Columbus may be screwed in general by the expansion draft.

"Four of the seven protected forwards would be Dubinsky, Foligno, Clarkson, and Hartnell. That would then leave only three spots for Brandon Saad, Cam Atkinson, Boone Jenner and Alexander Wennberg (as well as Calvert, Rychel, and Karlsson). Its not much better on defense, as Fedor Tyutin would be taking up one of the three spots. Ryan Murray and Seth Jones are shoo-ins for the other spots, leaving Jack Johnson, David Savard, and Michael Paliotta exposed."

Suddenly that rumoured Hartnell/Tyutin trade last year at the deadline makes a little more sense.

That Clarkson contract strikes again. I love it.

I see deals being made. Last expansion there were a few "don't take this guy and we'll work something out later to help you" type agreements.

Agree. I could see a few trades where the existing team gives up pretty good compensation if the expansion team takes a bad contract.

I do wonder if any of the 3 top draft picks this year will be kept in the juniors to start the season and only play in the NHL long enough to not have to be protected next summer.

If the expansion draft is next summer, they can play and not have to be protected. Hopefully it is, because then Larkin wouldn't have to be protected.. Although Mantha and Athanasaiou would have to be.

Pierre LeBrun ‎@Real_ESPNLeBrun

Should clarify: first- and second-year "pros" exempt from potential expansion draft, not necessarily NHL players. Pro includes AHL

Ahh okay. I thought it was a case of one full year pro makes a player require protection, but it's two.

Gonna be some good names out there available

im almost certain were gonna have expansion announced after the finals ... So who do we protect? so we leave zetterberg unprotected thinking an expansion team won't take him due to his age?id guess not cause he's the captain and an expansion team might take him for his leadership and since his actual salary will be less than the cap hit

Since Larkin would be exempt ....

Zetterberg athanasiou mantha sheahan abdelkader bertuzzi and one of Tatar/nyquist assuming one gets dealt?

Put in bertuzzi since he'd be available to be claimed and I gotta think some top prospects playing in the ahl will be claimed off teams (total bs) and I like bertuzzi's game and think he Can be valuable for the playoffs

As for defense ... Kronwall dekeyser and one of the kids marchenko/ouellet/sproul but they'll likely be replaced by someone we hopefully pick up by trade .... Robbie Russo is safe from being claimed right?

I thought players on their second year pro need protection? He'll have 2 years in the AHL under his belt come next summer.

I could be wrong here but, the way I interpreted that lebrun tweet I posted a few posts or so ago, the way he says "first and second year pros would be exempt" makes it sound like players coming off of year one or two in a pro league at the time of the expansion draft would be exempt from being drafted to an expansion team.

I'm sure we'll get more clarification sometime soon but if that's the case, Russo would be fine. I'm not sure Vegas would draft him anyway.. I guess it depends on how his next season goes.

There´s a nice interview with Mrazek (in czech)

https://www.sport.cz/hokej/nhl/clanek/776340-chtel-jsem-byt-v-moskve-ale-muzu-podepsat-dlouhodoby-kontrakt-vysvetloval-mrazek-absenci-na-ms.html#section-artcl

Some interesting points, very roughly:

on his drop..

I was sick. Get back too early I guess, should rest for a longer time.

on relationship with Howie..

Professional. Journalist still asking on this. We´re not going to sit for a coffee, but still in respect.

on competition affecting the team

I would not say.

Does Howie wish you the luck and success?

You have to ask him directly. But I´d say so. .. Wins are important. (lol)

Howie was nr1 for p-o. Was the situation better when you played some games with Tampa?

I liked that, unfortunately we didn´t get back from 0:2. G4 was the most important, let them score two minutes left in the game.

on Bedard.

He was in good relationship with Howie. Just professional relation with me. I´ve heard about GR assistant, that´s what I would like.

Conract?

Kenny solving coaching staff right now, we will speak later then.

Bridge / long-term?

Would like long-term. Depends on Howie situation.

Post-season plan?

In Alabama with Sara (gf), beach volleyball tournament. Starting with full training on June. Nothing special for World Cup.

WC with rest-of-europe team?

We spoke with Tatar, they could make czechoslovakia team. (ololo)

Anyway, there´re also few word from mr.Spalenka (his agent) saying:

Two variants, depends on finance in DRW obviously. 2yrs bridge or long-term, nothing else, but currently we´re nowhere due to cap space. Petr is comparable with other goalies. Previous contracts were good, we´re on a good point right now in right time. Let´s wait for Wings managing their financial space.

Mrazek seems to be a TINY bit of a blabber mouth. I guess he's a good news source on what goes down. They should ask him what team thinks of Blashill. "We are professional but not friendly"

But in reality if Mraz didn't feel comfortable with Bedard then I think management made right decision. Although I'm not entirely sure if GR coach for NHL level of play is a good replacement.

I guess if they're letting Bedard go when Howie allegedly has a strong relationship with him but Mrazek does not it tells you where the organization is going in terms of the future in net (if it wasn't already clear). But in addition to this being Mrazek's team going forward this might fuel more Howard trade speculation too.

But the AHL is considered pro. Which meas guys like Russo, Mantha, AA (if I'm interpreting the rules correctly) would require protection.

if that is the case, you protect Mantha and AA, leave Nyquist/Tatar unprotected, a team can only lose ONE player anyhow. so its not like they would lose all the players they leave unprotected.

Protect AA, Mantha, Abby, Larkin, Sheahan, and whichever 2 top tier players they sign. If any of those listed can be exempt, then throw the protect on Z.

On D you protect Dekeyeser, top defender they sign or acquire, one of the kids.

Goalie of course Mrazek.

That leave would leave (unless they are traded) Tatar, Nyquist, Pulkkinen, Jurco, Glendening and possibly Z all unprotected up front, Kronwall, Ericsson, Green and a few kids unprotected on D along with McCollum and Coreau at G. Holland will probably sign a BU goalie for Petr, but probably only 1 year deal.

If he isn't traded, Smith will be a UFA after next season so I think he wouldn't need a protection.

This is russo's first year in the ahl though, isn't it? It's Mantha and AAs second pro year. So after next year, Russo would still fall under the "2 year" thing.

Oh sorry I misread. I read it as 2 year pros need protection. If they are safe than that is ace.

To the one who said to leave Goose and Tatar unprotected... hell no. This summer Holland needs to decide who he will protect. Whoever falls outside of said protection, he needs to trade em. Get prospects and picks for guys with value who'd likely be drafted. This team won't be a contender next season, so trade the guys we'd likely lose and then make a run for it the season after. It would be dumb have another mediocre season to only lose guys for nothing the following summer.

IIRC, the time pro will be counted as completed seasons, meaning next summer Russo would be eligible to be taken.

Every team will be looking to do that.
