ECQF Game 5 Post-GDT: at Tampa Bay 1, Red Wings 0 (TB Wins, 4-1)

So much of this loss falls on the coaching staff. I would highly doubt Blashill will be fired, but it may start the clock running on his tenure as coach. One would hope that he wil learn from his mistakes this year and grow from them as a coach. Special teams essentially won this series and this is an area where Detroit looked completely lost. I mentioned this in a previous thread, but even their 5 on 3 set up looked like a train wreck. I don't know how a team goes from a top end PP one year to an absolute dumpster fire the next. Again, that has to fall on the coaching staff. Ericsson bothers me every time I see him on the ice, but he is who he is. Is it his fault he's treated like a number 2 defenseman? Again, that falls on the coaching staff. I'm not at the point of dismissal of Blashill, but he needs to be on a short leash and demonstrate he is able to learn from this.

And Nyquist, my God. Shoot the goddamn puck and actually hit the net for once. He needs to be gone, his performance this season has been terrible. Not just stats-wise, but his confidence is completely gone, and he's a totally different player than he was in the first two years. Tatar I'd be okay with keeping, because at least he is a little spitfire and brings something. But Nyquist is just dead weight who scores once in a while.

Nyquist is just afraid of contact. He plays scared. If he had some balls he'd be a pretty consistent scorer.

I know, but watching the two Nyquist just doesn't seem to have that ability to consistently outperform someone like Tatar. They both were disappointments, but Nyquist is just something else and beyond frustrating to watch. He brings down all the lines he's on.

agreed. tatar will hit. he will dive onto the ice to make a play and he is super pumped every goal he scores. he does have some dumb plays but nyquist just seems to be getting worse or not giving a s***. hes frustrated himself you can tell

AA 3rd period ice time: 0:00

See... WHY? Unless he is (or has been) injured, what logic at all, whatsoever, would be the reason to not use him at all? It's really bashing around in my head because I have no clue what they are thinking on this. He's an explosive skater wanting a full-time spot on the roster and has something to prove. Why isn't that player getting ice time?

Here's the thing: A stupid mental error caused us to give up a chance that ended up going in. Meanwhile, we couldn't find the back of the net.

That's how we lost, and that's also our entire season in a nutshell.

71 million dollar payroll and can't score 1 effin goal on a team without 2 of their best players. Pathetic, this is not a TEAM it's a collection of players with brain fart syndrome.

See I see it the complete opposite. I find Tatar is just lost and can't do anything anymore. He doesn't play hungry like he used to, man that guy was a spark plug who loved to shoot and loved to score now I just go game after game without even noticing him except when he turns it over on the pp

Tampa is a bunk team when you look at the roster, problem here is we put a monkey behind the steering wheel. Blashill is the problem.

LOL So, in one season, we've gone from Blashill is a great choice to replace Babcock, to Blashill is the problem. Ok.

Lets not forget, this team struggled last year to get in to the playoffs, just like this year, and they're out in the first round again. There's a lack of quality talent here. We have a bunch of guys. Nobody really stands out, especially after Pav leaves, and Z goes. There's no standouts aside from Larkin, he's shown potential. Tatar and Nyquist did, but that spark has died out quite a bit it seems. Mantha has potential, and hasn't had an opportunity. Outside of that, there's nothing that stands out. But that's what happens in a salary cap world when you're always drafting late.

Blashill needs more time before we start pointing the blame there. The roster is the biggest problem here.

Yeah, the coaching staff definitely shoulders a good bit of blame. This season wasn't a complete failure for Blashill... but it was far from a success. He needs to do a lot better next season with two new assistant coaches.

One of Nyquist or Tatar should be gone by next year. This team does not need either of those two soft bums, let alone both. Trade them while you can still get decent return, after next season they'll be exposed to all, if they haven't been already.

Blashill was a complete disappointment in his first year coaching. How does someone watch game after game at ice-level, and still give Tatar Nyquist & Richards that much time while AA cools his heels on the bench? Unbelievable misuse of young talent; totally not as advertised.

Ken Holland needs to do some serious soul-searching, realize that doing the same thing for the past 8 years has wasted great careers and driven us to complete mediocrity. If he is as incapable of adaptation as he has proven to be, we need to find someone who is worthy of the seat. Its made all the worse by watching Yzerman and Nill head for greener pastures while Kenny squats in the Wings GM chair and rests on his laurels.

Their PP was so bad, from the outside looking in, it didn't look like they practiced it at all. Stagnant telegraphed passes, players without the puck standing still, just down right boring. Datsyuk wouldn't have had to worry about hitting the post if he would have one timed it.

if no changes and datsyuk leaves this team will be just like toronto next season.

Not next season, but in a couple years maybe. Can't believe i'm even saying that, but Toronto is at least making moves to try to improve right now.

Putting two players on the point would be nice for starters. And learning to shoot the puck quicker instead of stopping it and letting the defenders get in positions to block shots.

This team struggled all season to score goals. They didn't score more than two in any game this series. They didn't even score one goal in a must win game. Gosh....I wonder what the problem is. We don't have a defensemen that can score (outside of Green) so please, for the love of God can we all get on the same sheet of music?
