ECQF Game 5 Post-GDT: at Tampa Bay 1, Red Wings 0 (TB Wins, 4-1)

Right now I'd have to say there won't be a 26th year in a row. We need to go with one goalie and cut bait with the other. It's gonna hurt the bottom line to let Jimmy go but he's the obvious choice. I'd say right now to tread water we need at LEAST two top four defensemen. A top line center is imperative. If it's still just Hank, Glendening. AA, and 6-8 minutes of Sheahan we're doomed offensively. We need a top six scoring winger to balance Larkin as well. I'd be willing to trade either or Nyquist or Tatar to get help.

The contending teams are not playing as many kids as we are. They're great and all and very economic but at some point with a solid core of them you MUST mature the roster with leaders and guys who have won the wars and produce at playoff time and win their faceoffs and beat guys to loose pucks and yes, score powerplay goals.

I'm ready for change and I'm ready for Mr. Holland to now live up to the company standard, of those much is given, much is expected.

Mediocrity is the company standard now. What makes you think the Ilitch family is unhappy with Holland and these playoff performances? I haven't heard a peep out of them the last few years. Not like this is a trend. Early playoff exits are now a pattern.

Well that was a damp squib. Same problem as all year. And for the last few years. This team has had lots of skilled smart players but no goalscorers. Franzen has been a massive loss, despite the endless flack he used to get from the stupid, because for all his floaty streakyness, he ALWAYS put up points, was a consistent goal threat (if not a consistent scorer) and could both snipe from the outside or score in close. We have to pin our hopes on Mantha being that player going forward.

Like last year, the wings deserved to win this series, being the better team in more games than not, but just couldn't solve Bishop (who was at his huge best tonight).

Sad to see Pasha go like this, but like Z and K, he's not the player he was (despite still being one of our better guys).

While I don't see a tank coming, I do think this is a seminal moment. Unless KH can somehow rustle up Stamkos or a Lucic in FA, I think its much more re-build and youth movement in earnest. While D, Z and K were at the level they showed last year and at times this year, it was always worth going for it, and hoping a hot goalie or a Franzen like emergence could get us deep into the playoffs. With Franzen done, Dats going and Hank and Kronner having clearly dropped off to support player level, the game changes for the wings. Unless they trade D's contract and hit a HR in FA.

Oulette, AA, Larkin, Marchy and Mrazek will all be fixtures next year. I expect Mantha to be so soon enough, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Sproul and Pulky (who despite his flaws should have seen a lot more games this year, because the guy can score, and if he can learn to adapt to the NHL, he could be important going forward).

Maybe not everyone's choice, but I hope Helm is willing to come back at a reasonable salary. We all know his limitations, but if a more in earnest youth movement can change the balance of the roster a little, he will remain a useful (and highly tradeable) piece

Watching the Blues/Hawks game...Wings are so painfully away from either of these 2 teams.

and StL kcking a** coming back a 2 goal deficit and taking it to OT

Remember the two shots that hit the post ?

Remember when the puck hit Bishop square in the collarbone?

Would love it if we could somehow bring in stammer and backes up front while using Tatar + to bring in vatanen.

Larkin- stamkos- Nyquist

AA- backes- mantha

Zetts- sheahan- pulk

Jurco- glendening- Abby

Also get rid of E and Howard somehow some way.

DK- vatanen

Smith- green

Kronwall- marchy

XO/Jensen/ sproul

Ya bishop was unbelievable

Big free agent signing are a pipe dream

Let's nurture Larkin cause the kid is the real deal... You can tell by the way he picks up his game in clutch moments

Larkin and Mrazek are our two elite potential players with a lot of promising young men as well but I think we can bank on these two

Just saw the GWG, sorry, SWG. So many things went wrong. A fan of the puck by a usually solid puck handling goalie, but mostly lazy play by Kronwall and Ericsson. Ericsson just looked at the puck and acted with no sense of urgency and Kronwall was late covering his man, and still no sense of urgency. E should've hit the guy, held him up a bit, Kronwall could've crosschecked the guy to the ice, held him, something. Puck dribbled over the line anyhow, a bit more disruption and maybe he gets even less on it.

That series winning, err, losing goal epitomizes the year those two had and where their careers have gone. Pathetic.

PK last night was good had they played like that in game 4 we would be talking about Saturday's game.

PP OMG felt like we should have declined and said naaah just give us the faceoff in their zone. The dude that runs PP is Blash's boy from GR right? Time to say later bro you aren't a NHL level coach.

I will now be in root against the teams I don't like Pens, Hawks etc and jump on the Islanders bandwagon as I have a soft spot for the underdog.

Like last year, the wings deserved to win this series,

LOL, if you lose a series in 5 games you don't deserve to win anything. Being 'close' to winning a single game is one thing, but if you are 'close' in 5 games and lose 4 of those, you're not close to anything but a few rounds of golf.

One upside to this year in the playoffs is looking at Mrazek's performance. Ignoring the last play that partially lead to a goal, he looked good in his three games and had no drop off games like last year, despite getting less help than he did before. The guy is clearly a real deal playoff goalie. Imagine how good he'd be if he had a real defense in front of him...

Well the Wings really deserved it!!! To be fait you can't at this level fail on 3 breakaways and not getting burn somehow.

Adding to that an anemic powerplay, especially 5-3 none is actualy moving making it too easy for the Tampa bay's defense...

What i sincerely hope this off season is... Firing the PP coach... Firing the Defense coach....

To me blashill is still a big question mark.... i haven't seen a lot of stunning coaching decisions from him.... He should be at some point by his action able to turn a game around.

Anyway have a nice summer guys :D

LOL. Now let's talk about what will actually happen.

Nyquist - Zetterberg - Abdelkader

Tatar - Richards - Larkin

AA - Sheahan - Mantha

Miller - Helm - Glendenning

Kronwall - Ericsson

DeKeyser - Green

Smith - Marchenko

Mrazek

Howard

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the 2016-17 Detroit Red Wings.

sure ignore the play that cost the Wings the series in Pasha's last game. If that happened with Howard in net he would have been verbally crucified by some here. Mrazek needs to stop flying around and become a more positional sound goalie. If he does that he could become a solid starter if not, he'll bounce around backup and starter duties.

What can you say lots of break always but no finish, a PP to forget and a defense which has Danny D. as the only solid defensive player.

I don't care about the lame excuses of who deserved what, there are 2 facts:

1. Tampa played without Stralman and Stamkos

2. Tampa was a 1 line team

and still finished the Wings in 5, imagine how this would have ended if they were healthy. Pasha's face reminded me on Lids after the Wings bow out to the Press :(

Blaming Mrazek is like blaming Stuart for losing in...was it 2010? He played amazing, made one goof, and it shouldn't have mattered because we shouldn't have been in that position to begin with.

Well he should have stopped the gwg, period. Did he play well? Yes he did but so did Howard a lot of times and people still blamed him for giving up the gwg. So fair is fair. But you are right it doesn't even matter in the bigger context of the game because you can't win if you can't score a goal. Wings could have played for hours and wouldn't have been able to put one past Bishop .Real classy gesture how he talked to Pasha, the amount of respect players around the league have for this guy is unreal and so well deserved.
