. Ken Holland's dumb cap management is the culprit if he can't move Pav's salary next season.

Larkin needs to move back to center without question going forward. Same with AA.

Pretty surprised to hear the news, seems pretty final. But even when the rumor broke last week, I was OK with it if he did decide to leave the NHL for KHL. His family is still in Russia ... that's gotta be hard. Wonder why his family didn't move to US for his time here, maybe if it is that bad, they can move to US for a year just for Dats to finish out his contract?

Anyhow, if it is true, thanks for the awesome memories, the great interviews, the highlight reels. I don't think his cap hit will hamper us that much. Lot of young kids can be signed for cheap.

Why does everyone think that the Wings are going to be able to trade his contract very easily. There has to be a willing trade partner, and I don't know many teams in a position to do this for us. Heck, if anyone was a GM on one of those teams, wouldn't you look to get something back in exchange for that contract?

The Coyotes have the perfect situation for us. If we trade Pavel's contract for Pronger's, it's a win-win for both teams. It would save Arizona almost 600k. And we can use Pronger's LTIR status, which wouldn't count against the cap. I'm certain that's what Kenny will do.

You realize that Kenny will think that he's getting top pair defenseman....

If allowed, the logic would be to trade him to a team who doesn't want to spend, and can use this contract to get above the cap floor without actually having to pay the contract.

Detroit wins because they unload the cap hit

Team B wins because they get above the cap floor without actually spending an additional 7.5 million.

Can this be done, I dont fully understand the CBA in regards to retirement.

So you think that Franzen's contract that will not count against the cap is a problem. But, Datsyuk's whose would be a 7.5 million cap hit for nothing will hurt us?

If I read the article correctly .. His older daughter who is 13 years old lives in Russia with his first wife.

His baby daughter lives in the U.S with his current wife. He wants to go back for his older daughter who has entered the teenage part of her life. Probably one of the most important times to have a father around.

But yeah a daughter who is 13 moving to the U.S for only a year would be a bad idea.

The man wants to go home and spend time with his daughter with whom he has been away from for a lot of her formative years. Anyone criticizing him for this doesn't understand what is truly important in the long run. I say thanks for your service to the team Pav and I applaud you for making the right decision.

I'm happy for the guy. He's filthy rich, he's got a family, and a country he loves and wants to go back to.

With his kind of money, there's no reason to work, ever again, ever, period.

You only get to live once.

Windsor Star, don't say goodbye to Pavel just yet...

You might want to put away the silly hats and the noisemakers for the time being, and hold off on ordering the cake for the Pavel Datsyuk going away party.

Despite published reports out of Detroit suggesting that Datsyuk would be done as a Detroit Red Wing following the Stanley Cup playoffs, according to someone who should know — Datsyuk’s agent Dan Millstein — his client has not made a final decision at this point.

“Never say never,” Millstein said. “Anything is possible.”

^ I agree JW. As of now, everything I have read. Nothing has been made final. The decision is his and his only but let's not jump overboard just yet.

Plus, with me anyway, there's the Albom factor. He has a history or outright embellishment. I mean maybe Datsyuk is leaving, if Helene St. James wrote it I'd be more certain if you know what I mean.

Yep. Pavs is more than hockey and its obvious that he is putting family first. He coulda walked this year and didn't, he did whatever he could to be a DRW one more year. I have nothing but utmost respect and admiration for that man.

If the players didn't know till know, I hope this makes going rounds that much more important.

Incredibly sad at the same time, this is like losing Nicky IMO.

He's gone. Its the same reason Nicky retired, his teenage son. Kids can be raised by their Mom when they are ankle biters, but they NEED both parents as the grow into adults.

More info from Datsyuk's agent today.

"It's been very difficult for Pavel the last three years to come back (to the U.S.)," Milstein said. "The summers are short. After he gets to Russia there is less than two months.

Originally he wasn't going to (say) anything until after the meeting with Ken and ownership but the rumors started and it became a big distraction. Pavel made the decision that fans and teammates needed to hear it now so they can all continue in the playoffs. He wanted to be truthful and honest with the fans."

On the plus side this pretty much guarantees a full on shift to the young guys. I hope Holland goes hard for a quality scorer (Okposo) as a bridge to the young core and makes Larkin, AA, and Zetterberg our top three centers next season.

Datsyuk was amazing, but its time to see if the next group of guys can take over. I'm optimistic.
